Middle name Emerald: terrific or trashy!?

My husband surprised me by saying he really likes [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Emerald[/name]. I’m shocked, since he likes very classic, traditional names. But he agreed the stately [name]Elizabeth[/name] can handle a more poetic middle, and this is what he likes.

I’d love your opinions. Does [name]Emerald[/name] have deep-green, fey, whimsical, jewel-toned magic? Or is it as un-lustrous as [name]Diamond[/name] and [name]Crystal[/name]?

I want to enhance [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s regal beauty with a touch of whimsical charm, not destroy it with trashiness.

Does [name]Emerald[/name] work?

[name]TIA[/name]!

I used to really love [name]Emerald[/name] as a first name…but then a former boyfriend said it sounded trashy. I still like it though.
Personally I think as a middle name it works well with [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Emerald[/name]. It also combines both your husbands taste in names with your taste, since you like more adventurous names!

Well, as i might have mentioned, i love [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Emerald[/name]!

Despite the fact that they are all gem stones, [name]Emerald[/name] is no where even close to the Crystals and Diamonds. And a gem name like [name]Ruby[/name] has a different feel again. Or [name]Jade[/name]. Or [name]Pearl[/name]. I could go on…

[name]Just[/name] as flower names like genteel [name]Rose[/name] and kooky [name]Orchid[/name] have different feels, not all gem stone names were created equal. Maybe its because i don’t know anyone called [name]Emerald[/name], i actually picture the beautiful green, slightly exotic stone rather than a person or just a name. Maybe its because an [name]Emerald[/name] is a slightly classier and less obvious stone? I’m not sure. But i know you love it, and you have really good taste, trust yourself!

This is so creepy. I was JUST thinking of Emerald last night for a middle name and was trying to talk my husband into it. Why does it seem like you and I are always on the same wavelength?! Last night I was trying to talk my husband into Shyla Emerald, but then woke up today thinking of Essie Emerald instead. I agree with your first description of the name: it is magical. It is a combination of both playful and classy–classy because it is a valued gem and the signature color of whimsical Ireland, playful because it conjures up images of leprechauns and Oz. I adore it. If I didn’t have so many people I want to honor with middle names, I would very likely use Emerald in the middle for something. I think it is a perfect choice for your Elizabeth/Betty. Little Betty Em!

I think [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Emerald[/name] works very nicely. I agree it’s different in feel from [name]Crystal[/name] and [name]Diamond[/name], and it’s in the middle spot anyway. Nice option!

I will be honest. I love [name]Emerald[/name] and suggested it up to a few friends to see what they thought and a few did say trailer trash. I don’t get that impression so I was surpised to see this post…I really like it and it nn’s to [name]Emme[/name].

I think [name]Emerald[/name] is a splendid middle name, especially with [name]Elizabeth[/name]. Very nice flow overall.

I like [name]Emerald[/name] as a middle name. Another option is Esmerie the French version.

[name]Freya[/name], you make an excellent point! Gems are like flowers. They have all different flavors!

Alzora - [name]Ike[/name] & [name]Mike[/name], they think alike! And yes, there is something whimsical about an emerald! I, too, think of [name]Ireland[/name] and [name]Oz[/name], and lost cities in deep rainforests. Also, I see [name]Elizabeth[/name] as a coppery name, the white skin and russet hair of Good [name]Queen[/name] [name]Bess[/name], and the titian hair of [name]Elizabeth[/name] Siddal, the pre-Raphaelite model who posed for all of Rosetti’s paintings and [name]Millais[/name]'s [name]Ophelia[/name]. The deep bordeauxs and crimsons of Elizabethan tapestries. When you add emerald to that, it’s this rich collision of color.

[name]Emerald[/name] is the Pantone color of the year for 2013, and the words they use to describe it are perfect: lush, vivid, radiant, elegant, lively, sophisticated, verdant, prosperous, luminous, healing.

Oh, and I, too, thought of [name]Betty[/name] [name]Em[/name]! So sweet.

Justadeltagirl - never heard of Esmerie. [name]Emeraude[/name] is the French word for emerald. Where does Esmerie come from? I think I’d rather use the word, but this is an intriguing name! The author of Twilight should have consulted you before she bottomed out with [name]Renesmee[/name]. Thanks for sharing. Are you in Mississippi, by chance?

Thanks, everyone, for your opinions!

I adore it, omg, please do it!

[name]Love[/name] it! Classic yet whimsical.

I’m not even pregnant yet, you guys, but once I totally decide it’ll be set in stone. Boy’s name has been set for some time. And I’m seriously really close to cementing it.

I was kind of feeling guilty because I was supposed to include a [name]Mar[/name]- name somewhere. There are all these [name]Mar[/name]- names throughout my family - mom, grandma, great grandma, dad, aunt, [name]MIL[/name] - just by chance, and my mom and I share the same first name we don’t go by ([name]Marla[/name]). I felt like I had to have [name]Mar[/name]- something in there. But I just flat out don’t like [name]Mar[/name] names. I’ve look at every [name]Mar[/name] name in the world. I don’t like 'em.

Then added guilt: [name]Elizabeth[/name] is my [name]MIL[/name]'s mn. She’s [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] but goes by [name]Sue[/name]. So then I felt even worse not having a nod to my family.

But [name]Emerald[/name] kind of almost has a [name]Mar[/name]- sound in there. And then there’s the fact that green is far and away, forever, my mom’s favorite color, emeralds are her favorite stone AND her birth stone. So I’m starting to feel better about it.

No one ever pressured me to use a [name]Mar[/name]- name. It was totally pressure I put on myself. Everyone would encourage me to use whatever I want. I like the subtle reference to my mother, and it might mean more to her than just tacking on some name out of duty that we don’t even particularly like.

Thanks for all the feedback, y’all! God willing, there will one day be a little [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Emerald[/name].

I know a woman named [name]Emerald[/name]. She’s kind of snobbish, like she thinks she’s better than everyone else. Needless to say, I have a bad connotation with the name, now. That being said, I actually think it’s a pretty name and could definitely work. And I like the combo of [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Emerald[/name], too. I’d say it’s a great name to use.

Yes, green, magical, whimsical, [name]Ireland[/name] and [name]Oz[/name]. For sure.
