I definitely think it could be either! I agree with @tallemaja’s point that people could easily get over the association, and that it functions a lot like [name_u]Max[/name_u] / [name_f]Bella[/name_f] / etc. I personally don’t know anyone of any species named [name_m]Monty[/name_m], so it seems like a blank slate to me! I don’t think it being a “dog name” needs to be a reason not to use it. However, if your husband doesn’t think he can move past the association to see it on his child then maybe it’s time to find a new name to love!

I would not name human [name_m]Monty[/name_m] or use as a nn. I do see it as more of an animal name. Heard it more on horses than dogs and cats though.

(not saying that will happen, just mentioning cause a lot of parents love the name [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] but teens can’t stand the name)
Idk. If husband isn’t that into it you should probably take that into consideration. Sometimes there’s more to just loving a name.

I associate it with @hannahhh’s dog, so it does have a certain “dog” feel about it, but I can see it on a human too!

Fully agree with this 
Monty is actually fairly popular where I am (rural central England) and I like it. It’s cute but has a bit of a quirky edge to it as well. A little bit retro, a little bit aristocratic, and definitely a fun choice!
I hadn’t thought of that until you said it, but it’s a good association in my book!
