I am nearly always in the minority around here on this sort of question, but I think it could be a cute name. I’m probably persuaded by the fact that I know an adult woman - an artist - who goes by [name]Milo[/name]. I think her given name is [name]Miller[/name], but I’ve never heard her called anything but [name]Milo[/name]. She’s spunky, smart, and a little offbeat, and I have no problem picturing a little girl with the same characteristics. I also live in a place where girls often have boyish names, so that may influence me, too.
I do think lots of people will think she’s a boy, but that always happened to me even as a girl named [name]Jamie[/name]. It didn’t bother me at all. A feminine middle name might help. [name]Milo[/name] [name]Joy[/name] or the like. There’s also a girl who comes into my clinic called Millo. I can’t tell you the whole story behind the name, but I know it’s an old testament Biblical reference. I also like the suggestion of Milou.
As always, you should use whatever name you love. Few people in real life will have opinions as strong as those of us who spend our days hanging out in name forums, and [name]Milo[/name] doesn’t seem like a huge stretch with girls called [name]Riley[/name], [name]Tyler[/name], [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Reece[/name], and [name]Evan[/name] in classrooms all over the country.
I don’t like it and she would always be mistaken for a boy on paper. What about [name]Isla[/name]? [name]Shiloh[/name]? You could also call her Millicent or Millie and give her the nickname Milo.
The kids I nanny for have a friend named [name]Myla[/name], and she loves her name and gets compliments on it often. Her parents combined the first two letters of their names ([name]Mike[/name] and [name]Laura[/name]) to come up with [name]Mila[/name], then changed the ‘i’ to ‘y’ to avoid pronunciation confusion. I think its a lovely (and still unique) alternative to [name]Milo[/name] for a girl.
[name]Kim[/name]
Names4Real is (as always!) right. I’d completely forgotten about her, but there is a female character called [name]Milo[/name] in An American in [name]Paris[/name]! Now that’s really kind of clever, and to me it does open the door to [name]Milo[/name] for a girl.
I don’t mind conventionally masculine names on girls. Some of them just strike me as “why not?” while some seem less flexible. And yes - I do know a little boy called [name]Milo[/name], so maybe that’s behind my answer.
Friends of mine shortlisted [name]Asa[/name] for a girl years ago, and I thought it worked well on a daughter - but then I didn’t know any Asas then …
I’ve loved [name]Milo[/name] for a girl for a while now. I don’t see any reason why not to name a daughter [name]Milo[/name]. If you love it then use it. [name]Shiloh[/name] is used for girls. Why not [name]Milo[/name]? My favorite combo is [name]Milo[/name] [name]Dalila[/name].
[name]LOVE[/name] IT! I am having a boy, and my mom has a cat named [name]Milo[/name], so the name is out for us for anyway, but we were going to use i for either.
I am not one of those “boy names are for boys” people…and I think it could be absolutely adorable for a little girl! (I also really love this name on boys)
If you love it… go for it! I know a lot of people are super against using unisex or gender-bending names on girls, but if it sounds feminine to you, use it! My husband and I are due with our first child - a girl - in [name]November[/name], and we will be naming her [name]Micah[/name]. It sounds soft and pretty to me, so I don’t look at it like we’re giving her a boys name…we’re simply giving her a pretty name
Also, I personally pronounce [name]Mila[/name] with the “EYE” sound, but you could also spell it [name]Myla[/name] to prevent potential confusion.
I grew up with a “masculine” name, [name]Colbi[/name]… and it’s never bothered me at all! I have been mistaken for a boy on paper, of course, however I never found that to be challenging or demeaning… just something quirky, and kind of fun!
On the other hand, my brother’s name was [name]Jamie[/name] (short for [name]Jameson[/name]), and he never had any issues, either. I think many people put too much stock in genders!
Planning on naming my future daughter [name]Milo[/name] :o) I was writing a script and wanted a girl’s name that was a combination the parents’, [name]Michael[/name] and [name]Lori[/name], I came up with the obvious [name]Milo[/name] and thought hmmm, [name]Milo[/name] for a girl. As I developed her character I was deliberate in not making her a tomboy…she was dainty, played the piano, did ballet and had a penchant for pickles; and as the character evolved so did my love for [name]Milo[/name] as a girl’s name.
I’ve tried a few alternate spellings, (Mylo, Miloh, Milow, Miloe, Mailo) but I think [name]Milo[/name] looks the best, it’s phonetic and simple and “clean”. The name’s meaning differs depending on origin but the English meaning is merciful and in Germanic it’s peaceful; both of which I like.
When I tell people that’s what I’m planning for my first girl, they say, “As in the food drink?”, to which I respond “As in [name]Venus[/name] de [name]Milo[/name]” and that somehow makes it seem less “out there”. I still think [name]Milo[/name] is a great name for a boy but I wouldn’t use it…if I never had a girl (or for some now unforeseen reason didn’t use [name]Milo[/name]), I’d go with [name]Miles[/name] for my boy instead.
Btw: [name]Mila[/name] can also be pronounced My-la…and you can even spell it [name]Myla[/name] to ensure pronunciation if you like.
I don’t get the “can’t be a girl name it’s a boy name” argument unless the name is [name]Arthur[/name] or [name]Butch[/name] or any such overtly masculine name. [name]Milo[/name] is far from overtly masculine and while it may often be used for a boy (I even have a nephew with the name), it could work for a girl. In fact caty_beth89 is right to point out that [name]Shiloh[/name] isn’t far off. I think it’s kinda clever really.
I tend to like girly names for girls, but I can see where [name]Milo[/name] could work. It reminds me of [name]Marlo[/name] and [name]Shiloh[/name]. Cute and spunky. However, I do love the suggestions of [name]Maia[/name] [name]Louise[/name] nn [name]Milo[/name]!
I’m with those who said no. All boy to me. I will be meeting a little [name]Milo[/name] (male) soon. I’ve only ever heard it on males, though. I know a [name]Marlo[/name], [name]Maya[/name] and many [name]Mia[/name]'s (almost all w/fn [name]Amelia[/name]). Those are girl names (or more unisex names) and similar to [name]Milo[/name]. Would any of those interest you?
An emphatic NO from me. I despise boy names on girls and think the whole trend has very disturbing sociological undertones.
What about [name]Myla[/name]?
I think it works but moreso as a nickname. I think on a boy or girl [name]Milo[/name] is a bit childish sounding personally. I see the appeal. [name]Marlo[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] made it work & it is definitely cute…I would want a less cute/more mature option if I were called [name]Milo[/name] though. But people use names like [name]Molly[/name] all the time & it’s pretty much similar in vibe to me.
