I’m expecting a girl in [name_f]April[/name_f] and while I’m pretty sure we’re going with [name_f]Emily[/name_f], I’m stumped for a middle name. Our other two are [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Bianca[/name_f] [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] and each middle name is a nod to our dads, the kids’ grandfathers. So with our third (and last) I wanted to somehow honor both our moms. The problem is their names are [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Caridad[/name_f] (nickname [name_u]Cary[/name_u]) and [name_f]Marta[/name_f]. [name_f]Maria[/name_f] and [name_f]Marta[/name_f] are so similar that they’re hard to combine. [name_f]Martia[/name_f] sounds weird and made-up. I also thought [name_u]Marty[/name_u] (combining [name_f]Marta[/name_f] with [name_u]Cary[/name_u]) but I’m pretty sure my husband won’t go for that. My friend suggested just removing the problem letter and using [name_f]Mara[/name_f], but I don’t love that name. I thought about birth months but they’re [name_u]March[/name_u] and [name_u]July[/name_u]. The only commonality I’ve found is that the [name_u]July[/name_u] birthstone is ruby and one of the pisces stones is also ruby. So … [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]? I don’t know. Help!
What about using just any other [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- names?
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marina[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Marion[/name_u]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marcelina[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
I know it’s not overally similar but [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marcia[/name_f]?
[name_m]How[/name_m] about just using the first syllable of both - [name_f]Mar[/name_f]?
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Martelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mariam[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marcelle[/name_f]
Or, go with a virtue type name that personifies both of your mothers?
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u] (I really like this!)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] Amora
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] __________ whatever word fits the bill.
One I thought of was [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Carita[/name_f] (combining the “Car” from [name_f]Caridad[/name_f] and the “ta” from [name_f]Marta[/name_f]).
Tbh I think [name_f]Martia[/name_f] sounds nice and not made up at all.
Really though I like the suggestion of [name_f]Carita[/name_f]. It has a beautiful meaning, sounds nice with [name_f]Emily[/name_f], and combines the names of both grandmas well! [name_f]Cara[/name_f] could work too
Any [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- name will work also since they share that in common.
And there is always the option to hyphenate like [name_f]Carys[/name_f]-[name_f]Marta[/name_f] or [name_f]Marta[/name_f]-[name_f]Marie[/name_f] or something like that?
I love [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mara[/name_f]. So pretty, and seems like the most straightforward solution.
Otherwise, I like [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Martina[/name_f]. It has all the letters of [name_f]Maria[/name_f], and all the letters of [name_f]Marta[/name_f], and the -ina ending gives it a sound all its own.
The obvious one to me would be [name_f]Mary[/name_f] to combine [name_u]Cary[/name_u] and [name_f]Marta[/name_f]
I do think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mara[/name_f] is the other most obvious honour name.
The only other one that I think wouldn’t be stretching it too far would be [name_f]Margarita[/name_f]
X
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] is gorgeous, as is [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marcelina[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] works well, a mix or [name_u]CARy[/name_u] and [name_f]MartA[/name_f], it might be a bit of stretch though.
Or you could do two middle names? I know it doesn’t fit with your other children’s names but it could be the best way to honour both so you could do [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Marta[/name_f]? Or [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marta[/name_f] [name_u]Cary[/name_u]?
Or a real push if you don’t mind a unisex kind of name you could do [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Carter[/name_u]? [name_u]CARy[/name_u] + [name_f]MarTA[/name_f] = [name_u]Carter[/name_u].

More “[name_f]MAR[/name_f]” names – [name_f]Marsha[/name_f], [name_f]Marla[/name_f] (I personally love the sound of this name), [name_f]Mariana[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], [name_f]Mariah[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f], [name_f]Maris[/name_f], [name_u]Merritt[/name_u], [name_f]Merry[/name_f], [name_f]Merryn[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_f]Marissa[/name_f], [name_f]Marlena[/name_f]/[name_f]Marlene[/name_f], [name_f]Marine[/name_f], [name_u]Marley[/name_u] – I like that this combines [name_f]MAR[/name_f] and [name_u]CARY[/name_u]!, [name_f]Samara[/name_f]
I love the suggestion of [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Marian[/name_u] or [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_u]Marion[/name_u]. Other possibilities;
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Maura[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mariel[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] Marilena
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marisol[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] might work? It’s got the M- start and -a end, and sort of sounds like both of the names. I know that you said you don’t like [name_f]Mara[/name_f], but what about [name_f]Amara[/name_f] or [name_f]Tamara[/name_f]? Although less similar, they both still have the roots of the honor names in there. [name_f]Martia[/name_f] seems like the best way to go in terms of pure combinations, but it seems like you’re on the fence. Otherwise [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Maren[/name_f], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], or [name_f]Martina[/name_f] have my vote due to the similar [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- beginnings.
Also, have you considered the name meanings? [name_f]Maria[/name_f] means “bitter” or “wished for child” (let’s go with the latter, haha), while [name_f]Marta[/name_f] means “lady” or “daughter” in some contexts. Maybe there is a name out there that combines the meanings? Maraia means “a daughter that was wished for” if you still want to go with similar-sounding names, but there are several other options as well- [name_f]Myra[/name_f], [name_f]Asha[/name_f], and [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] all mean some variation of “wish” in regards to a daughter.
My favorites out of all this are probably…
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Amara[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Myra[/name_f]
I instantly thought of [name_f]Martina[/name_f] and [name_f]Marietta[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Emily[/name_f]! I think any [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- name would work. Have you considered their middle names as well?
While I adore the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], I don’t think it is particularly a strong connection to either woman, and if it was me, I wouldn’t feel like the name honoured me - to be perfectly honest.
Would you consider giving your daughter two middle names? [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marta[/name_f] [name_f]Caridad[/name_f] or [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Caridad[/name_f] [name_f]Marta[/name_f]? We did that with my daughter and both grandmas were pleased and my daughter likes carrying both their names
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]*
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Marta[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] (but maybe not enough of [name_f]Maria[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Martina[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (easiest option!)
*Care’iss/Carris
[name_f]Mar[/name_f] is a name on it’s own (it means sea) and is the common denominator of the two names. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Mar[/name_f] has a nice flow with the 3 syllable first and one syllable middle.
