Mira

[name_f]Mira[/name_f] is a name that struck me recently. I personally do not like -[name_f]Belle[/name_f] names, but some part of me felt a certain pull towards [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f]… and then a few days ago, I found myself thinking of [name_f]Mira[/name_f] a lot and finding it a simple, international and even maybe exotic name (in the strong, good way).

While skyping with an American friend earlier today, I wrote her the name (I’m using it for a character I’m ellaborating) and she asked me how to pronounce it. MEE-ruh or MY-ruh. On nameberry it says the former, but since it’s for a character, I can’t help but wonder if it’s more “problematic” than I thought.

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce and perceive [name_f]MIRA[/name_f]?

BTW, character’s name is [name_f]Mira[/name_f] [name_f]Cayenne[/name_f].

Come on berries, help me out!

I pronounce it as MEER-uh. I like it - it’s sharp but smooth, and I prefer it to [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f], which feels very frilly to me. I also really like it as a nickname for [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], if that’s helpful.

It’s ok, but not my style

MEE-ra. The musical “Carnival!” has a song called “[name_f]Mira[/name_f]” and it’s pronounced that way.

I prefer the Mee-ruh pronounciation. I prefer [name_f]Mira[/name_f] to [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] as I too do not like the -belle names. It’s NMS but I can see it suiting the right person very well.

I pronounce it MEER-uh. I think it is simple and pretty, with a touch of the exotic. A very nice name. I actually know a [name_f]Mira[/name_f] (spelt [name_f]Meera[/name_f] though, after the [name_f]Indian[/name_f] poet), and she is absolutely drop dead stunning, very smart, funny, etc, so I have a pretty good impression of the name.

I’m from the US, and I would pronounce it My-ruh. I love the name. Was on my list until I found out my hubby had an ex named [name_f]Mira[/name_f].

Thanks you guys! @Nooshi, I’m going to look into that poet! Thanks for the reference!

I don’t like it because it means “look” in Spanish.

I really like [name_f]Mira[/name_f] (Meer-a) and I like [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] a lot as well. I know [name_f]Mira[/name_f] gets some flack, but I think it is lovely and I like the nickname [name_f]Miri[/name_f].

I pronounce it MEE-rah, because it’s a word in Spanish (it means “you look”) and it’s pronounced that way- not exactly, but close enough. I don’t know anything about this name, so I can’t tell you much more

I love [name_f]Mira[/name_f], it feels quirky, and somewhat princess-y to me. I love the astrological connection. Plus I don’t have the Spanish association, since we don’t really have a big Spanish population where I live. [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] is also stunning.
