Molly?

From my initial post searching for a sister name for Brooks, Molly got the most love.

  1. Follow up question for the Mollys, friends and moms of Mollys: have you encountered jokes/references about it being a nickname for mdma? Is it bothersome or frequent enough that I should disqualify the name?

  2. Another top option is Mallory, which technically means “unfortunate or ill-fated.” How serious is it to have a negative connotation if the name itself is lovely?

  1. I used to go by [name_f]Molly[/name_f] as a nickname, in a university where marijuana use was definitely not uncommon, and no one ever made any comments! But it wouldn’t have really bothered me even if they did? It’s not like the name is connected to a negative attribute about you, just “ha ha weed” which is a childish and mostly inconsequential thing to have a laugh over. Plus, I think the name is too common to really be overwhelmed by any associations!

  3. I’m personally not superstitious, although I can imagine a [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] who is superstitious having an issue with her name’s meaning. But I will say that the average person has no[name_f][/name_f] idea what their name means at all! And while my name’s meaning isn’t as negative as Mallory’s I also don’t really like what it means, but that’s never bothered me especially. Meanings just don’t matter much to the majority of people, especially if your family isn’t especially superstitious.

I’ve known various Mollys [name_f][/name_f]- a number being school age now and some being my age [name_f][/name_f]- and from what I recall, no one mentioned the drug reference when I was younger and it isn’t something I’ve heard the teens I work with bring up either :person_shrugging:[name_f][/name_f] I’ve heard it on a few police-y/detective type shows and in songs, but no actually directed to any Mollys. I don’t know if it’s heard more elsewhere though (I’m in the UK)

I think it depends on how much you value meaning [name_f][/name_f]- over say, sound, other connotations, feel of the name. [name_m]Tristan[/name_m] is a fave of mine and can have a similar sad meaning, but it doesn’t bother me [name_f][/name_f]- plus, think about the popularity of [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Cameron[/name_m] :person_shrugging:[name_f][/name_f] If it does worry you, you could always pair it with a middle name to alter the meaning slightly. Like… [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] (gives you both: “journey away from misfortune” and “ill-fated and then blessed”), [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f] (“hope after being unfortunate”) [name_f][/name_f]- but a lot of people won’t know the meaning tbh

I’ve never heard anyone make jokes/references about the drug to someone named [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is such an established given name that it’s not a big issue.

I don’t think it’s a problem. [name_f]My[/name_f] own name has a negative meaning (“weary”) but I still love my name and have never been bothered by the meaning.

  1. I grew up with a [name_f]Molly[/name_f], and never heard any references to it. [name_f][/name_f] Plus, I can’t imagine people making the connection until she would be old enough to not worry about it? [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is so classic and familiar that I wouldn’t worry about it. [name_f][/name_f] If you’re concerned enough about it though, what about something like [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Molly[/name_f]?

  3. [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] is lovely! [name_f][/name_f] I have a middle with a not so great meaning (it means bitter), I’ve never loved its meaning, but I wouldn’t let it keep you from it if it is the one? [name_f][/name_f] There are lots of lovely names with not great meanings, that doesn’t really take away from their beauty for me. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Mallory[/name_f] became loved for a reason!

  1. I know two little Mollys, and I haven’t heard any issues with their name [name_f][/name_f] they’re both under 5 though. But it’s an adorable name that I would use on a heartbeat!

  3. I personally don’t have issues with unfortunate name meanings. Like it might be a bummer for them one day when they look it up, but I don’t think most people pay much attention to name meanings, even their own. I wouldn’t remember my name meaning if the meaning didn’t make a famous bookstore name when combined with my maiden name haha. I actually have no idea why my husband’s name means, come to think of it. Anyway, especially with a name as recognized as [name_f]Mallory[/name_f], people aren’t going to think of the name meaning at all. And the vast majority of people will have no idea what it means, nor will they even think to look it up! I say meaning doesn’t matter if you love the name

[name_f]My[/name_f] best friend from childhood was named [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and she never got comments about that.

I adore [name_f]Mallory[/name_f], she gets such a bad rap, but I think she’s severely underappreciated! I wouldn’t count it out because of the meaning at all.
