Any opinions? I really like the name, but have only heard it as a boy’s name. What would you think if you heard it on a girl?
I do like [name]Mila[/name], but I think that is pronounced Me-la, right? I would prefer the “I” sound.
I am a firm believer that boy’s names are for boys. So [name]Milo[/name] for a girl is a no-go for me. [name]Do[/name] you by any chance like [name]Mia[/name]? Or [name]Maia[/name]? That has the “I” sound.
It wouldn’t be world-ending, but it doesn’t seem like the kind of name that would easily translate to a girl’s name. I can almost hear Rilo - as in indie band Rilo [name]Kiley[/name], though apparently the name came to one of the band members in a dream.
The other name that springs to mind is [name]Io[/name] - eye-oh, a nymph from Greek myth and a moon of [name]Jupiter[/name]. It’s super-short but I’ve always loved it.
In my opinion [name]Milo[/name] is strictly a boys’ name and should stay that way. It is very handsome on a boy but once used for a girl would lose its appeal entirely.
For a similar sounding girls’ name (though some of these are stretching it a bit) I suggest:
[name]Violet[/name]/[name]Viola[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Marlo[/name]/[name]Marlow[/name]/[name]Marlowe[/name]
[name]Isla[/name]
[name]Mila[/name]/[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Harlow[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Molly[/name]
[name]Willow[/name]
[name]Jemima[/name]
[name]Io[/name]/[name]Ione[/name]
Good luck!
@[name]Abby[/name]–Haha that is funny; Rilo [name]Kiley[/name] has been one of my favorite bands for years & I never knew the origin of the band’s name!
Anyway, regarding [name]Milo[/name] for a girl: I do think [name]Milo[/name] should be for the boys, and do love it for a boy…
You said you liked [name]Mila[/name], why not go for that? I think it’s a beautiful name. You COULD spell it [name]Myla[/name] if you think that’d help with any pronunciation issues, but personally I do like [name]Mila[/name] better.
I think [name]Milo[/name] would be a cute and fun nickname for a girl, but not as a formal name on a birth certificate. I’d use a feminine first name that sounds kind of like [name]Milo[/name], i.e. [name]Milena[/name], or I’d do a combination like [name]Maya[/name] [name]Louise[/name], and in both cases call her [name]Milo[/name] as a pet name.
I agree with the other responses. [name]IMO[/name], [name]Milo[/name] is very much a boy’s name.
My favourite cat’s name was [name]Milo[/name]! I love the name. But not for a girl (not [name]Rhys[/name] nor [name]Reilly[/name] for a girl either). See, I named my cat [name]Charlie[/name], after an orange tabby in a [name]Golden[/name] Book story – but then my 2 yr old son saw [name]Milo[/name] & [name]Otis[/name] and told me, “Not Chawie, Mama, Miwo.” So [name]Milo[/name] he was. He was a red Bengal and the first hospital cat for BC Pets & Friends. I still miss him.
There’s an old [name]Gene[/name] [name]Kelly[/name] movie called “An American in [name]Paris[/name]” and one of the characters is named [name]Milo[/name]. She’s named after the [name]Venus[/name] de [name]Milo[/name]. I always thought it would make a cute girl’s name, but I’m obviously in the minority.
I like the idea of it being a nickname too.
Good luck!
A resounding “no” from me.
I pronounce [name]Mila[/name] as Mill-la
I was also going suggest Rilo as an alternative, which I think is super cute. I have to say, I always get confused by girls with boy names, like [name]Evan[/name] and [name]Elliot[/name]. I’ve addressed many an email with “he” pronouns, when they were supposed to be shes. I assume that this is a common problem for these girls.
To me [name]Milo[/name] is either 1. a boy 2. a cat 3. a crop
The character from the [name]Gene[/name] [name]Kelly[/name] movie named for the [name]Venus[/name] de [name]Milo[/name] is a neat reference! Makes me a bit more open to it for a girl in theory. However, I think that using it as a nn would be safer. [name]Love[/name] the suggestion of a Mi- first name with an Lo- middle.
I also saw the name Milou (MEE-loo) on a site; it’s reportedly a short form of the French hyphenated name [name]Marie[/name]-[name]Louise[/name]. Cute!
[name]Milo[/name] is a boys names, and it would be a shame to see that change, IMHO.
[name]Mila[/name] (Meela) or [name]Juno[/name], or [name]Margo/name, or [name]Cleo[/name] ([name]Clio[/name]) might appeal to you!
[name]Araminta[/name]-[name]Love[/name] the idea of [name]Viola[/name]. I have heard [name]Violet[/name] more recently but not [name]Viola[/name].
I do think it would be cute on a girl, but I don’t know any little boys named [name]Milo[/name], so maybe that is why.
@names4real…I guess we are in the minority. And the suggestion for using it from a nickname is great one too, whoever mentioned that.
All of you that don’t like it for a girl: Is it because you want to use it for a boy or have already used it for a boy or know someone by that name? [name]Just[/name] curious.
I know a little guy named [name]Milo[/name]. He’s a student of my husband’s.
This is almost the exact comment I was going to make. I like [name]Milo[/name] on a boy a lot, but I don’t usually like boys’ names on girls. The [name]Gene[/name] [name]Kelly[/name] movie is very interesting, though, since that means there is some precedence for it, even if its fictional. Also, I love Milou, I think it’s adorable, but it does take away the long I sound that you like.
[name]Milo[/name] does tend to seem too boy-ish [name]IMO[/name]. I think you should definitely go with [name]Mila[/name]. When I see [name]Mila[/name], I only think of the long I pronunciation, not Meela at all.
No.
And I would pronounce [name]Mila[/name] with a long I
