We are having a baby and the middle names we love form a word, but it might have a slightly negative meaning. Should we avoid this? We prefer not to change the order of the names. And in which situations do people use middle name initials?
I wouldn’t call cat a bad word? My grandmas initials are [name_f]Cat[/name_f] and she loves it (because she loves cats lol). I don’t think it’s issue if it’s not negative or vulgar.
You’re right. C.A.T. was a wrong example, so I removed it from my original post.
I think it depends on how bad the word is. Would you be okay sharing what the initials would be? Without knowing it’s hard to give advice.
Using some examples, I don’t think ‘DIE’ or ‘[name_m]ROB[/name_m]’ are that bad, despite not having the best connotations as words (DIE is worse than [name_m]ROB[/name_m] imo, but still livable- not pun intended haha). I know a girl named [name_u]Allison[/name_u] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] S… and she jokes about her initials often- they don’t really bother her. However, I would avoid things that spell curses or things that are close to them (ex- [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_u]Carter[/name_u])
The word is not a curse or something vulgair. But it is a negative adjective to describe a person, something like ‘FAT’. But I wonder in which situations people use middle name initials. We live in Europe where middle name initials are far less common than in the US. No one calls himself [name_u]Michael[/name_u] J. [name_m]Fox[/name_m] or [name_m]John[/name_m] F. [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] over here.
Middle initials aren’t used much here either. Really just on formal forms like registering for school, job applications, stuff like that, and usually that’s the middle name not just initial.
We can’t really give you proper feedback unless we know what the initials spell. In general I don’t think initials are that big a deal. [name_m]Just[/name_m] look how many celebrities have the initials BS for example.
This.
A family member’s initials were E.W.W. and that was apparently a big deal. But I know several people with the initials E.W. and they had never even made that connection.
Knowing the initials would greatly help in giving input.
If it’s not a word with negative connotations it should be okay, but just make sure you think through whatever combo you have. I have a friend whose initials are KFC and she hates it. She loves the names individually just not the combo of the initials, so try and avoid anything like that if you can
This has come up on here before and I had just finished initialing a pile of medical papers. The baby would have the initials IMP, and I said I would have been delighted to write I.M.P. on every one of those pages!
My friend had the initials W.A.R. and her feelings were…how could her parents have been so thoughtless! She was happy to marry even though she ended up with W.A.D.
A baby name book gives [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] [name_m]Young[/name_m], initials [name_u]KAY[/name_u] as the perfect set as the girl used the nn [name_u]Kay[/name_u]. This could work out for a [name_u]SAM[/name_u] or [name_u]CAL[/name_u] as long as you start with the last name and choose the other 2 accordingly.
I have a friend who uses initials [name_f]CAT[/name_f] as her nn despite the fact that she divorced the T and is now married to an F.
I had a monogramed blouse once. I was told that the surname initial was placed in the center and made larger than the first and middle, sort of a diamond shape when done. Odd.
My husband was agreeable to my choice of baby names, but insisted that the first and middle be the same, so we have a CCM, WWM, JJM and GGM.
If you haven’t been instructed to “please initial the following documents” I’d guess you’re still pretty young. It comes up with lawyers, hospitals, investments, etc.
If it makes you cringe, rethink. I know a [name_f]Phelicia[/name_f]. Also a [name_u]Finn[/name_u] named [name_m]Phineas[/name_m]. [name_f]Caitlynn[/name_f] can be [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f]. All these can change initials.
Also, you could add a second middle name.
I know a girl whose initials were almost A.S.S., her parents changed her middle name to something else, but she still had some kids change her middle initial to an S on a school project she had her initials written on.
If you can avoid it, I would. What if you switched the middle and first names around if you like the names if it’ll help?
[name_u]True[/name_u]- I do calligraphy, the last initial goes in the middle for monograms. (So I actually always check if the initials work with last initial at the end AND in the middle )
Adding a second middle name is also another great option to break up suboptimal initials.
