Minorly Offensive Names You Love (but can't use)

Have you ever found a beautiful name but were unable to admit that it was your favourite to other people because you’d seem like a racist/sadist/bigot/insert-unpleasant-name? Here you can share your love of tainted names with other people who appreciate that names should always be given a second chance.

I personally love [name]Columbine[/name]. It’s floral without being prissy, French without being frilly, a little [name]Catherine[/name] and a little [name]Lillian[/name]. And the upside is, no one else would have it!

Hm…well, it’s not racially offensive, but I love the name [name]Emilia[/name] [name]Nicole[/name] but I feel I’d never be able to use it as my cousin has two daughters, one is [name]Amelia[/name] and the other has the middle name [name]Nichola[/name].

well it is a bit drastic but you could emigrate to the UK and then [name]Columbine[/name] would be fine! What about Celandine instead?

I thought of the name [name]Mary[/name] [name]Columbine[/name] many years ago. It’s good that I didn’t name my daughter that. Place names can be a problem if a tragedy happens in that place.

I love the name [name]Jemima[/name], but would never use it because of the syrup.

[name]Love[/name] the name [name]Benedict[/name], but there’s [name]Benedict[/name] [name]Arnold[/name] who is an unpleasant memory.

[name]Barbie[/name] is a cute name that has been overdone by the doll.

It’s not one I wanted to use, but my [name]BIL[/name] and [name]SIL[/name] were considering [name]Myra[/name] at one point, but here in the UK it’s a HUGE no-no because of a child killer called [name]Myra[/name] Hindley. The crimes she committed (in the late 50s/early 60s), alongside a man called [name]Ian[/name] [name]Brady[/name], are some of the most horrific and notorious in UK history.

The fact a woman could be involved in such horrific crimes against children, it shocked a nation to its core, and although I and many others weren’t around at the time, we all know about the Moors Murderers, and in particular ‘evil [name]Myra[/name] Hindley’.

I would say [name]Myra[/name] is on a par with [name]Adolf[/name] here in the UK.

NB: Eventually my [name]BIL[/name] and [name]SIL[/name] accepted the name is unusable and scrubbed it off their list.

I love the name [name]Madeleine[/name], but in the UK it’s too evocative of a little girl who went missing. The same goes for the name [name]Holly[/name] - I loved this, but it was the name of one of two beautiful little girls who were murdered a few years ago (the other was [name]Jessica[/name], but somehow it didn’t stick in my mind as much), and now it would just feel wrong to use it. I suspect stats on both names have dipped massively in the last few years because of the tragic associations, especially since they’re to do with children.

I like the name [name]Jezebel[/name], but it has too bad of an association.

This is sort of different, but I love the name [name]Juliet[/name], except it was painful for me to read [name]Romeo[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name]. Did not like that play at all!

Yeah, I love the names [name]Desdemona[/name] ([name]Desi[/name]-cute nn) and [name]Ophelia[/name] (nn [name]Lia[/name]), but both of those have such tragic connotations as well, that I could never use them. Same goes for [name]Juliet[/name] as the pp mentioned.

I actually don’t worry about using [name]Juliet[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name], as they were both good persons at heart and that makes them worthy namesakes… I really really would want to use [name]Iago[/name] though, but EVERYONE thinks of the villain in [name]Othello[/name], and he wasn’t a worthy namesake you could say… It’s one of the few names [name]Shakespeare[/name] actually ruined by using [name]IMO[/name]… It’s so beautiful!

That’s funny b/c when I hear [name]Iago[/name] I think of the parrot on [name]Aladdin[/name]!

Anyway, I really like the name [name]Arian[/name]/Arien but when you say it aloud it sounds like [name]Aryan[/name], and I feel like a lot of people would take offense to it.

While I agree that [name]Columbine[/name] is a beautiful name, I would never be able to use it. I live in [name]Colorado[/name] and not 30 minutes away from [name]Columbine[/name] High School. The tragedy that happened there was beyond devastating, and a year ago there was an assembly for this one organization for the first girl that died, named [name]Rachel[/name]. It moved me to tears, and therefore could never use [name]Columbine[/name] (I know this wasn’t the point of the question, but I just felt like adding it).

Anyway, I could never use the name [name]Jude[/name] for a boy, no matter how much I love and adore it. I come from a Jewish background and have suffered through many horrible Jew jokes, and I could never inflict that upon my child. The name [name]Jude[/name] would just cause too much discrimination.

I love [name]Allegra[/name] but the allergy medication pretty much killed it for me. Maybe as a middle name.

I love the name Harlot. =[

I get a kick out of [name]Damian[/name] but I don’t think I could bring myself to use it.

My husband and I love Japanese names, however, neither of us have Japanese, let alone [name]Asian[/name], ancestry. We feel it may be disrespectful of the Japanese culture to try and use some of the names on our own children because we know how family and tradition are important values in Japan.

I think Heroine would be a pretty name (like [name]Hero[/name]) but can’t use because of the drug Heroin (Bummer).

[name]Katrina[/name] was once one of my favorites, but it became more taboo after the hurricane.

[name]Homer[/name]! I love the name, but Mr. [name]Simpson[/name] has tainted it!!

I love the name [name]Khadija[/name], but I am not Muslim. I have always feared that some might be offended since [name]Khadija[/name] was (I believe) [name]Muhammad[/name]'s wife and is important in Islamic history. Also, I’m not sure if DH would ever go for it even though I think it goes well with [name]Sonja[/name].

PS: little T.K.'s due date is in 1 week, so he could some any day now! (I am beyond excited, as are [name]Forrest[/name] & [name]Sonja[/name]. They can’t wait to meet their baby brother!) Gah…sorry, I couldn’t help mentioning. I’m just so excited to see my little boy.

i [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Arian[/name] for a boy, but obviously the hitler reference
also love [name]Ivory[/name], not sure if that would be percieved as racist?
