I may only be a teenberry but I can’t help but loving the name [name]Asia[/name]…I’m not an [name]Asian[/name] but my parents wouyld find it disrespectful because I have an [name]Asian[/name] aunt. SO I’m kinda always gonna be disappointed about that one.
Agree with all of the [name]Lolita[/name] comments.
I knew a girl called [name]India[/name] (after the Gone With the Wind character) and as far as I know she’s received nothing but compliments on it.
For a short time I was interested in [name]Venus[/name], until a friend pointed out what it rhymes with.
[name]Judas[/name] and [name]Lolita[/name]. Sigh.
Oh, and [name]China[/name]! [name]Love[/name] the sound, but…no.
I am with several other’s in loving [name]Lolita[/name], [name]Jemima[/name] and [name]India[/name].
I love Cécile and [name]Cecelia[/name] but they mean blind so I would rather not use them. I also love [name]Desdemona[/name] but I don’t like the meaning very much.
[name]Cohen[/name] - love it for a boy, but it’s considered disrespectful to jewish people.
This is slightly off-topic, but for those of you that like the name [name]Lolita[/name], what about [name]Adelita[/name]? I just discovered this name the other day and love its cheerful, lilting quality.
My friend and I used our “unusable” names when we adopted our chinchillas. She used [name]Iago[/name], a name she loved but the drawbacks of which have already been discussed here. I used [name]Kimiko[/name], which I think is lovely, but I didn’t think it would go over well for a little white girl.
For me it’s [name]Lucifer[/name]. I love everything about the name, except for the associations it has.
[name]Delilah[/name] (off limits because SO can’t get passed the Biblical and the song)
[name]Jezebel[/name] (again SO’s Biblical connection)
Síofra (nobody in my family can pronounce it)
I can’t use [name]Aria[/name] because I’m [name]German[/name]. Also I love the name [name]Jude[/name], but everyone would think it’s the [name]German[/name] word for Jew here, so that would be bad, too. I don’t think [name]Ariana[/name] is off limits though.
I always end up loving names like this, so I have a big list. Right now for a boy I really love the name [name]Alois[/name], but it was the name of Hitler’s abusive father and I can’t help but wonder how many people would know that. It’s also the name of a really crazy character in an anime I tend to think of.
I love, love, love the name [name]Jezebel[/name], but unfortunately I don’t think I would ever use it.
I adore Messalina, though I’ve only ever heard it associated with a very promiscuous, scheming [name]Roman[/name] empress. In that same vein is also Caligula, which is pretty much out of the question. My mother also ran into this problem with [name]Tiberius[/name] and decided against it.
[name]Jocasta[/name] and [name]Ophelia[/name] obviously have their problems, though I think they’re usable.
[name]Gaius[/name] and [name]Titus[/name] are both really different, strong names, but I think the first three letters of each could cause some problems at school.
[name]Hannibal[/name] is one of my favorites, but my entire family was horrified when I mentioned it due to the [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs connection.
And then, of course, because I read/watch a lot of true crime, there are a bunch of names that’ve been tainted for me due to their association with criminals: [name]Karla[/name], [name]Prentice[/name], [name]Skylar[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], etc.
Oh, and last but not least, [name]Lucifer[/name] and [name]Judas[/name]. [name]Love[/name] them a lot, but I was raised Catholic and I don’t think I could ever get past the connotations.
I also considered [name]Damien[/name] but the mother-son relationship that would imply would feel like asking for trouble.
My little sister named her doll Saliva once when she was four. We still make fun of her for it! But it does have a nice sound if you think about it…
[name]Benedict[/name] - I love this name, but I worry about the [name]Benedict[/name] [name]Arnold[/name] association.
[name]Delilah[/name] - Cute, but I can’t quite get past the [name]Samson[/name] and [name]Delilah[/name] image.
[name]Guinevere[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]. But do I want a child to be named after a famous adulteress?
It’s typically shortened to Yaz, so I think you can definitely still use [name]Yasmin[/name], or [name]Jasmine[/name], in the least.
I love [name]Benedict[/name] as well, but I would use it despite the [name]Benedict[/name] [name]Arnold[/name] association. I like what another member said about un-tabooing the name as part of the healing process. [name]Benedict[/name] is a lovely latin name with pious meaning.
About [name]Guinevere[/name], I like how the BBC’s fantasy series [name]Merlin[/name] portrays her fate. It’s on Netflix. I’ve always felt like she was in an impossible situation, and that it wasn’t wanton or premeditated. Weak moment I can believe. I know it’s completely fictional, but I don’t believe a person like [name]Arthur[/name] would marry someone with an unequal heart. I have long loved this name and its variants. I don’t think it goes with my last name, unfortunately, but I do hope it becomes more popular.
Probably the association with Islam, though I think it’s stupid. Islam is the largest religion in the world. Not all Muslims are violent. Anyone who knows anything about the religion sincerely practiced, shouldn’t be scared whatsoever. I’ll never understand why people dislike Mormons… their fundamental principles are about protecting the family from bad influences.
I love [name]Forest[/name]! But wouldn’t want to subject my little one to “Run, [name]Forest[/name], Run!” <- not offensive, but the movie ruined it!
