Milou!

Hi berries!

I’ve become quite smitten with Milou over the past couple days, and I’m hoping you’ll indulge some questions :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Between Lilou, Milou, Cilou, and Philou, which is your favorite?
  2. Do you know of any other names that fit this pattern (I’m thinking a little more French feeling than Marilou or Emmylou)?
  3. What are your thoughts on Milou?
  4. What full names would you use for Milou, and does Amélie nn Milou seem like too much of a stretch? (I’ve also considered Emilia and Emmeline but I think I slightly prefer the idea of Amélie up front, so far anyway!)
  5. If not Milou, what is your favorite nn for Amélie that isn’t Millie, Mila, or Amy?

Thank you, berries!

Milou is lovely! :sparkling_heart:

  1. I prefer Lilou, although Milou is really cute! I love the repeating sounds in Lilou, it sounds on trend but not popular, and has a sweet, simple pronunciation (okay now it sounds like I’m trying to sell Lilou to you  enought of that)
  2. I’m sorry, but I don’t know any off of the top of my head! Some quick research produced Louna, Noemie, and Louane, so I hope you like at least one of them!
  3. My personal would be Emmylou, or as a nickname for any combo starting with M and having some form of Louise in the middle (ex. Matilda Louise, Marianne Lou, Mara Louanne). Amélie doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch for me, it’s honestly really cute and unexpected, I would have never though of that! however, the only “problem” that I see is that Milou has a pronounced oo sound at the end, which Amélie does not. Maybe pair her with a middle that has a strong oo noise just for the nickname to feel more intentional?

hope this helped!

edit to answer last question… which just seemed to have spawned? did I miss it last time? :joy:: My favorite nns for Amélie would be Lily/Lilly/Lillie, Mimi, Allie, or Ellie!

I love Mɪlou. It’s one of the names at the top of my list. I prefer it as a standalone name, not as a nickname for another name. All of my middle name ideas for Mɪlou are honour names (as that is what my mind has been on lately). My other option is to use Mɪlou in the middle name position. It all depends on which direction I choose to go when the time comes.

  1. My favorite is definitely [name_f]Lilou[/name_f]. Then again I’m not that used to the rest. They all sound cute though.
  2. Émilie, [name_f]Camille[/name_f].
  3. Makes the cutest nickname!
  4. I’d probably use [name_f]Camille[/name_f]. For [name_f]Amélie[/name_f] it’s a stretch but I guess not too much of a stretch?
  5. [name_f]Amie[/name_f], [name_f]Aime[/name_f], [name_m]Amour[/name_m]? Definitely more for a family nickname though. For everyone else I’d just stick with [name_f]Millie[/name_f].

  1. I am very torn between [name_f]Cilou[/name_f] and [name_f]Philou[/name_f]!
  2. [name_f]Malou[/name_f], [name_f]Nanou[/name_f] and [name_f]Zabou[/name_f] come to mind! There is also [name_f]Angelou[/name_f], even if it is not French.
  3. I find it really sweet and endearing in theory, but since I grew up reading comic albums in French, I always think of it as Tintin’s dog’s name first and foremost, haha. :smiling_face_with_tear:
  4. My personal choice would be [name_f]Milène[/name_f]. And [name_f]Milou[/name_f] for [name_f]Amélie[/name_f] is not traditional, but I do not think it is that much of a stretch!
  5. I knew someone who went by [name_u]Amé[/name_u] and always thought it was charming.

I love [name_f]Milou[/name_f]! [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] is one of my favourite girls names, and I think [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is really pretty too. [name_f]Philou[/name_f] is pretty but it reminds me of Petits Filous which are like little yoghurts for children. I used to have them in my school lunchbox. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, it’s just what comes to mind for me. Filou is like “rascal” in [name_f]French[/name_f], like a cutesy term for a naughty child

I’ve not heard of [name_f]Cilou[/name_f] before, I like the sound, I just prefer the other -lou names.

If you like [name_f]Milou[/name_f] there’s also [name_f]Malou[/name_f], which according to BtN is [name_m]Danish[/name_m] not [name_f]French[/name_f], but still fits the same pattern. I think you can potentially make up your own too, like diminutive/first syllable + lou is probably quite flexible

[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] “Milou” works perfectly in my opinion, but I am a huge fan of stretchy names (I don’t think this is that stretchy though).

[name_m]Other[/name_m] ideas for [name_f]Milou[/name_f]:

[name_f]Milena[/name_f]
[name_f]Milana[/name_f]
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Camille[/name_f] / [name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Mildred[/name_f]
[name_f]Ludmilla[/name_f]

I also think any M + Lou/Lu name would work with [name_f]Milou[/name_f]. For example (these might not be your style but just to demonstrate) [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Luella[/name_f] “Milou” or [name_f]Mira[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] “Milou”

[name_m]Other[/name_m] nicknames for [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]:

[name_m]Mel[/name_m]
[name_f]Mimi[/name_f] (I know an [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “Mimi” and I love it)
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] / [name_f]Lilou[/name_f]
[name_f]Elle[/name_f] / [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_m]Lee[/name_m] / [name_f]Leigh[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]

  1. That’s tough! I think if I had to choose, I’d order them in order of preference as: [name_f]Milou[/name_f], [name_f]Lilou[/name_f], [name_f]Philou[/name_f], and [name_f]Cilou[/name_f] – though [name_f]Milou[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] could swap depending on the day
  2. Similar feeling options: [name_m]Nalu[/name_m], [name_f]Lilise[/name_f], [name_f]Bijou[/name_f], [name_f]Louanne[/name_f], Rosamie, [name_f]Lieke[/name_f], [name_m]Manu[/name_m], [name_f]Marloes[/name_f] / Marlous, [name_f]Lieli[/name_f]
  3. I like [name_f]Milou[/name_f] – light, sweet, bright and stylish
  4. I think it could work for [name_f]Amélie[/name_f] – I really like it actually; they give me a similar feel and while it’s not the traditional Marie-Louise combo, the -ou does feel like it could be used like -ee, -a, -y, -ie are.
    [name_m]Other[/name_m] full names I might ponder: [name_f]Marilla[/name_f], [name_f]Marceline[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f], Amulet, [name_f]Mithian[/name_f] Luella…
  5. For [name_f]Amélie[/name_f], I also like [name_f]Mim[/name_f], [name_m]Mims[/name_m], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Mitzi[/name_f], and [name_f]Ami[/name_f] (like [name_f]Annie[/name_f] with an m)

count any repeat suggestions as seconds, please! :two_hearts:

  1. [name_f]Lilou[/name_f], but [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is a close second!
  2. maybe [name_f]Malou[/name_f], Filou (a variant of [name_f]Philou[/name_f] so maybe it doesn’t count ), Nilou (diminutive of [name_f]Niloufar[/name_f])
  3. i like it! i loveee [name_f]Marilou[/name_f], and [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is a super cute nickname.
  4. i would use [name_f]Marilou[/name_f] personally, but [name_f]Amélie[/name_f] works too! to me, [name_f]Milou[/name_f] feels versatile enough to work for pretty much anything as long as the sounds are there :person_shrugging: considering she can be a diminutive of Marie-Louise, you could also do something like that, with an M- first name and [name_f]Lou[/name_f]- middle name or second first name!
  5. varying degrees of stretchy—maybe [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Melly[/name_f] / [name_f]Mellie[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Mim[/name_f], Mimsy, [name_f]Ama[/name_f], [name_f]Ami[/name_f] (pn aw-mee, not like Amy), or [name_f]Alma[/name_f]

  1. My favourite is [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] I really like the repeated L sounds along with the meaning ‘Lily’ I’m a sucker for [name_f]Lily[/name_f] names my daughter is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] so of course am more drawn to [name_f]Lilou[/name_f].

  2. [name_f]Emilie[/name_f], [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Aimee[/name_f], [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Camille[/name_f], [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f] + [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f].

  3. I think [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is adorable I think she’d be such a sweet unusual choice and I would like her upfront.

  4. I think [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is a stretchy nickname for [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] maybe [name_f]Milena[/name_f] or [name_f]Milene[/name_f] would work instead.

  5. As a nickname for [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] I would use [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f] or [name_f]Amy[/name_f].

  1. [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is lovely but I really love the lyrical quality of [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] (and even more, Lylou)!
  2. [name_f]Ivalou[/name_f], [name_f]Marlou[/name_f], Mylou, [name_f]Nilou[/name_f], [name_f]Lilouenn[/name_f], Lilouna, Milouenn, Cilouenn, Philouenn
  3. I really like it! reminds me of [name_f]Mila[/name_f], which I also like, but more chic
  4. I really like [name_f]Amélie[/name_f] “Milou”! I also ran into an Améline in [name_f]France[/name_f], which you might like!
  5. hmm, perhaps Mélie (like [name_f]Zélie[/name_f]) or [name_f]Ama[/name_f]?

[name_f]Milou[/name_f] is cute! I knew of a [name_f]Nilou[/name_f] who went by Nily which also sounds really cute. Nice names.

Thank you, berries! Sorry it took me a while to get back to this one :joy::joy:

@silver.magnolia - haha, I do think I edited my OP after you commented! I can’t remember which question I added in but maybe it was that one. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is a super special name for me, I love the idea of it but prefer having a nn to pair with it and really don’t like [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], or [name_f]Mila[/name_f]. [name_m]The[/name_m] grief with [name_f]Millie[/name_f] is still too strong though and I never really liked the look, but it’s probably the best of the three. [name_f]Milou[/name_f] was a bit of an “ahha!” moment so I was wondering if I missed something else. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] but I think I prefer [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] and [name_f]Liliosa[/name_f] to get to her.

@shells15 - I tried finding a combo for just [name_f]Milou[/name_f] but was really struggling. Plus [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is a meaningful honor name (would honor my great grandma and a friend who passed way too early). [name_f]Milou[/name_f] doesn’t have the same significance on its own, and I don’t love [name_m]Mil[/name_m]- names in general so I found it hard to find anything I liked paired with just [name_f]Milou[/name_f]. Thank you for your thoughts!

@luneth - thanks, friend! I do like [name_f]Ama[/name_f] or [name_m]Amie[/name_m] (like the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for “friend”!), but they seem problematic at best, though I’m not sure why.

@Demoiselle - thank you! I am a massive fan of [name_f]Philou[/name_f], it’s probably my favorite, and I love the idea of [name_f]Philomena[/name_f] nn [name_f]Philou[/name_f]! But I’ve also been toying with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and somehow [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] nn [name_f]Milou[/name_f] makes [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] feel much more accessible? Amé is interesting!

@searose - thanks, lady! I can get why [name_f]Philou[/name_f] would feel less usable for you—I just think of it as an extension of “philos” and thus reminds me of love! I am very fond of [name_f]Philou[/name_f] admittedly, but [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is growing on me too! Especially as a nn for [name_f]Amelie[/name_f]. I know a [name_f]Milana[/name_f] so I’m not sure it or [name_f]Milena[/name_f] are usable, but they make tons of sense for [name_f]Milou[/name_f]. [name_f]Ludmila[/name_f] nn [name_f]Milou[/name_f] is inspired too! I feel like I have no reason to, but [name_f]Ludmila[/name_f] has been growing on me lately. I don’t really see anything but sharing the letters in common to connect [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lila[/name_f], but I do like the idea of [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lila[/name_f] in theory? :joy::joy:

@SparkleNinja18 - Améline is lovely! I think it or [name_f]Amelina[/name_f] used to be quite popular on here when I first joined Nameberry! I just don’t connect with it quite like [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Amélie[/name_f], but I feel like should like it lol. Never would’ve thought of [name_f]Ivalo[/name_f] or [name_f]Ivalou[/name_f] in the same group as [name_f]Milou[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilou[/name_f], but I do love [name_f]Ivalo[/name_f]!
