Is the name [name_f]Molly[/name_f] too tied to the drug to be usable? If I do decide to use it, I would spell it as [name_f]Mollie[/name_f], so it is less tied to the drug. I just don’t want people’s first thought when they hear [name_f]Molly[/name_f]/[name_f]Mollie[/name_f] to be “Oh, you named your kid after a drug…”. Thanks in advance!
No, [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is not too tied to the drug. It’s such a common name outside of the slang term, many people wouldn’t think about it.
My moms name is [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. just sayin. lol
No! [name_f]Molly[/name_f] would definitely be recognized as a legitimate name. I don’t think it is too tied to the drug at all.
For some reason, I personally feel the alternate spelling ([name_f]Mollie[/name_f]) would be more connected to the drug. Maybe because [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is an established, traditional name.
I’m so out of the loop, you’d think as a 20 year old I’d come across these things… what is [name_f]Molly[/name_f]? I have an Aunty named [name_f]Molly[/name_f] (it’s her nn for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]) and I’ve never thought of anything but her when I hear [name_f]Molly[/name_f].
[name_f]Edit[/name_f]: [name_m]Just[/name_m] googled… huh, I’ve never heard of that as a nickname for that drug before.
The drug? No, I don’t think so! I thought of [name_f]Molly[/name_f] Ringwald and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] McIntire, the doll! Plus, it’s a somewhat common name (as in, there probably wouldn’t be about three [name_f]Molly[/name_f]'s in one class, but it’s definitely recognizable.) I believe it’s very cute, and few people would actually think of a drug. Besides, didn’t someone name their kid Marijuana?
No, no, no. [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is not too tied to the drug.
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] (as a drug) is just the flavor of the week. It’ll soon be surpassed by something else, and regardless, I wouldn’t worry about it. You aren’t talking about naming your child marijuana or cocaine (both of which I’ve seen).
[name_f]Do[/name_f] I think it is a usable name? Yes
Is it too-tied to the drug… as someone in the mid twenties I do now heavily associate this name with the drug.
Maybe in childhood it would be fine but for the next generation I think the name would be hard to live down in highschool and university. Also, I wouldn’t want to open the door of “The drug and I share the same name… hmmm, lets experiment”.
Might not happen, but I could see a silly teenager thinking like this.
What? No, its definitely not a “drug” name. I’d be surprised if people even thought of drugs if you named your child [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. It’s not like you’re naming her [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
and drugs, not two things I associate.
I think [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is a great name for a dog, but way overused for people.
What about [name_f]Lolly[/name_f], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], [name_f]Holly[/name_f], or [name_f]Polly[/name_f]?
Or [name_f]Sally[/name_f]?
All of these have the advantage of having a substantial name to go with them ([name_f]Laurel[/name_f], [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f], [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], or [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]).
By the time this child is a teenager, [name_f]Molly[/name_f] will no longer be a thing.
I’m not expecting, I just love names. I’ve never even had a boyfriend.
My first thought was ‘what drug?’ So no I don’t think it’s too tied to the drug
I’m a 27-year-old [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and I don’t think it’s too tied to the drug. I think the biggest drawback is kind of the opposite of what someone wrote above - it’s too common for dogs but makes a nice person name! I’m the only (human) [name_f]Molly[/name_f] most of my friends know, and I’d say the biggest plus of the name is that it’s very friendly sounding. Most people have positive associations as soon as they hear it (and nobody, so far, has brought up the drug)!
I guess I’m the only one but it is a yes for me.
As a 30ish year old who goes to a lot of concerts because of a love of music, this name has been ruined for me because of the drug. Ultimately it being around depends on the genre of music I happen to be seeing, so don’t think I hear it at every show. If you say [name_f]Molly[/name_f] to my crowd of friends, that is what they’ll think of but that is again because we are exposed to it so often. When I first started frequenting shows 7 years ago, it was there. I remember turning to my boyfriend and asking why some guy walked by me and said “[name_f]Molly[/name_f] here”. So for me this name has been tied to the drug for 7 years.
I actually kind of think it is ruined. At least for me. I’ve gone to so many shows over the years and the term [name_f]Molly[/name_f] the drug is definitely popular. I don’t do the drug, but its everywhere when I go to certain types of concerts. The term [name_f]Molly[/name_f] has been around for probably almost a decade I’m guessing. I’ve known about it for about 6-7 years and its not going away anytime soon. I see it like another [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. That term has been around for probably 30 + years. The only difference is that marijuana is more mainstream than MDMA so some people haven’t heard of [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and it won’t become as popular as marijuana. I personally wouldn’t name a child [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] because the drug associations exists. I do hope I’m wrong and the term [name_f]Molly[/name_f] doesn’t stick around like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] because it really is a cute name. A good number of my friends will associate [name_f]Molly[/name_f] with the drug first unless they know a person or dog with the name. I know a dog with the name Molly so I think dog first, then drug, then possible name for a person.
These are the rankings of the name [name_f]Molly[/name_f] for the past 20 years. Either a majority of the population doesn’t know about the term or they just don’t care. Then again, I don’t think a majority of the population frequent places that molly/ecstasy would be available.

I don’t think it’s tied to the drug at all. I would be sure to spell it correctly ([name_f]Molly[/name_f]) as [name_f]Mollie[/name_f] isn’t great. My husband really liked this name, but it never made it to our short list because I thought it was too youthful and cutesy.
Best of luck!
I refuse to let the drug ruin it for me. [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is a very long standing beautiful name. Why let a small negative segment of the population ruin a name with so much history and longevity?
