Middle name help

My SO and I are having a very difficult time narrowing down on middle names for our top girl names. It was so easy for our top boy names which are Solomon Troy, Linus Jay and Samson Jay. Last name starts with v@n and is 3 syllables long.

Our top girl names we like are Polly, Maeve and Alice. We would like the middle names to have some sort of significance to us or be a family name. Here is the VERY long list of potential middle names we like that is either a family name or has some significance:

Louise/Louisa
Renee
Anne
Winter
Claire/Clara
Susan/Susannah (any forms of Susan)
Josephine
Lillian
Lucille/Lucy
Catherine
Harriet
Maxine
Minerva
Clarinda
Pearl
Jane
Joy
Augusta
Blanche
Eleanor
Rhoda
Kennedy
Ruth
Margaret
Martha
Fern
Flora

*Non-family names/names we just like

Greer
Blythe
Ever
Judith
Gretchen
Vesper
Winsome
Dove

I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I can see why you’re having trouble narrowing down your options – they’re all fabulous names.

I would start by asking myself which names hold the most meaning. Which family members would I most like to honour or remember by using their name? Which name stories would I most enjoy sharing with my child? I’m likely to have an intuitive response towards some names over others. I would focus my attention there.

I don’t know the meaning these hold but for whatever it’s worth, here are my top four favourites for each:

[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

I would drop [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] as a first name with a V last name, they kind of run together and I could see people constantly thinking you said “Mae Lastname” instead of “Maeve Lastname”.

[name_f]Polly[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] are great though. Some combos I like using your middle names:

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Winter[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Maxine[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Fern[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Judith[/name_f]

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Dove[/name_f]

Thank you! I think looking closer at the names and their significance of how we want to tell them why we chose their names really does narrow down our choices. That makes me think about Augusta. The month, August, is important to us but I didn’t know if using August in the middle name for a girl would sound ok or not. I found Augusta in my family tree and thought that would be a nice to pass down a family name and have the special month.

[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Winter[/name_f] are just so perfect!

Thank you for your thoughts on [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. We don’t plan on dropping the name as it’s a name we both really love. It’s very hard for us to agree on names. When we say it with our last name, we don’t run into it sounding like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] “Last name”. I think most people will actually think her name is [name_f]Mae[/name_f] and not [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] at first just because how rare it is as a name from where we are from. We love it too much for it to be an issue.

Thank you for your combo ideas. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Winter[/name_f] are definitely a top pick for us.
