I know some really dislike middles for pets and some who really like them! What are your thoughts on middles for pets? Is it worth using them or not?
All of my pets have had middle names. Not really any reason other than they didn’t fully feel like a part of the family without them (not sure why) and I like middle names.
My dog has a middle name, but didn’t for a few years. I thought it was weird at first then I looked at her and said to her “If your name wasn’t [name_f]Juno[/name_f], I think it’d be [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f], why don’t we make that your middle name.” She looked at me funny. She mostly goes by the nicknames JuJu, and [name_u]June[/name_u], but sometimes I call her [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f] when she is really in a funny mood. I can’t think of anything for my other dog [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]. I sometimes call him “big goof”, because that’s what he is, but no other name comes to me except [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]. That always just felt right.
My cousin’s wife’s family passes down the same middle name to the first daughter in each generation. So when she and my cousin got a female dog, they gave that middle name to the dog. It was tongue-in-cheek, but they actually call the dog by its first and middle name fairly often. It just sounds right somehow.
Now they have a daughter, and she has the middle name too. I find it hilarious.
Moral of the story: It’s your pet. Give it five names if you want—or just one. Whatever feels right … or makes you laugh.
I didn’t with my childhood pet I named because I never thought about it but my last pet got a middle name. It was mostly to use as an honor name (one that I wouldn’t want to give to a child) but I’m glad I did it because he got called his first and middle name quite often, along with his handful of other nicknames. I had him since about 2 months old so he knew his name well.
I have a list of potential future pet names and all of them have middles.
My pets always have middle names. It may be sort of pointless and silly, but if you want to give your pet a middle name, it’s worth it. If you don’t want to, there’s no reason that you should? My cats name is [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] but she goes by many names; [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], the list goes on
See, my grandma is one of those “over-the-top” dog moms, who makes the dog fresh meals everyday and all of that, to the extent that my siblings and I joke about the dog being our aunt. She gave her beloved dog a middle name because she genuinely considered it to be a child of hers. Whatever makes her happy, I suppose.
My husband and I gave our cat a middle name, because it sounds more substantial when we scold her
My corn snake’s has a middle name, given to her by my mother, as a joke, but since we found out she’s actually male, after 8 years of thinking she was female, her joke of a male middle name works pretty well.
My dog also has a middle name [name_f]Dee[/name_f], which originally stood for dog, but has ended up just being by itself. We call her her first and middle name a lot, and her initials.
Most of my animals have come to me as adult animals, already named, so yes, I have given them middles and secret names and nicknames.
[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] became [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and Bon Bon.
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m] became [name_m]Clyde[/name_m] [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] (after [name_m]George[/name_m] [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] in Capra) and [name_u]Nick[/name_u] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and Clydesie
[name_f]Venus[/name_f] became [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] [name_f]Venus[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] and [name_f]ViVI[/name_f].
KC became KC [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] and [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] and [name_f]Muriel[/name_f].
I loved my animals with all my heart so giving them many names just revealed that.
All my animals have had middle names! (All the ones named in my lifetime, anyway). Our first dog was called Patch [name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] because those were our last 3 choices and he just was not a [name_u]Billy[/name_u] or a [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] at all, so they became his middles.
Our cat was rescued at 10 and was already called [name_f]Molly[/name_f] but we constantly nicknamed her [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Cat[/name_f], so I like to say her “real” name is [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Cat[/name_f] and her “diva” name is Molinda [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] haha
Our current dog is [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f], her middle names were between [name_f]April[/name_f] (the month she was born) and [name_f]May[/name_f] (the month she came home) and we like [name_f]May[/name_f] more. It suits her great and she knows that’s her full name.
Our next puppy (coming home later this year) has a first name that is old fashioned to match [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and a middle that means “happiness”.
I like to give them middle names to make them feel even more a part of the family.
