I am not currently TTC, so this is mainly for fun/to get ideas for the future…
Question: if you were using the name “[name_m]Yuri[/name_m]” for a middle name, what first name would you pick to go along with it?
ETA - we’re going for the Ukrainian association. Since it’s been brought to my attention that “Yuri” is a thing in Japan, I’m gonna say we’d use the “Yury” spelling instead.
Thanks for the heads up though. I had definitely seen that it was a Japanese female name, which I was ok with, but the other meaning is a definite no no with that spelling.
I actualky don’t think the other association is that big of a deal considering [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] is a very used names still, and when used for men (it is generally used as a gender neutral name in Japan) doesn’t bear that association. There’s actually a very popular anime with a main character named [name_m]Yuri[/name_m]. (There’s also a Russian character in it named [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] as well.)
I have never heard of the Japanese connotations for [name_m]Yuri[/name_m]. To me, [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] or [name_m]Juri[/name_m] is a Slavic name and my first (and only) association is [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] Gagarin.
I’m thinking that anime is more a phenomenon among people younger than me (I’m in my 30s). I don’t know whether the anime influence will be a lasting one on non-Japanese culture and I would honestly only take this into account if you happen to live in an area with a big [name_f]Asian[/name_f] population or have other ties to that part of the world.
I hope that you will use [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] without spelling it differently just to avoid the connotation. [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] is a well-established and respected name and it feels a bit ignorant to me to suggest you shouldn’t use it just because of some currently popular anime (although it is certainly good to be aware of that).
Thanks for the opinions on this. [name_m]Yuri[/name_m]/[name_m]Yury[/name_m] has a special meaning in my husband’s family and we’re toying with the idea of using it should we have a boy at some point. We’d prefer the [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] spelling but had never heard of the anime connection whatsoever.
[name_m]Yuri[/name_m] feels rather common to me, it’s nog hugely popular here, but it’s common enough. Never heard of the Japanese term. First names I’d use with middle name [name_m]Yuri[/name_m]:
I’m having a hard time finding first names that flow well with middle name [name_m]Yuri[/name_m], somehow it has a better flow if [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] is in the first name spot. I wouldn’t worry about the Japanese connection if I were you, surely that’s not the first thing that comes to mind for most people.
I wouldn’t worry about the anime meaning. In Japanese, [name_m]Yuri[/name_m] (the Russian/Ukrainian man’s name) and yuri (the anime term) are spelled and pronounced differently. In my view, the only people who would conflate the two would be English-speaking anime fans who don’t read/speak Japanese.
Yeah, that’s kinda the problem we’ve run into - difficult as a mn. We’re hesitant to use as a first with our super Ukrainian last name. We think it might be too much. Thanks.
Okay just so we’re clear, yuri is japanese lesbian porn and I’m glad we’re steering clear of naming a kid after that. You dont want the anime geeks of all people teasing your son.
