I’m far from being at the point in my life to have children, but here are some girl name combos that I find both appealing and intriguing. I welcome comments, suggestions, etc.
[name]Mocha[/name] - I wouldn’t want to have the name of a drink, and… oh boy, you’re black, aren’t you? [name]Mahogany[/name] I can handle, [name]Ebony[/name] bothers me, but this is worse.
Jamilette - Arabic male + French female ending = not sold on this one.
[name]Nalani[/name] - A Hawaiian one I should start considering.
I think [name]Imani[/name] [name]Jasmine[/name] has a really pretty sound, does it bother you that the actress [name]Jasmine[/name] [name]Guy[/name] chose the name [name]Imani[/name] for her daughter? I think it’s really pretty anyhow
[name]Mocha[/name] does remind me of the drink (sorry!) but I love [name]Rose[/name], especially as a first name, how about [name]Rose[/name] [name]Nalani[/name], now that is gorgeous!
I’m not a fan of [name]Chayse[/name], but [name]Shea[/name] has a similar sound, I love [name]Shea[/name], what do you think? Or instead of [name]Amaya[/name], do you like [name]Amara[/name]? Or Jamelia instead of Jamilette?
A reaction of shock. Recently, my father mentioned having run into a black man named, or at least nicknamed, Sambo. He found that quite offensive, and I can’t say I don’t.
I guess I don’t get this form of black pride. I wouldn’t want to have a name meaning black if I were black, or yellow if I were [name]Asian[/name], or red if I were American [name]Indian[/name]. I’d group that with naming your kid Jew or Republican (yes, those are real).
Triplicate, I get what you mean… I don’t think you meant what you said to be offensive, right? But it did come across that way. Sometimes it’s very difficult to communicate on the internet because people who don’t know you read what you write and take it the wrong way. I try to always give people the benefit of the doubt in these situations, but I’m sure you can see how the statement “Oh boy, you’re black aren’t you?” would come across as offensive.
That said, I generally agree with you about not liking names that describe what race a person is. However, I love the name [name]Bianca[/name] which means white (and I’m white). I wouldn’t like to have the name [name]Mocha[/name], not because it’s a color, but because it’s such a popular beverage (similar to the issues with [name]Capucine[/name]). Though if it weren’t for that I think [name]Mocha[/name] would actually be a really pretty name. If you can get past the chocolate coffee connotations I think it’s a nice choice.
Beyond naming choices (that is your own personal opinion, whatever my thoughts on it are), what got me was the “oh boy you’re black aren’t you” comment, other posters have already adequately explained the reasons behind my reaction to your comment so I will not repeat them
However, just for your information, “Indians” in either sense of the term are not red and Asians are not yellow. Believe it or not, some Indians are even [name]Asian[/name].
And I think the point of the red/yellow comment is that those words have been used in the past to “describe” (in a racist/naive) way people from different ethnic groups. [name]African[/name] American’s are not [name]BLACK[/name], either, nor are white ppl WHITE.
Most posters are happily expecting children or just love discussing names. Perhaps this is not an appropriate forum to stomp around making uncomfortable statements about race.
