[name]Do[/name] people feel like these are tough names to pronounce? We want to use this as a middle name, and I really like the name [name]Mireille[/name]. We are looking for something unique that is a variation of sorts on [name]Miranda[/name]. I want to simplify [name]Mireille[/name] as much as possible for American pronunciation of the French sound. Which variation works best: [name]Mirae[/name], Mirei, Mirai, [name]Mireil[/name]? Thanks!!
I much prefer the original spelling. All of these spellings are much more confusing to me than [name]Mireille[/name], granted, I took French in high school, but still, I don’t think it should be that hard for people to pronounce. Plus, how often will people have to read her middle name and say it? Not often.
I love [name]Mireille[/name], too, and [name]Miranda[/name] is lovely as well. Because you’re using [name]Mireille[/name] as a middle name, I don’t think pronunciation issues are as important as they’d be if you were using it as a first name. If you don’t mind correcting people the few times her full name is said aloud, I’d stick with [name]Mireille[/name]. It’s also very easy to pronounce when spelled phonetically (tell them in advance), so her name shouldn’t be butchered during graduation ceremonies.
Of your alternatives, I think [name]Mirae[/name] is least likely to cause pronunciation issues, but as [name]Lyndsay[/name] said, most of the alternatives you listed are more confusing than [name]Mireille[/name], which I don’t think is confusing at all.
Other alternatives:
[name]Mira[/name]
[name]Mirabel[/name]
[name]Mirabelle[/name]
[name]Mariel[/name]
[name]Marielle[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
Best wishes to you!
Mirie or [name]Mirae[/name]?
I think [name]Mirae[/name] is the easier of the two to pronounce (Mir-A?) But I love the suggestions of [name]Mirabelle[/name] and [name]Marielle[/name].
[name]Mireille[/name] is pronounced meer-AY, and she was hoping that spelling it [name]Mirae[/name] would make it easier to pronounce.
I think I am just bad a typing pronounciations!
In my head Mir-A is the same as Meer-Ay! But now that you type it that way, I think that’s a better way to type the pronounciation
You’re great at typing pronunciations! I didn’t see that you used a capital A!
thank u for the feedback! Those are all good suggestions. I hoped all those variations would be read as meer-AY/mee-[name]RAY[/name] but I can’t really find info on the first two. I think Mirai is Basque for miracle and Mirei is Provencal short for Mireio meaning worthy of admiration or something?? It also seems to mean future in Korean? Can’t find the pronunciations anywhere. But [name]Mireil[/name] is alternate spelling for [name]Mireille[/name], just more concise? We are pairing this with [name]Jalila[/name] (which is jah-[name]LEE[/name]-la) so I feel like the middle should have less syllables. I love [name]Mira[/name], but it’s too many ah sounds, and I get stuck on alot of the variations like [name]Miri[/name] where I love the sound but it meaning turns out to be something like “bitter”. I know day to day that shouldn’t matter, but to us it really does… [name]Mirae[/name] has all the lovely meanings attavhed to [name]Mira[/name]… And don’t you think people without a bachground in French will read [name]Mireille[/name] as MEER-ee-ill? Is there a way it make it less confusing that I missed? Thanks again!
Yes, I do think that people unfamiliar with French will mispronounce [name]Mireille[/name] as Meer-ee-ill. I was just thinking that because it’s a middle name, and people rarely address others aloud by their first and middle names, you wouldn’t mind the potential mispronunciation as much as you would if [name]Mireille[/name] was a first name.
I think I (and others) didn’t mention the other two variations as they were more confusing than Mirea. It seems like most posters think that Mirea is the best option you listed if not using [name]Mireille[/name]. I knew that your other two choices were pronounced as Meer-[name]RAY[/name], but it just wasn’t obvious at first (and I’m sure Mirai will be pronounced as Meer-EYE by most). Personally, if not using [name]Mireille[/name], I think Mirea is your best bet!
What about the [name]Mirelle[/name] version?
[name]Jalila[/name] Mirea is lovely.
Thank you! I thought jalila ‘meer-ay’ was pretty. But are you suggesting Mirea is best or [name]Mirae[/name]?
Is [name]Mirelle[/name] meer-[name]ELL[/name]? I took 3 years of French but barely remember. Plus I think that’s how people will say it… I like it a lot on its own, but a little less than mirae paired with jalila just because there is so much L sound overall. I should also say that we were considering extra middle names, and the one that I re[name]Ally[/name] love is [name]Carlen[/name], meaning little champion. But it adds more L sound to the mix. So thinking of:
[name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Mirae[/name]
[name]Jalila[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Carlen[/name]
[name]Carlen[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Mirae[/name]
While I think visually it looks a little strange to have all the names with the same number of letters, I am also inclined to keep the versions/spellings as simple as possible to balance out the extra number of names (it is a family tradition on my side to give extra middle names). I love [name]Mireille[/name] as well, but ive been writing it and saying it everywhere, and it is still challenging to spell, even for me, every time…
I know it’s a lot of restrictions, but I prefer something that doesn’t add any More L sounds to the mix which is why I didn’t go with mirelle or mirele…
Input appreciated!!
Oh, and also to complicate things further, my husband thinks it should be Mirei, just because it is chopping off the extra French sound u don’t use (he’s a surgeon), and I do not think I will be able to talk him into something which looks as fussy or fancy as [name]Mireille[/name]. Some of thr back up ideas we have agreed upon were [name]Zuri[/name], [name]Eden[/name], [name]Emery[/name], [name]Inez[/name], [name]Amani[/name], and [name]Amadi[/name]…
[name]Hi[/name] there! I apologize in advance for my confusion with the whole [name]Mirae[/name] issue. I was just saying that if you weren’t going to be using [name]Mireille[/name], I think [name]Mirae[/name] is your best bet for an alternative with the same sound. Mirei works too, but I’m thinking it may cause more pronunciation issues than [name]Mirae[/name]. ([name]Lorelei[/name], for example, is pronounced lor-el-eye.) You, of course, should use the variation your prefer!
I think three middle names are lovely, but that [name]Carlen[/name] is of a different style than [name]Jalila[/name] and [name]Mirae[/name]. Perhaps [name]Carlisle[/name] has that bit of exoticism needed? [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlisle[/name] [name]Mirae[/name]?
Because pronunciation is important (as it should be!), I thought I’d let you know that until I read your pronunciation, I thought [name]Jalila[/name] was Ja-lill-uh, and I’m guessing I won’t be the last one to make this mistake. I wanted to share this with you before you name your baby, in case this is a concern for you.
I really like [name]Inez[/name], [name]Emery[/name] and [name]Eden[/name], but worry about a baby [name]Zuri[/name] being mistaken for a [name]Suri[/name] (as in [name]Cruise[/name]). What about [name]Zara[/name]?
I totally agree with all of that… and the more I ruminated on Mirea, the more I thought I liked it so I wasn’t sure if you were suggesting something new… But great point about [name]Loralei[/name] - and for whatever reason every association I have with that name is not one I want for my daughter. While I like the idea of [name]Carlisle[/name], it would actually make me think of belinda and go-gos every time. I do agree that [name]Carlen[/name] does not exactly match the other names there, but as a middle I kind of like the contrast. French (ish), arabic, and gaelic (?) so long as it all sounds good together I find kind of appealing… hopefully not too cluttered or confusing.
I really appreciate the level of subtle detail that people are willing to consider here on nameberry.com though!! On all the other boards I have attempted to use, I don’t get past feedback which says don’t give a baby 5 names, so I did attempt to simplify the questions I was asking… We are actually going to give her 5 names (3 middle). We know her first name is [name]Paige[/name] for a grandmother who has passed. I am only working on the middles now. So, I also agree with the point about [name]Jalila[/name] getting mispronounced, but I felt okay with that one I think because the clarification is simpler. [name]Jalila[/name] is an established name, present in every naming source with the same meaning, and one which is easily googled with once pronunciation so I don’t have to feel like I am making it up. Also, it is sort of a twist on [name]Lila[/name] if people get it wrong, a name which I wouldn’t use because it is too common, but which I also find pleasant. [name]Mireille[/name] is so lovely, but I just thought it would be so much easier for people to make a complete mess out of it, spelling and pronunciation wise, because “eille” isn’t really a sound familiar to most americans… anyway. I digress.
And I also really liked the E and I names, but since the last name begins with an E I didn’t want to give the initials PEE or PIE, because having 3 middle names myself, I have learned that you usually end up getting to choose one at a time…
So… I think I just need the order…
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Carlen[/name]
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Mirae[/name]
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlen[/name]
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Jalila[/name]
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Mirae[/name]
?? - thanks!
[name]Paige[/name] is a darling first name! (I thought [name]Jalila[/name] was the first name, but now I see the whole picture.)
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Carlen[/name]: I wouldn’t put [name]Paige[/name] and [name]Jalila[/name] together, as the “j” sounds merge.
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Mirae[/name]: Ditto
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlen[/name]: I like this one…
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Jalila[/name]: I prefer the above option…
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Mirae[/name]: I still prefer the other one, as this one seems like two trendier/modern names paired together, followed by two exotic names, which makes the combo feel disjointed.
My pick: [name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlen[/name]
[name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Carlen[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] seems to flow best. Agree with the previous poster that [name]Paige[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] is not good, because they end and begin with the same “j” sound.
I’ve been thinking about the names, and for me (and I’m guessing others), what stands out isn’t that you’re using four names, but that the names just don’t “go” together stylistically. (I wasn’t going to say anything, but this is a board intended for name advice, and if I were selecting names for my baby, I’d want to know that others genuinely thought.) I say this not to be mean-spirited or difficult, but to just share something important before you name the baby, as opposed to after.
With [name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Carlin[/name], you’ve got English, a French variation, Arabic, Irish, modern/trendy ([name]Paige[/name] and [name]Carlin[/name]) and older/sophistaticed/exotic ([name]Jalila[/name] and [name]Mireille[/name]/Mirea). This, of course, may not bother you, but I thought I’d bring it up in case it does.
yes!! that is totally what i’m looking for here is the genuine reaction and real feedback!!! thank you for that. i’ve spent so much time running these names through my head that it all starts sounding like nonsense to me sometimes. i want to build a name that is truly outstanding, and welcome all feedback toward trying to meet goal.
and again, don’t disagree with your ideas, but any suggestions on changes? do you think you would have thought of [name]Jalila[/name] as arabic if I hadn’t brought it up? same thing with [name]Mirae[/name], does that make you think of french things if it is spelled that way?
i like [name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name], but it’s not my favorite because of the repeating ay ay sounds. i agree about ge/ja with paige jalila, but for some reason that one works better for me…
[name]Carlin[/name] makes me think of [name]George[/name], but [name]Carlan[/name] or [name]Carlen[/name] feel more like a crisp, modern, unique variation of [name]Caroline[/name]. [name]Carlen[/name], [name]Eden[/name], and [name]Emery[/name] were the names I wanted for a first before we went with [name]Paige[/name] (which I had initially planned for a middle). Jalia and [name]Jalila[/name] were pretty much the only 2 J names my husband and I agreed upon, and this is to honor my mother [name]Janice[/name] [name]Leigh[/name].
So, I guess the ones I am the most attached to are [name]Paige[/name] and [name]Jalila[/name]… but I hear what u r saying. thanks!
I’m glad you’re not upset! Okay. So, you want to stick with [name]Paige[/name] and [name]Jalilah[/name]. They’re different styles, of course, so I suppose you just need to decide if you want the other two names to be exotic like [name]Jalilah[/name] (and yes, I would have know its origin), or modern like [name]Paige[/name]?
[name]Mireille[/name] is so lovely, and even if you spell it Mirea, the sound is still very French.
[name]Jalila[/name] and [name]Mireille[/name] go together, and [name]Paige[/name] and [name]Carlen[/name] go together, but the exotic and the modern don’t mix. Of the three names, however, I think [name]Carlen[/name] is the worst offender when it comes to not fitting it.
What about other J names for [name]Janice[/name]?
[name]Jocelyn[/name] (also gives you the l from [name]Leigh[/name])
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Janelle[/name] (the elle for [name]Leigh[/name]'s initial)
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Janeane[/name]/[name]Janine[/name]
Jassamine
[name]Joelle[/name]
[name]Joley[/name]
[name]Jacinda[/name] (contains the Janic from [name]Janice[/name], and has [name]Jalila[/name]'s rhythm)
Other L names:
[name]Leah[/name]
[name]Liana[/name]
[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Liliana[/name]
[name]Linden[/name]
Other C choices:
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Celia[/name]
Celilia
[name]Camille[/name] (has the eel sound of [name]Jalila[/name])
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Carmen[/name]
[name]Cambrie[/name] (still trendy feel, but more exotic)
[name]Carlisle[/name] (ditto)
More P names:
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name] ([name]Nell[/name] or [name]Lena[/name])
[name]Paulina[/name]
[name]Poppy[/name]
[name]Philippa[/name]
M names other than [name]Mireille[/name]:
[name]Miranda[/name]
Merette
[name]Mae[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Marielle[/name]
[name]Marisa[/name]
[name]Maris[/name]
[name]Marisol[/name]
[name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Margot[/name]
[name]Margaux[/name]
[name]Do[/name] any of these appeal to you?
[name]Jacqueline[/name] also contains the name [name]Janice[/name] (scrambled, of course, but it’s all there!)…
[name]Jacqueline[/name] also contains the name [name]Janice[/name] (scrambled, of course, but it’s all there!). I also want to add that [name]Eden[/name] and [name]Emery[/name] ([name]Ellery[/name], too) would have worked better than [name]Carlen[/name], as they have that exotic touch.
[name]Eden[/name] [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Paige[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] or [name]Jalila[/name] [name]Paige[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Mirae[/name] would have worked well!
