Middle name for Samuel

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there! I would like some help deciding a middle name if our first baby boy. We’re going for [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] as it was my grandfather name (and also a typo for a Portuguese and [name_f]English[/name_f] name, since my family is Portuguese but I married into a [name_f]British[/name_f] family).

Originally I wanted [name_u]John[/name_u] for middle name, as a memoir to his family, since his dad is called [name_u]John[/name_u], my husband has middle is [name_u]John[/name_u] and overall [name_u]John[/name_u] has been a name on that side. But my husband states that he wants [name_u]John[/name_u] to be a first name for a possible second boy.

And now I’m a bit stuck on what middle name would go well with [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] (considering [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or [name_u]Sammy[/name_u] as nicknames).

I was thinking either:

  • [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Dean[/name_u] (honor to his best mate)
  • [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (honor to his brother)
  • [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]David[/name_u] (his father middle name).

…since I feel these names have a ring to it.

Could you guys give me some advise?

Thank you all!

I think all middles go well with [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], so you definitely can’t go wrong with any of them!

If your husband wants [name_u]John[/name_u] as a first name for a second boy, and [name_u]John[/name_u] is also an honour for his family, I would consider [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. That way you could honour his family with possible baby boy #2 and honour his best mate with this baby.

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] & [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Dean[/name_u] flow exceptionally well in my opinion, so I would personally choose one of them if we were only talking about personal taste / style.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps in some way!

All your middles sound good!

I guess it might be worth considering:

  • who is most important for your husband to honour?
  • which of those people most have the values you’d want your kid to share?
  • are you happy to have two honour names or would you want one your just like?

Seeing [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]Dean[/name_u] in the list made me think of [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. Potentially either one could tangentially be an honour for the other, for that reason!

[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]David[/name_u] reads very Biblical to me (Samuel and [name_u]David[/name_u] appear together in the Bible) so that could be a plus or minus for you.

Personally I think I’d go for [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Dean[/name_u], just because [name_u]Dean[/name_u] is a bit more unexpected as a middle name and it does sound great with [name_m]Samuel[/name_m].

I know that [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] is a biblical name so I personally think you should give your child a middle name that is also biblical.
[name_f]My[/name_f] suggestions are, if you want a J middle name,
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m]
[name_u]Joseph[/name_u]
[name_m]Josiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m]
[name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

I [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Dean[/name_u], it reminds me a lot of the show Supernatural (there were brothers named [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] “Sam” and Dean) but as an avid Supernatural fan, I don’t think its a problem. but it is something to consider

[name_f]My[/name_f] vote is for [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]David[/name_u]!
