Middle Name Help for Caspian

My husband and I are not yet pregnant, but in each of our families we’re the first child to get married, and we have been talking about bonny wee kiddos and their names for months now. Hubby dearest finds it really difficult to come up with names that he likes, but he’s VERY good at telling me which of my suggestions he doesn’t like, and why.

So after several months of “what do you think of…” and “what about…” and “are you SURE you don’t like…” something amazing has happened. I suggested [name]Caspian[/name], one of my most favorite of names…and Hubby says, “Huh. I like it!”

Commence the Hallelujah Chorus.

So now I am on the hunt for a sufficiently awesome middle name for our future [name]Caspian[/name]. I’ve had a very hard time with this because I want something unique and meaningful, but not so much so that my in-laws will be completely horrified. Which is TOUGH when your tastes run straight to the fantastical.

I need your help!

The parameters:

    • Our last name is hyphenated. A two-syallable K***** and a one syllable Str**. As you can see, this limits us from using names that end with a K sound or have to much STR in them…or a combination of the two like the darling Kestrel. Sad.
    • I’d like to avoid middle names that start with a K or a hard C because then it’s just way too much alliteration.
    • I tend to go for names that end in -ian, -on, -en…they sound so strong to me. But I can’t do two in a row. As much as I love [name]Sebastian[/name], it doesn’t work after [name]Caspian[/name]. Help me think outside my -n box?
    • I have very eclectic, non-traditional taste. Names like [name]James[/name] and [name]Charles[/name] and [name]John[/name] are great for people with very traditional taste who have a fear of ever being different. But that is the opposite of who I am, who my husband is, and how we will raise our family…so that is the opposite of what I want.

The pre-dispositions:

    • I love nature/word names, such as [name]Wolf[/name], [name]Falcon[/name], [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Talon[/name], [name]Sage[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Hawthorn[/name]/e, Bracken, [name]Peregrine[/name] ([name]Pippin[/name]), [name]Atlas[/name], or [name]Cedar[/name]. Many of these will not work for reasons listed above, although [name]Sage[/name] is one I’m considering.
    • I also love literary names, whether Biblical, historical, or fantasy (clearly). [name]Sebastian[/name], Atreyu, [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Dorian[/name], [name]Constantine[/name], [name]Merlin[/name], [name]Nicodemus[/name], [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Damian[/name], [name]Noah[/name], [name]Elijah[/name], [name]Oberon[/name], and [name]Lucian[/name] have all been on my favorites list at one point or another…but most of them do not lend themselves well to middle names. [name]Noah[/name] was a contender till I mentioned it to Hubby, who wisely informed me that’s “too many boats.” lol

I have put a lot of thought and research into this, obsessive name nerd that I am, but I am utterly stumped for a creative, meaningful middle name. So I submit my problem into your hands, dear Berries. Go nuts!

Hmmm…I like [name]Felix[/name]! Too common? Have you been deep into the posts at Nook of Names yet? You might really like some of her posts on nature and literary names. She definitely finds striking, unique names from the past.

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Archer[/name]? [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Alaric[/name]? [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Orlando[/name]?

@sweetchariot - I haven’t gone through the site much, but I am currently wading through the book (gotta love the library!). I’m on the E names now  [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Felix[/name] is a nice combo…not sure how I feel with the -x ending right before the K…is it too much “ksk” in the throat?

@sugarfoot - I love your list! So many unique names, go you! For me personally, I like [name]Archer[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Feivel[/name] (so interesting!), [name]Frost[/name], [name]Lincoln[/name], [name]Malachi[/name], [name]North[/name], [name]Onyx[/name], [name]Roman[/name], and [name]Silas[/name]. You are right, we have similar taste

@lori johnson - [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] is one I have such mixed feelings about. It flows beautifully, and I’m a complete sucker for Arthurian legend…but growing up in the decade that I did, that little cartoon about the aardvark was huge. I can’t shake the association, and it’s like going from the sublime to the ridiculous. :frowning:

@cristinamariane - I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Alaric[/name]. The name [name]Alaric[/name] is unique, meaningful (noble ruler), regal, and versatile. My only problem is that it ends with that hard C…do you think that’s too much up against the K of our last name?

Thank you all so much for your suggestions!! [name]Feel[/name] free to keep them coming!

I try:

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Jadiel[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Zion[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Soren[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Aiden[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Forest[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Ulysses[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Hermes[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Solal
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Alec[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Lancelot[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Galaad
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Emrys[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Fable[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Tristan[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Hector[/name]

Loving the suggestion of [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Arthur[/name].

I love [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Emrys[/name]!!!

If the K is the same as the one in [name]Alaric[/name], probably not, but if it’s like [name]Knox[/name], then for sure. [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] is a regal choice as well.

Edited for privacy.

@flokoflo - Your ideas are right up my alley! I love so many of these names, particularly [name]Zion[/name] (on my short list for a first name), [name]Soren[/name], [name]Fable[/name] (on my short list), and [name]Tristan[/name]. [name]Jadiel[/name] is very unique, I’ve never heard that before and I do love the -iel ending. [name]Aiden[/name] I like, but it is very trendy in my area for girls and boys.

@maggiemary - I’m still pondering this one…I will have to ask Hubby what he thinks.

@dedutchess - I have mixed feelings about [name]Emrys[/name]. It’s unique and almost elvish looking…but is it too feminine? It has all of my favorite elements for a girl’s name…I don’t know how I feel about bestowing it on a boy.

@cristinamaria - It is a hard K sound… :frowning: So so sad, because [name]Alaric[/name] goes PERFECTLY with [name]Caspian[/name].

@saracita00 - I [name]LOVE[/name] the names you gave your sons!! [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Peregrine[/name], and Zephan is a fantastic sibset. And [name]Zephaniah[/name] is an interesting choice that I hadn’t even thought of! I’m not so keen on [name]Rhett[/name] or [name]Everett[/name], but from your list I like [name]Archer[/name], [name]Ragnar[/name], [name]Ozias[/name], and [name]Sterling[/name] the best. [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Archer[/name] is not bad…I’m not sure it’s The [name]One[/name], but I do like it!

Thank you all for your continued suggestions! These are fabulous! Keep the brainstorm coming

I immediately thought of [name]Emrys[/name] for you as well. It’s the Welsh version of [name]Ambrose[/name], but is st famous for being the second half of the mythical [name]Merlin[/name]'s name (Myrddin [name]Emrys[/name]). It’s used in [name]Wales[/name] exclusively as a ma,e name, though it’s old fashioned nowadays.

Also, avoiding c/k/x and -an/-en:

[name]Aeneas[/name]
[name]Atlas[/name]
Bedivere
[name]Diarmaid[/name]
[name]Evander[/name]
[name]Gawain[/name]
[name]Geraint[/name]
[name]Joachim[/name]
[name]Leander[/name]
[name]Melchior[/name]
[name]Niall[/name]
Numitor
[name]Orestes[/name]
[name]Orpheus[/name]
[name]Owain[/name]
Glendower (had to follow [name]Owain[/name] with this)
[name]Taliesin[/name]
[name]Aneurin[/name]
Pelennor
Pyrrhus
Remiel
Sylvius

I’m clearly a fan of [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] - mine is after my grandfather, but it’s hard to not think of [name]Alexander[/name] the Great.

@blade - Hubby and I have talked about [name]Emrys[/name] and we just don’t feel like it’s the one for us. I love the history of the name and the association with [name]Merlin[/name]! That is pretty cool. I love your suggestion list! So many unique ideas! My favorites are [name]Atlas[/name] (this is so going on the list of possibilities), [name]Melchior[/name] (love the association with the [name]Magi[/name]), Numitor (I’ve never heard this, but it’s quite nice. I looked up the myth but everywhere I check says “meaning unknown.” [name]Do[/name] you happen to know what it means?), [name]Orpheus[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name]), and [name]Taliesin[/name] (another favorite…the Bardic association makes me happy). I like Remiel and Sylvius too. I would be very interested in if you have any more ideas, if this is a sampling

@mamamaassy - [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] is a lovely combo, and I do like the meaning. My hesitation comes from the fact that [name]Alexander[/name] (and variants) is quite the popular name in my circles and even more popular as a middle name. That being said, it might be a good balance for the exotic [name]Caspian[/name]. I’ll have to think about it, because my tendency is to avoid popular like the plague, haha!

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Riley[/name] (“courageous”)

[name]Glad[/name] to have helped. You have a fantastic (literally!) style and it was fun to think outside the box a bit.

I don’t know the meaning of Numitor, but I choose to believe it’s related to the word “Numinous,” which means “ethereal, spiritual, supernatural, sublime.” -tor is a morpheme which means “one who does,” so roughly = one who creates the sublime.

[name]Atlas[/name] = obvious cartographic associations, and the myth of the one who holds the world on his shoulders is striking
[name]Melchior[/name] = the [name]Magi[/name], as you noted… very romantic, the notion of the Persian kings traveling thousands of miles across bandit-infested wastelands just to follow a star
[name]Orpheus[/name] = SUCH a wonderful mythological hero; one who would travel to the underworld to rescue his love
[name]Taliesin[/name] = the half-mythical Welsh bard who preserved a great deal of the old Welsh cultures’ history and legend
Remiel = a non-canonical angel who shepherds dying children to the afterlife; an angel of gentleness
Sylvius = a saintly name, derived from the forest. Several early popes were called [name]Silvanus[/name].

I’ll try to think of some more options along the same vein.

I love so many of the names on your lists! [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name] are some of my favourites! You’ve had some beautiful suggestions, I’ll try to add a few more!

[name]Emory[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Remi[/name]
[name]Tennessee[/name]
[name]Magnus[/name]
[name]Theo[/name]
[name]Remus[/name]
[name]Alcott[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name]
[name]Maverick[/name]
[name]Everest[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Jeremiah[/name]
[name]Teo[/name]
[name]West[/name]
[name]Levi[/name]
[name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Jericho[/name]
[name]Grey[/name]
[name]Steel[/name]
[name]Slate[/name]
[name]Zinc[/name]
[name]Cobalt[/name]
[name]Flint[/name]
[name]Julius[/name]
[name]August[/name]
[name]Noble[/name]
[name]Birch[/name]

I hope these are close to what you’re looking for! Good luck!

@saracita00 - I do like [name]Silvanus[/name] much better than [name]Silvius[/name]. It has more of a strong, masculine sound, while still retaining that ethereal feel.

@mill1020 - I like the meaning of [name]Riley[/name], but the name itself isn’t really our style. Thank you for the suggestion!

@blade - You are really seducing me into loving some of these names! I think it’s wonderful that you do so much research, and that you understand that a name is more than just syllables to me, that it has to have depth and meaning and substance! [name]Atlas[/name] is climbing to the top of my list. [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Atlas[/name] is such a noble striking combination. I like how they subtly go together in meaning as well. Numitor/Numinous is just fantastic. “[name]Ethereal[/name] and spiritual” is exactly what I look for in a name! I love [name]Melchior[/name] but it doesn’t flow quite as well, and I wonder if that makes it seem a bit unwieldy given the length of the name as a whole. But the meaning is so rich, I can’t let go of it yet. I’m even beginning to consider the shorter, but no less potent [name]Magi[/name] as a word name… I still like [name]Orpheus[/name] but Hubby isn’t as keen. [name]Taliesin[/name] will have to be let go, as it’s an ex-boyfriend’s nickname. Remiel has sent me on a whole separate hunt for angel names, turning up such gems as Raziel, Israfel, and Sammael (a perfect alternative to the overdone [name]Samuel[/name]). As mentioned, I definitely prefer [name]Silvanus[/name] to [name]Silvius[/name]/Sylvius.

@entangler - Thank you! It’s been lovely to get so many positive responses! From your list I like [name]Dashiell[/name] (though it seems to be exploding in popularity, which makes me hold back), [name]Jericho[/name], [name]Grey[/name], [name]Cobalt[/name] (even though I can’t use it because that would be three K sounds in a row), and [name]Noble[/name] the best. [name]Jericho[/name] is probably my favorite on the list, but it sounds a little funny up against the K of our last name. Darn that K, haha, it makes everything so difficult!

Other suggestions I have been given lately, that I would [name]LOVE[/name] to get your opinions on:

[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Moses[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Rome[/name] (I was all “well I can’t do [name]Roman[/name] because of the double -n endings…” and voila!)
[name]Caspian[/name] Vetiver (this appeals to me as an herbalist, and it has a warm feeling, probably because the double VE makes me think of velvet)
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Alistair[/name]/[name]Alisdair[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Seth[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name] Swift (something about this really appeals to me. Swift is one of those words that is so simple but conveys so many feelings and images in that one little syllable!)
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Shakespeare[/name] (I know, right?? But somehow I’m nuts over it! I daren’t bring this one to Hubby for fear of being “laughed off the stage” as it were…)
[name]Caspian[/name] [name]Gabriel[/name] (instead of the [name]Gabriel[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name] that was on our list a while back)

Thank you all for your help!

I love the name [name]Caspian[/name]. If I have a boy, my husband and I are planning on naming him [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Gray[/name].

Great choice with [name]Caspian[/name]!

Of your latest combos, [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Moses[/name] and [name]Caspian[/name] Swift are my favourites. I had never thought of Swift as a name before but there’s something really captivating about it, and I love it with [name]Caspian[/name]. I also love the previous suggestion [name]Caspian[/name] [name]Archer[/name]. It was actually the first one that sprang to my mind.
