Monique

Husband and I both love the name [name_f]Monique[/name_f] but are worried that a. Our surname starts with M so we would be giving the kid an alliterative name and b. [name_f]Monique[/name_f] may be considered unfashionable.

What do you think? Is an alliterative name fine - especially if you have one? And is [name_f]Monique[/name_f] dated? Annoyingly it isn’t dated enough - very old fashioned names are super popular right now but not ones that peaked in the 1980s!

We don’t want a really popular name, but don’t want one the kid won’t like because it’s outdated either!

I have an alliterative name (CCC) and I love it. I think its fine as long as the 2 names sound good together.

As for [name_f]Monique[/name_f], yes it does have an 80s/90s association. Its very hard to know what a child will think of their name in the future, and they may come to appreciate that its different to their peers.

I personally prefer [name_f]Monica[/name_f] but if you both love the name then go for it.

I think alliterative names are fine.

[name_f]Monique[/name_f] is not too common,it’s [name_m]French[/name_m] and has many nickname alternatives.
I think it feels a bit dated, but at the same time it’s possible that a little girl could pull this off and make it feel fresh and sweet.
As for her disliking the name, it’s not easy to predict. I feel like nearly everyone at some point dislike their name, especially those with popular names. So therefore it’s a good thing it’s not overused

I actually like alliteration! In some cases it can sound fun, as long as the two names aren’t too similar.
[name_f]Monique[/name_f] feels a bit dated, yes. I would assume it was a woman in her 40’s. However it could work, since it has a modern and spunky nickname like [name_f]Nica[/name_f].
What do you like about the name? For example, if you like the [name_m]French[/name_m] and sleek vibe I’d recommend something along the lines of [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Nadine[/name_f], [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] etc.

I like it!
It’s a legitimate [name_m]French[/name_m] name, not something terribly dated like [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] or [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f].
Also lots of nickname potential if you would rather go that route.
Alliterative names are nice in my opinion. As long as they’re not silly sounding together ([name_f]Monique[/name_f] Moleek or something like that) I think they’re great.

I actually really like alliterative names, but the name [name_f]Monique[/name_f] is easily in my Top 5 of names that I cannot stand. I am [name_m]French[/name_m] and even in [name_f]France[/name_f], [name_f]Monique[/name_f] is considered to be an “old lady” name.

I immediately think of [name_f]Monique[/name_f] Lhuillier, the bridal fashion designer, so to me this is a classic, elegant choice, if a wee bit dated.

Not a fan. Would expect an ill-tempered woman in her 30s.

I don’t think alliteration is a problem at all! I would mostly focus on the flow or avoiding names that rhyme.

I love the name [name_f]Monique[/name_f]. I was very surprised to see that some find this name dated. The only Moniques I’ve ever met before have been around my own age, mid 20’s now. I’ve only ever met two! So it actually sounds fresh to me compared to [name_f]Monica[/name_f], which makes me think of Friends and other Monicas I know (all in their 40s-50s).

Good luck! Good pick!

Alliterative names can work! I would definitely not let that deter you.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] if [name_f]Monique[/name_f] peaked in the 80s it’s not common enough for most people to call it dated. I’m an 80s baby and have only known one or two in my lifetime. It’s kind of like [name_f]Sabine[/name_f] to me - could be considered dated in [name_m]German[/name_m]-speaking countries but not in English-speaking ones.

I think if you like [name_f]Monique[/name_f] you should use it. It’s not unfashionable.

I have negative associations with the name so my opinion may not be the best, but overall, it’s totally useable and I say go for it. Famous figure skater [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_m]Gold[/name_m] has an alliterative name and I think hers is beautiful! Alliterative names can be lovely sounding, as long as your surname isn’t too similar sounding to the name [name_f]Monique[/name_f], you should be as good as gold. You’ll have to be careful with the middle name though! I played around with the name [name_f]Monique[/name_f] for a bit, and some names seemed to clash, and only a few worked.
