Middle name for Clyde

We have pretty much cemented [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] as a first name for our second son due the first week of [name_u]February[/name_u].

Now we are struggling to find a middle name we love with it.

We had talked about [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], but aren’t sure if flows super well. I think [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] sounds nice with [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] and with our last name, it just might be a lot to spit out, considering I say “Warren Patrick!” to my toddler approximately 500 times a day.

One of the common critiques we’ve gotten for the name [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] is that it reminds people of Clydesdale horses. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband’s grandfather (whom he lived with part of his childhood and is close to) is named [name_u]Dale[/name_u]. I JOKINGLY said, “We could use [name_u]Dale[/name_u] as a middle name and then we’d really have a Clydesdale.”.

Now my husband wants to name our child [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Dale[/name_u]. :woman_facepalming: He likes that it would honor his grandpa, but I think that would look like we were trying to make a joke of our child’s name. His grandpa’s first name is actually [name_u]Robert[/name_u] and he goes by his middle name [name_u]Dale[/name_u], but we can’t use the name [name_u]Robert[/name_u] for various reasons.

[name_f]My[/name_f] dad’s middle name is [name_u]Ray[/name_u], and I think [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Raymond[/name_m] doesn’t sound terrible? As a nod to him. We don’t love [name_u]Ray[/name_u] or [name_m]Raymond[/name_m] though.

Help! What middle would you suggest to go with the first name [name_u]Clyde[/name_u]?

Here is a very long list of randoms that were jotted in my notes while up in the middle of the night with a fussy toddler. I haven’t had a chance to cull through them yet, so they might be horrendous and only written in a sleep-deprived state.:joy:

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Anderson[/name_u] (Anderson is my mother-in-law’s maiden name, but it is also my brother-in-law’s middle name, so I feel like he gets dibs on [name_u]Anderson[/name_u] and has mentioned wanting to use it some day).

I think [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is a nice combo that flows pretty well. [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Dale[/name_u], however, doesn’t to me. I think it’s mostly the names running together because of the D sounds, as well as them both being one syllable.

Your list is full of really good picks so to narrow it down, my favorites would probably be [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m], [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], and [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] (I’ve seen [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] used for its biblical associations as well if that interests you).

In most cases it seems like a two-syllable middle works best for flow if you believe you’ll end up saying both names pretty often!

some suggestions

(apologies if I repeat any from your list, sometimes I overlook them by accident!)

[name_m]Warren[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] and…

Would [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] be an option? It’s easier to say than [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] 500 times a day.

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is very handsome and solid; I think it could work and flows well - rolls off the tongue!

Of your options, these are the ones I like:

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] → solid, handsome and flows well

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Murray[/name_u] → a nod to your dad

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Gideon[/name_u] → handsome but snappy!

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] → rolls off the tongue and gives me the same vibe as ‘Warren Patrick’!

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] → same as above - flows well and sounds good

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Owen[/name_u] → I like the sounds together, gives me the same feel as [name_m]Warren[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] and I could imagine you saying it out loud

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]David[/name_u] → same as above

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Henry[/name_u] → same as above

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] work too

I like Clyde Theodore alot! It’s a great choice. You also have some other great options…

And personally Clyde Dale isn’t terrible, I think it’s a nice way to honor a family member. However, I do think it might be a bit horse-y…

What about…
Clyde Daniel
Clyde Royce
Clyde Randall (my favorite!)

I really liked [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]! Great match with [name_m]Warren[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], and the currently-fashionable yet quite classic [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] balances [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] nicely.

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Dale[/name_u] would not be my pick; I was a horse girl (never owned one, just read alllll the books), so I wouldn’t be able to say it without thinking Clydesdale, though it certainly isn’t a bad association. I also don’t love how the D’s run together.

I like a pp’s suggestion of shortening to [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Theo[/name_u] if [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] just feels too much of a mouthful!

I like [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and I think it’s fine for regular use. It has four syllables like [name_m]Warren[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] but with different emphasis. I think it’s a matter of getting use to a new rhythm.

From your other ideas, I really love [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Russell[/name_m] for you. It fits the vibe and it flows off the tongue easily. [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]David[/name_u] is another great combination. [name_u]David[/name_u] and [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] are the same traditional style. I blend the back to back d’s together into one sound so it works for me but you might not find it as smooth.

I would only mention that your maiden name remains a favourite middle name choice for me. It wouldn’t achieve the ease of flow you’re after but something like [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Antony[/name_m] (this spelling in particular) could get you both connection and flow.

[name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m]

I’m sold on [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] he’s so handsome, strong and has a cuddly wintry/autumnal vibe which I like. This name feels like an oversized cuddly jumper feeling all cosy whilst sitting by the log burner! He’s so cosy :teddy_bear:

I actually think [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] has a great sound and very cohesive brother name for W@rren P@trick! I also think [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] has a very rhythmic sound which would work just fine saying 500 times a day (as someone with the toddler I know the feeling :joy::joy:) honestly fab choice.

I think [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Dale[/name_u] is too horsey as a horse lover I couldn’t not think of that association immediately. Could you have two middle names maybe [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]Dale[/name_u]? You don’t have to use the second middle name all the time when calling his name I don’t with [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] I just call her [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Ella[/name_f]!

You have so many fab ideas but I’m a sucker for [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]!

I like [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] though I’m also keen on [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Calloway[/name_u] and [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Stanley[/name_u]. [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] is a nice complement to [name_m]Warren[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], with the [name_u]Southern[/name_u] first + more traditional/classic/cross-cultural middle.

Another idea is [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Anders[/name_m]. Nice nod to your MIL without taking [name_u]Anderson[/name_u]. I would also just ask about [name_u]Anderson[/name_u] though, it has a lovely rhythm after [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] - we have seven people in my extended family with the same middle name as a nod to the same person - I don’t think honour names can or should be limited/claimed. [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] [name_m]Raymond[/name_m] isn’t quite as appealing to me but I always think an honour name should trump “perfect flow” if it’s someone you’d like to make that tribute to. See pout just made re honouring but I generally wouldn’t go for [name_u]Dale[/name_u] - I wouldn’t use a D name after [name_u]Clyde[/name_u] anyway (D bumping into D) and this seems like setting the kid up for teasing/ annoying comments.

[name_u]Murray[/name_u] has been pitched as a middle name because it’s my grandpa’s middle name- I can’t believe I never made the [name_u]Ray[/name_u] connection at the end of it, too!
