Milano-- unisex or not?

[name_f]Milano[/name_f] is a place name with great significance to my hubby & me. We’ll be TTC some time in early 2014. We enjoy middle names which pay homage to a family member, honoring a place that holds special significance to the couple, showcases the parents’ interests, etc. As for first names, he and I are on totally opposite sides of the spectrum.

This is a hypothetical child at this point, and I am spending an obscene amount of time researching and considering names… even for a self-professed name snob (I’m far beyond a name nerd!) like myself. [name_f]Milano[/name_f] would be the child’s middle name-- if I can convince him it’s an awesome middle name. We’d like to wait to get to “know” the baby I’m growing inside me before considering a first name.

I’m just conflicted… Is it appropriate as a girl or boy name? Is it unisex? Does it suit a boy more than a girl? vice versa? Any names that are similar that may work in place of [name_f]Milano[/name_f]? Opinions, please & thank you.

I love the idea of using [name_f]Milano[/name_f] as a name in general- classy, unique, exotic-but-familiar. I’m not sure how people who are actually from there would see it though- from reactions on this site it seems some people would find it really weird if the name of their city was used on a person. The “o” ending makes it seem masculine to me, but I think it’s okay for a girl too. What about [name_f]Milana[/name_f]/[name_f]Milena[/name_f] or [name_f]Mila[/name_f] for a girl which are similar?

[name_f]Milano[/name_f] was the name of the store where we met, even though most associate it with a city.

I love [name_f]Milena[/name_f] for a girl. Thanks for the suggestion (:

I know what you mean about city names though… I see all these rising names- [name_m]Edison[/name_m], [name_m]Princeton[/name_m], [name_u]Camden[/name_u]… and I’m thinking, “Those are all cities in [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u]. You probably wouldn’t want to name you kid that if you’d actually been there…”

I would use these names for the respective genders.

[name_f]Milana[/name_f]/[name_f]Milena[/name_f]/[name_f]Mila[/name_f] for a girl
[name_f]Milano[/name_f]/[name_u]Milan[/name_u] for a boy

As a middle name, I think you can use it for either.

I think it is a boy name and perfect as a middle name.
I still think girls name end in -a and boys names end in -o.

I think of the cookies when I think of [name_f]Milano[/name_f] but it is a middle name so I really like it

But the cookies are so yummy!! lol

No offense meant by my [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] city comment. I think they are all perfectly fine names in and of themselves, but I just can’t shake the [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] connotation in my mind. I’m sure plenty of people think [name_f]Milano[/name_f] is the equivalent to the name Nabisco.

I generally prefer first names in the top 1000, though I dislike unusual spellings. However, I think middle names are perfect for something offbeat, fun, and meaningful. On paper, you’re generally [name_f]Jane[/name_f] Q. [name_f]Doe[/name_f] anyway, not [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Quenby[/name_f] [name_f]Doe[/name_f].

[name_f]Milena[/name_f] is one I keep running across, and it’s been on my short list of girls’ first names long before I ever met my husband.

Awesome news I almost forgot to share-- I convinced my husband today that it’s an awesome name and we should use [name_f]Milano[/name_f] or something like it for a middle name. WINNING! Still considering opinions from my fellow name nerds (-:

I, too, think of [name_f]Milano[/name_f] cookies…yum! Aside from that, it does feel very boy. I can see it on a girl though, as well, but I would definitely call her [name_f]Mila[/name_f].

[name_f]Milano[/name_f] feels masculine to me. I think [name_f]Milana[/name_f] or [name_f]Milani[/name_f] would work for a girl though.

Maybe I’m over-thinking this. This thread is making me wonder-

  • Is [name_m]Milo[/name_m] too far of a stretch for a boy name?
  • [name_f]Do[/name_f] I want to name my hypothetical next kid a word people associate with Pepperidge Farm cookies?
  • [name_m]How[/name_m] far can I stray from [name_f]Milano[/name_f], and end up with a name we like?
And I started this thread asking if the name could be unisex…

closing thread…
