When I was a baby, my mom was in and out of the hospital for some health problems. My aunt took care of me, and always jokingly said she was re-naming me “[name]Molly[/name]”. [name]Ever[/name] since I was told this story, I kind of fell in love with the Name [name]Molly[/name], middle name [name]Patricia[/name], after my aunt wo called me that(who is like a mother to me).
But apparently, [name]Molly[/name] is now a name of a drug! And because of this, I can’t decide if I give my future child this name any more. Is the meaning behind that name more powerful than the name of a now common drug? Would you do that to a child? I’m by no means pregnant, or planning to have in the next year or two, but It’s something I’ve been thinking about, and wanted your opinions!
The story is obviously meaningful, so what does it matter if it’s the name of a drug? I’ve never heard of it and would never even think of associating such a sweet name with a drug. Also, it’s quite classic. If there were a drug called, say, [name]Kate[/name], that wouldn’t hurt the name (I don’t think) because it’s well-used. [name]Molly[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] would be lovely. It has a fun, [name]Americana[/name] feel.
I adore [name]Molly[/name]! I also love names that have a sweet story attached to them. I have never heard of a drug named [name]Molly[/name]. I don’t think people are going to associated [name]Molly[/name] with a medicine. It has too much history and longevity.
[name]Molly[/name] is such a well-established name that I wouldn’t worry about any street drug connotation. (I am probably biased because my bf is [name]Molly[/name]…a person named [name]Molly[/name] I don’t even know which drug this refers to) The name came well before the negative drug culture connotation. If you love it, go with it. Best wishes!
The association with MDMA doesn’t bother me, if that helps to sway your opinion
And I don’t think the drug connection will be so prevalent down the line. So if you really like it and it seems as though you really do, go for it! [name]Molly[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] is a great combo too (much better than my own FN/MN combo).
My mom’s nn is [name]Molly[/name] and while I do have friend who will make a reference to the drug whenever she picks me up from school, it’s not something obvious. Also, a girl at my school named [name]Molly[/name] seems to get by without any teasing or references.
I think [name]Molly[/name] is a wonderful name! I just recently added it to my list as well. I think the fact that it has such sentimental value to you will trump any negative associations that it has. [name]Every[/name] name has a downside, and I had never heard that [name]Molly[/name] could be used for a drug, so it doesn’t seem like it would be that obvious of a downside. [name]Molly[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] is gorgeous and obviously special to you so I say go for it!
It’s a nice and established name already, so just because there’s a rather obscure negative association with it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it. Plus, it’s obviously very meaningful to you, and that’s reason enough to use it!
Personally, I love love love [name]Molly[/name] and it has been on my top ten (at least!) the last ten years or so. I love the meaning it has to you, and [name]Molly[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] is very sweet (you could nn her [name]Molly[/name] [name]Pat[/name] - adorable!:)) It’s definitely a keeper
After doing some googling, “[name]Molly[/name]” (the drug’s nickname) comes from molecule. [name]Molly[/name] as a name is lovely, classic, and something I can easily picture on a female of any age. If you love it, you shouldn’t let the drug’s nickname get in the way. Besides, it very well could have a different nickname by then.
I think I’ve met more people named [name]Molly[/name] than people who have tried [name]Molly[/name]…I think that means you’re fine. I don’t think MDMA is as much of a problem as meth or x or whatever. It’s such an established name it wouldn’t bother me.
I’m glad you started this post because I was wondering the same thing! [name]Molly[/name] is a family name and one of the few girl names hubby and I agree on, but the drug connotation makes me worry. Granted, I didn’t even know it was slang for mdma before reading [name]Molly[/name]'s nameberry page. Most people I asked have never heard of [name]Molly[/name] being used as drug name either. However, I am worried about the drug connotation catching on - for example, what do you think of when you hear the name [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]? Exactly. That said, we still haven’t ruled out [name]Molly[/name]. Its an adorable name. You could always use [name]Mary[/name] or [name]Margaret[/name] as a full name, will [name]Molly[/name] as a nickname. That way if the drug connotation becomes popular she could go by her full name.
[name]Molly[/name] is a wonderful name. While I personally prefer it as a nickname, with your background story I totally understand why you want to use it as a given name. I have never heard of it being used as a nickname for a drug, but I don’t go out much and I’m foreign so the chance of me knowing what it is basically is non-existing.
[name]Molly[/name] has been a slang term for MDMA for quite awhile now and people have been naming babies [name]Molly[/name] without any negative affects so far, so I think you’re pretty safe with it. It will never be as wildly known as [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name], for example.
[name]Molly[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] is lovely. I don’t think [name]Molly[/name] is a well-known drug reference at all, it obviously depends on your circles but it wouldn’t put me off using a beautiful name with meaning at all. And what’s to say that by the time [name]Molly[/name] hits high school the term will be outdated anyway?
That is a great story. [name]Molly[/name] [name]Patricia[/name] is a very down-to-earth but friendly name that I can see on a person of any age.
And I have never heard of the drug; I don’t think it will be most peoples’ first association.
