My 5 year old is so excited about his sister and declared a few days ago that he came up with the perfect name…
‘[name_f]Starlight[/name_f]!’
Of course we aren’t going to use the name [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] as a first name but dh and I talked about it last night and he says ‘Why not let that be her middle name? He really picked it with love.’
I am not sure what to think about this one. I love the idea of involving my son and his excitment is so cute, but I don’t want her to grow up and roll her eyes at her middle name. Our 2 yr old daughter has a rather ‘hippie’ name so we are told - so I suppose this would follow suit?
Thoughts? I do not like [name_f]Star[/name_f] on it’s own, but any other suggestions would be helpful
Hmm, [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] is not for me I’m afraid, but it does have a lovely story behind it
Could you use another name meaning star or light? Like [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Estee[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f]?
I’m not sure how I feel about [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] as a name, but I love that you want to include your children in the naming process.
The way my parents included us in naming our siblings was they put a list on the fridge and everyone could put their name contributions on the list. All names would be discussed, but mom and dad always had the final say. We could all put as many as we wanted on there, and sometimes the list was 50 names long. It made us feel like we were contributing even if our suggestion wasn’t the final one that was picked. They also made sure to discuss with us their final couple of options so we could tell them which we liked better. One year my 4 year old sister really wanted to name my brother Boots after the monkey in [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u]. When the name wasn’t picked she got over it, but she had fun being able to contribute and telling people what she wanted to name her brother. Maybe it’s an idea for you to try to involve your kids in the naming process. If [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] isn’t the one, maybe if given the opportunity your son will come up with another name that is. Or maybe just knowing that his opinions and ideas are being considered is enough. If [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] is the name you feel you want to use than go for it, but also know that there are other ways to include your child in picking out a name.
@ew314 - I like the idea of a ‘hippie’ ish middle name to match my daughters first name so the idea of starlight doesn’t bother me too much I just think it is a bit much even for us if that makes sense. lol Your suggestions while beautiful just aren’t our style, although Estee is intriguing. hmmm…
Thanks @squidly I was more looking for suggestions to make Starlight more usuable He is the only one of our 4 kids who really has his heart invested in being part of the naming process, the others don’t care much.
@roseofjune, that is interesting! First name suggestions to go with Starlit?
I think [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] is a lovely middle name! I must confess that [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] was on my favorite names list when I was between 7-18 years old. I still have a great fondness for it.
[name_f]Starlight[/name_f] - how cute! Also how fantastic that your son is so excited for his little sister!
Though I agree I don’t know how I’d feel growing up named [name_f]Starlight[/name_f].
There are some awesome ways to incorporate your son’s idea though.
You could choose a first name that means (or is related to) “[name_f]Star[/name_f]-” and a mn meaning “[name_m]Light[/name_m]”. Or even the other way around.
Choose [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] or a star name as a mn.
Choose and S name with a strong l sound…
The possibilities are endless. I personally like the idea of FN “[name_f]Star[/name_f]” MN “[name_m]Light[/name_m]”
So here are some suggestions along those lines:
[name_f]Astra[/name_f] (English derived from Greek) [name_u]Lior[/name_u] (Hebrew - alternative (E)[name_f]Liora[/name_f])
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] (Welsh) [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (Spanish)
[name_f]Tara[/name_f] (Hindi) [name_f]Sorcha[/name_f] (Gaelic)
[name_u]Vesper/name_u (Esperanto) [name_f]Zora[/name_f] (Serbian)
I would use [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] as a middle, definitely. It doesn’t matter what other people think is “hippie” or not when it’s so beautiful and has a wonderful story.
I think starlit would be a beautiful alternative to starlight. A name that immediately came to mind was [name_f]Starlit[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u], however as you mentioned it may be a little to “hippie”. I also like [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Starlit[/name_f], [name_f]Diane[/name_f] [name_f]Starlight[/name_f], and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] [name_f]Starlight[/name_f]. However, it is hard to know with out knowing your naming style. What are some names you like or have considered in the past?
I really love [name_f]Starlight[/name_f]. I think it’s unique and very beautiful
Some other suggestions: Twilight, [name_f]Twyla[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Estela[/name_f], [name_f]Starlit[/name_f], [name_f]Nova[/name_f]
Here are some lovely combinations that sound great with [name_f]Starlit[/name_f]. [name_f]Eve[/name_f]/[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Starlit[/name_f] is my favorite because of the image it portrays.
I stayed simple yet sophisticated, with names that convey a muted sense of wonder to go along with [name_f]Starlit[/name_f].
I’ve really warmed up to it while searching for FN, and think it’s a WONDERFUL middle name. It’s so mysterious and beautiful.
I got all pregnant, emotional, and teary when I read all your positive responses! I was gearing up to hear how crazy we are for even considering it! So we are sold! We are using with [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] or [name_f]Starlit[/name_f] as a middle! I agree that the story just makes it even more beautiful.
Any suggestions for a first name/middle name combo? My daughters name is [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f] [name_u]Reign[/name_u] (from an old hymnal at church not so much the bird) If that helps at all. My youngest son is [name_m]Madoc[/name_m] [name_m]Law[/name_m].
Names we have considered this pregnancy are: [name_f]Odelia[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] and [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] but none have stuck yet…
@Roseofjune! We must of posted at the same time, thank you for the beautiful suggestions!! I love so many of them!! I am over the moon excited to start narrowing down this sweet baby’s name. It has really been a struggle and you all have helped so much
I am truly giddy over [name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Starlit[/name_f] or even [name_f]Starlit[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. My son would be over the moon if his name ended up being her first name!
Oooh, [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] or [name_f]Starlit[/name_f] would be beautiful! So magical!
I really, really like [name_f]Starlit[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]! So pretty!
I also like [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] [name_f]Starlight[/name_f], [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] [name_f]Starlight[/name_f]/[name_f]Starlit[/name_f], and [name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Starlight[/name_f]/[name_f]Starlit[/name_f]!
Its a cute gesture but [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] is a terrible name for a person to have to go through life with, even if it is just a middle name its not my style.
I think this is an awesome, rather fun tradition if you are up for it.
If your children had more traditional names, I would say no. However, since you’ve mentioned your use of “hippie” sounding names, why not?
I think it’s beautiful, and you will always have a nice story to tell along with it. [name_m]How[/name_m] cool of an image does [name_f]Starlight[/name_f] draw up? [name_u]Love[/name_u] it as a middle!
