Michael as a girl's name

[name_f]My[/name_f] friend is due with another girl in about month. We were talking about names and the subject of boys names as girls names.

I generally like boys names as girls names, [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] etc. We got to talking about more unusual boys names as girls names like [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]Michael[/name_u].

[name_u]Michael[/name_u] is considered a pretty boring boy’s name, I’m not a fan but when considered for a girl, I think it gives it new life. I also like the spelling [name_m]Mykel[/name_m] for a girl.

What do you all think of [name_u]Michael[/name_u] as a girl’s name?

I’m not a fan of using boys names for girls. [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] and [name_u]Avery[/name_u] are okay, but I don’t like [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. I would go with [name_f]Makayla[/name_f], if you like the sound of [name_u]Michael[/name_u].

[name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is the feminine form. [name_m]Mykel[/name_m] would lead me to believe the parents were illiterate.

I really dislike [name_u]Michael[/name_u] for a girl. [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] is miles better. Sorry!

I don’t think it works. Let’s look at number of births last year in the US.
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] are both clearly used for more males, but are being used by girls. And [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] has the option of ‘[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]’ as a nickname, which feminizes it.
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] F: 553 babies M: 9,920
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]: F: 185 babies M: 1225

[name_u]Avery[/name_u] has flipped to the girls, but is still being used by both genders:
F: 8272 M: 1996

[name_u]Michael[/name_u], on the other hand, is definitely all boy.
M: 15,596 F: [name_m]ZERO[/name_m]. It hasn’t been given to any girls since 1997.
If you’re into this, I’d suggest [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], or even [name_u]Micah[/name_u] ([name_f]Myka[/name_f])?

This. What about [name_m]Micaiah[/name_m] or [name_u]Michal[/name_u]?

I actually know a woman named [name_u]Michael[/name_u]—though I honestly have no clue how she spells it (she’s just a friend of a friend).

I’m not generally a fan of boys names on girls and [name_u]Michael[/name_u] is no exception, though it’s better than [name_m]George[/name_m] or [name_m]Fred[/name_m] I suppose.

I think you’re more likely to get pronunciation mistakes if you spell it differently than [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. People will probably assume that it’s a girl and that it’s meant to be pronounced like [name_f]Raquel[/name_f] with an M or something like that.

I think [name_u]Michal[/name_u] is a good option with some history. Pronounced sort of like [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] but with a K sound replacing the CH. me-kell or mi-kell

I don’t like [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]/ [name_f]Mckayla[/name_f]/ [name_f]MacKayla[/name_f]. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] either. These names were part of the discussion my friend & I were having.

I should point out that she’s not naming her daughter [name_u]Michael[/name_u], it’s just part of what we were talking about. Her other daughter is [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] so it’d be a bit weird if she had [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] & [name_u]Michael[/name_u].

this, definitely. I knew a Mykell who was female, I couldn’t wrap my head around her name. Then again, my sister’s a [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f], which is technically a variant of [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], which, in turn, is the feminine form of [name_u]Michael[/name_u].

Basically, I’d think that the parents of a female [name_u]Michael[/name_u] were told/convinced they were having a boy, but couldn’t be arsed with choosing a girl’s name when they found out they were expecting a daughter.

I suppose Mika would be a better one?

Definitely not a fan.

I really do not like [name_u]Michael[/name_u] as a girls name.

Definitely not. Too masculine. Sorry.

Definitely not a fan of boys names on girls or girls names on boys.

Nothing wrong with [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]. In fact my best friend’s name is [name_f]Micaela[/name_f] (the only other acceptable spelling of the name imo, please no [name_f]Makayla[/name_f] etc) and I’ve grown rather fond of the name.

There’s also [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], which is dated and all, but anything’s better than [name_u]Michael[/name_u] itself.

No, just NO!

I’m quite fond of [name_u]Michal[/name_u] (mee-khal) on girls, and it’s a traditional name.

I would not respell it.

I definitely do not like [name_m]Mykel[/name_m] for mee-khal and I like it even less for [name_m]MIKE[/name_m]-ahl ([name_u]Michael[/name_u]). Throwing y’s into random places almost always looks crappy. [name_u]Michael[/name_u] for a girl is not my taste but if I wanted to use it I would just spell it [name_u]Michael[/name_u], I think trying to “cute up” the spelling makes it look apologetic like “I know this is weird and kind of uggo but, here, I tried, I stuck a y in it!”

If one must use a boy’s name for a girl just use it. Never apologize.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it on a girl its on my list. I know of a woman named [name_u]Michael[/name_u].

I’ve known of a couple female Michaels. I think that’s a much better option than respelling it.

I had a sorority sister who’s name was Mikail. Pronounced Mic(as in mickey)-kale.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Mika[/name_u], Mikail, Mikaelle, [name_m]Mikael[/name_m]?
