Middle Name Options - Short or Classic?

You guys are probably tired of me posting about my girls’ names, but I think I’ve finally found my ideal sister for [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] - thanks to all the support on my last post!

So, our top two girls’ names are now [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]. I’m pretty sure DH is on board with [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] (i.e. he didn’t cringe when I said it the other day!), and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is the one name we’ve both loved for a while.

Our last name is slightly challenging as it starts and ends with “o”, and is a city name (think [name_f]Florida[/name_f], Disney, etc.). I’m working on some combos with [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] for our list, and could use your help.

Here’s my big dilemma: I cannot decide if I want middles that are just names I like more than our classic, traditional, family-honoring options. This is where you come in! My current list looks something like this:

My favorites are [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]! [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] are my second favorites.
I’m personally not a fan of honor names and wouldn’t use one for several reasons (I prefer other names, it sounds difficult picking just two relatives to honor and leaving out others etc). That said, you should do what’s right for your family.
For names I’d recommend checking out the US top 500 most popular names, you’d find a lot of names your style! I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] & [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u], but if you want to do family names for both, I’d choose [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Leona[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].

Can’t go wrong with that list!

I’m really glad to hear such positive feedback on [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]! Admittedly, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] is probably my favorite combo (just because I love [name_u]Sloane[/name_u]…and I know most people don’t), and I was hoping to find another short spunky name for [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]!

Honestly, I love all the [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] combos…[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] was harder for me. Your feedback is helpful, though!

I sometimes feel the same way about name combos. I want to use honor names, but then I also want to use my “I just like it” names too. My husband and I have talked about doing two middle names for this very reason - one honor name and one “fun” name. Obviously, having two middle names isn’t for everyone, but if stuck between the two choices, I’m a big fan of honor names. That’s a personal choice though.

I really like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Leona[/name_f]. It’s stunning.

I also adore [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u],

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] are fantastic together. Equivalent in vintage charm and sass.

I also like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] with [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], and [name_f]Francine[/name_f] with [name_f]Georgia[/name_f].

My personal preference is choosing favorite names over family names unless they coincide.

From your list of family names for middles, [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_m]Davis[/name_m] really stands out to me. Are there other family surname names you could use for [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]'s middle?

I do love the idea of using [name_m]Davis[/name_m] - it’s my mother in law’s maiden name.

I’d love to use my own maiden name, but it’s a tougher one to work with: DeBord.

None really stand out, but maybe I just need a fresh opinion!

Another potential family name would be [name_f]Danielle[/name_f]. That is my given middle (though I took my maiden name when I got married) and honors my dad, [name_u]Danny[/name_u] [name_m]David[/name_m].

I do however think both [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] are perfect!

I love [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] with your surname! I suppose it could be very place-ey, but it always reminds me of the actor over the city, I suppose? I think [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] are stunning! [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Leona[/name_f] and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] are really lovely, too, but I’m in a [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] funk lately. :stuck_out_tongue:

If I had to pick one, surprisingly, it’d be [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (she’s so sweet and ladylike!), even though I have [name_u]Grey[/name_u] in half the combos on my list lol (boys’ list, to be fair, but I like [name_u]Grey[/name_u]/[name_u]Gray[/name_u] as a middle for a girl, too, and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] is what I was initially drawn to on your list!).

I do love the trend! The name for [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] in this one would be [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_u]Jean[/name_u], which could be cute. However, this isn’t really a person I’d want to honor, and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] isn’t a name I love. But, the surname idea is fab, and I think we may be able to find something that works! I’ll just have to do some digging into my father’s side of the family!

Thanks for your feedback! I usually lean toward the [name_u]Grey[/name_u] spelling, but for some reason, [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] just feels right! I do love [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but someone close is using [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] so it may lose a bit of its luster.
