We are having our baby tomorrow and naming her after my husband’s grandmother, [name_f]Mina[/name_f]. She pronounced it [name_u]MIN[/name_u]-ah and we plan to pronounce it that way but I also see it’s pronounced Meenah. I am worried she will be correcting people on the pronunciation her whole life. Thoughts?
I would assume it’s pronounced Mee-na as it’s the only pronunciation I’ve seen associated with this spelling. I have seen it spelled [name_f]Minna[/name_f] with the pronunciation you want. Ultimately, there are worse things than having to correct people about the pronunciation of your name. I do it all the time don’t stress, focus on relaxing before your sweet girl comes TOMORROW! Good luck and I hope you have a smooth, safe delivery!
I would pronounce [name_f]Mina[/name_f] as MEE-nuh (rhymes with [name_f]Nina[/name_f]). If it were spelled [name_f]Minna[/name_f], I would immediately think [name_u]MIN[/name_u]-uh. However, I think [name_f]Mina[/name_f] could legitimately be MEE-nuh, MYE-nuh or [name_u]MIN[/name_u]-uh. If you want to ensure that it is pronounced [name_u]MIN[/name_u]-uh most of the time you might want to spell it [name_f]Minna[/name_f]. But I think it’s understandable if you want to keep the family spelling and pronunciation. You could tell people it’s like “winner” (or minnow).
I agree with both of the previous posters. I like [name_f]Mina[/name_f], but would have to be corrected as I would pronounce it Mee Nah.
I actually thought it was the way you say. [name_u]Min[/name_u] like minnie, and ahhh. [name_u]Min[/name_u] ah. It’s beautiful, congrats!
I say it “mean-uh”.
Totally agree with this!
I also love Minnow. Guilty pleasure of mine!
I would assume [name_f]Mina[/name_f] rhymed with [name_f]Tina[/name_f] and [name_f]Gina[/name_f]. I understand wanting to keep the family spelling, but I also think it will be irritating for her to go through life with all the mispronunciations.
I’d use [name_f]Minna[/name_f], personally. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name, either way.
Mee-na
Never heard [name_f]MY[/name_f]-nah.
