Middle Names for Elise

After much back and forth between [name_f]Elise[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], my husband and I have decided on [name_f]Elise[/name_f] as my baby’s first name. Please let us know which one of these middle names is your favorite!

[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (husband doesn’t like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f])
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] (I was so in love with this combo for a while but I’m slowly falling out of love)
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] (A bit hesitant due to the Aunt [name_f]Flo[/name_f] reference)
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] (I like it, but I don’t love [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] mispronounced which I’ve heard is common)
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Noemie[/name_f] (This one is my favorite and I like [name_f]Noemie[/name_f] with the accent aigu over the first e like [name_f]Noémie[/name_f] because we’re of [name_u]French[/name_u] descent, but then we’d have to put it over the first E of [name_f]Elise[/name_f] as well, which would make it Élise [name_f]Noémie[/name_f]; I’m not sure if that would be too obnoxious!)
Elise Camille (I love it, but I love Camille pronounced the French way only)

Any other options? Also, how would you pronounce [name_f]Elise[/name_f]? Is it uncommon for it to be pronounced El-leez or el-LEE-z (with the “eh” beginning, not ee or short i)? I’ve heard i-LEE-s and uh-LEE-s and the likes, which I don’t like, so I want to be sure! Thanks!!

I would pronounce it like that.

Also, I love the name [name_f]Elise[/name_f]! You can call her [name_f]Elle[/name_f] as a nickname :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

I think she will get multiple pronunciations. I was actually thinking [name_f]El[/name_f]-leese. Rhyming with geese.

My favorite middle is [name_f]Noemie[/name_f] or [name_u]Camille[/name_u].

I’ve never once heard it pronounced with a Z sound at the end & I’ve known a million girls named [name_f]Elise[/name_f]. They all use/d eh-lees, uh-lees, and ee-lees pretty interchangeably. [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Noémie[/name_f] is my favourite combo.

Elise [name_f]Noemie[/name_f] is so pretty. I pronouce it uh-lees

That is unfortunate because it would actually be pronounced Eh-Leez (with the z ending) the [name_u]French[/name_u] way. :sob: I’ll probably have to deal with “mispronunciations” (if we do decide to pronounce it Élise; uh-LEE-s would be an option too) since we’ll be raising her in the U.S. I wanted to double check because we are immigrants and have not known anyone here who is called [name_f]Elise[/name_f] (only in [name_f]France[/name_f]). Thank you for your insight!

Rosalind is beautiful, thank you! It’s pronounced [name_f]Roz[/name_f](Rahz)-lind, yes? :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Elise is a beautiful choice. I’ve known women and girls with the pronunciation eh-LEES and Eh-LEEZ, so I think it’s going to be fine.

Elise [name_f]Noemie[/name_f] is divine! I also really like [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] because it flows very well.

I love [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], and [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Noemie[/name_f]!
I don’t think adding an aigu mark would be too obnoxious, but it would most likely be left off of unformal documents (ie, school assignments).
I’m an Elise myself, and I pronounce it somewhere between [name_f]El[/name_f]-lees and Uh-lees

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! :relaxed:

Elise is lovely! :yellow_heart: [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites of your combos are [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], and [name_f]Elise[/name_f] [name_f]Noemie[/name_f]–I love all three. I’m not as keen on the flow of [name_f]Elise[/name_f] with an “s” ending middle ([name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f]), although I really like those names in general. As far as pronunciation goes, the Elises I’ve known have all been uh-LEES or eh-LEES (pretty much interchangeably) so that would be my default (i’m in the US for reference). But I wouldn’t have any trouble with the pronunciation you’re going for if I were corrected! As long as you don’t mind correcting people, I think you should be fine.

I just came back to say that if you told people how to say it, they should adapt. For instance, I knew a Belgian girl named [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in school, but she pronounced it like I say [name_f]Elise[/name_f] (Uh-leese). I never questioned it and especially since you’re an immigrant, I think people will follow your lead.

Of course, if people are just reading her name, they’ll default to their usual pronunciation, but I bet that can be fixed quickly enough.
