We’ve chosen the name Micòl for our baby girl who is due later in the [name]Spring[/name]. It is an unusual Old Testament name which is mainly used in [name]Italy[/name] (where my partner is from), with the most famous Micòl appearing in a beautiful italian novel called ‘The Garden of the Finzi-Continis’.
We really love this name, but the British friends and family that we have told so far think that it is too masculine, and that it would get confused with the boy’s name [name]Michael[/name].
What do you think? To me the name sounds feminine and graceful, but perhaps that is because I met it through the novel?
BTW I’m hoping that the accent on the O will help with pronunciation - it is the second syllable that is stressed, not the first (so unlike [name]Michael[/name] in that respect!).
I think it totally works for a girl. It rhymes with [name]Nicole[/name]! [name]How[/name] can that not be feminine? I guess its similarity to [name]Nicolai[/name], [name]Cole[/name], and variants of [name]Michael[/name] may put a slightly masculine spin on it. Regardless, I think it works for both genders but leans slightly feminine in my mind. I assume this is a variant of [name]Michal[/name], the name of [name]King[/name] [name]Saul[/name]'s daughter, which in that spelling looks so much like [name]Michael[/name] that it would often be confused for it. Anyway, I love your choice of Micol. Your family and friends will get used to it…especially when they see your beautiful baby. The nickname [name]Mika[/name] (MEE-kuh) would be really spunky and cute, if you are nickname people.
It is lovely, but in an English speaking country you can’t use diacritical marks in names, so it will just be Micol. Could you add an E to make things easier for her? Micole?

Cool, that is how I would have pronounced it. I think it is fine and sounds feminine. Like you said, it is somewhat similar to [name]Nicole[/name]. I didn’t associate it with [name]Michael[/name] at all.

Alzora, yes I believe it is a variant of [name]Michal[/name] (see File:Michal Gustave Doré.jpg - Wikipedia) [name]Blade[/name], wow I didn’t know that you officially can’t use diacritics in the UK! Micole is a good idea, although I do think that I prefer the shorter Micol (it attracts me in the same way as the French [name]Manon[/name] does, somehow). Perhaps we could put Micol on the birth certificate and passport, but informally use Micòl in everyday life… Anyway I don;t feel too strongly about the accent. I’m really pleased that some other people like this name!
