So I’m due in [name_f]May[/name_f] with baby 2.
I have an [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] already. Something I’ve noticed that is SO unique about this pregnancy is that everything seems to be attached to the moon. All of my OB appointments I’ve gone to, I’ve seen the moon during the day while driving to or from the appointment. That’s like 4 or 5 different times. And not to make it weird but the night we did the baby dance that resulted in this baby, I noticed after happened to be a full moon.
So, I’m looking for moon names. I think it’s a boy…it’s weird but I’m not actually sure. The doc at my scan said one thing but the printout we were given says another and now I’m not sure
. The paper says boy and I assume that is the reliable thing since the tech who did the scan printed it, not the doc who I saw for 3 minutes lol. I can ask again later but for now I don’t know!
I know a few moon names…[name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]. But I’d love more because fitting those names as a sib set with my elegant [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] is kinda tough! We also live near the ocean, and the moon and water are so tightly connected I thought I could use that concept to broaden my possibilities. My husband is stuck on [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] for a boy and hasn’t given any indication for girl name preferences. His style is ULTRA TRADITIONAL (and Catholic). So keep that in mind?
[name_f]Selene[/name_f] and Jericho came to mind. Selene means moon and Jericho means city of the moon.
[name_u]Neil[/name_u] for [name_u]Neil[/name_u] [name_m]Armstrong[/name_m]? You could also look at the names of moons of other planets or other astronauts or astronomers.
I think one of the mathematicians involved in the moon landing was [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Maya[/name_f] or [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] sounds like it could be a sister to [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f].
[name_f]Moon[/name_f] Names:
[name_f]Aylin[/name_f] / [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f] / [name_f]Helene[/name_f] / [name_f]Helena[/name_f] / [name_f]Elena[/name_f] / [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] / [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] etc. – these have to do with light/glowing, which are qualities of the moon
[name_f]Selene[/name_f] / [name_f]Selena[/name_f] / [name_f]Selina[/name_f]
[name_f]Monday[/name_f]
[name_f]Moon[/name_f] (could make a cool middle name for either gender, especially with a more traditional first. [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] is an elegant and handsome name)
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]
[name_f]Livana[/name_f]
Lusine / [name_f]Lucine[/name_f] (with the nickname [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]?)
[name_u]Ocean[/name_u]:
[name_f]Maris[/name_f] / [name_f]Marina[/name_f] / [name_f]Marin[/name_f] / [name_f]Maren[/name_f] / [name_f]Marissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Oceane[/name_f] / [name_u]Ocean[/name_u]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]
[name_f]Mira[/name_f]
[name_m]Tide[/name_m]
Wave (or Waverly / Waverley)
[name_u]Blue[/name_u]
[name_f]Moana[/name_f]
[name_f]Naia[/name_f]
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u]
[name_f]Doris[/name_f]
[name_u]Kai[/name_u]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_m]Morrisey[/name_m]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_m]Marvin[/name_m]
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u]
Fisher
There aren’t many ultra traditional names that fit these meanings. However, I think you could pair one of these names as a middle name for a more traditional first name, which would also work well with [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]. I hope these suggestions help!
[name_f]Selene[/name_f] was the first name to come to mind (it means moon)
Seconding [name_u]Jericho[/name_u]. I think it fits well with [name_f]Anna[/name_f] plus it’s biblical.
Arche: the name of one of [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]'s moons. ([name_m]Archie[/name_m] would be a cute nickname)
[name_m]Buzz[/name_m]: after [name_m]Buzz[/name_m] Aldrin
[name_m]Titan[/name_m]: [name_m]Saturn[/name_m]'s largest moon
Or just [name_f]Moon[/name_f] which is very cute for a boy, but not so traditional.
[name_f]Jaci[/name_f]: native american word for moon
[name_f]Lucine[/name_f]: Armenian word for [name_f]Moon[/name_f] ([name_f]Lucy[/name_f] could be a cute, traditional nickname)
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]: [name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of the moon
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]: epithet of [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (Greek [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of the moon)
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]: Greek titan associated with the moon (also Biblical)
[name_f]Helene[/name_f]: name of one of [name_m]Saturn[/name_m]'s moons
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_u]Orion[/name_u] ([name_u]Orion[/name_u] is a star constellation)
[name_f]Celestia[/name_f] [name_f]Diane[/name_f] ([name_m]Roman[/name_m] goddess of the moon), or [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], or [name_f]Delores[/name_f] (to go along with [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]),
The [name_f]Star[/name_f] of the Sea is known as the Virgin [name_f]Mary[/name_f] which is translated from Latin which is [name_f]Stella[/name_f] [name_f]Maris[/name_f]
I was looking at all sorts of nature names, so these are on my list. Moon names are a bit more difficult. Capitalized names are those that are a bit more normal or traditional.
For a boy, I like Joseph Koray (reminds me of Ray); Joseph Atlas (which covers both moon and ocean); Joseph Lee; Joseph Bay; Joseph Kai and Joseph Orion (reminds me of Ryan or Brian).
For a girl, I like Carina Lee; Carina Kai; Carina Bay; Carina Maris; Carina Maristella; and Stella Maris.

Wow, I love your post.
I think there are more moon names for girls than boys, but my first thought for a boys’ name was [name_m]Endymion[/name_m], the beloved of the moon goddess [name_f]Selene[/name_f] in Greek mythology. I imagine that’s too unconventional and pagan for your husband to get on board with, haha. A few other ideas…
- [name_m]Marius[/name_m]: there’s a song in the musical adaptation of [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis where the character [name_m]Marius[/name_m] introduces himself to [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] and I always thought the lyrics were ‘my name is [name_m]Marius[/name_m], from the sea’ but they’re actually ‘my name is [name_m]Marius[/name_m] Pontmercy’ - I thought he was giving the meaning of his name lol, because I associated it with Latin mare meaning ‘the sea’. Apparently [name_m]Marius[/name_m] is more likely related to [name_u]Mars[/name_u], the name of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] god of war, or to Latin mas (genitive maris) ‘male’. I thought I’d mention it anyway because it’s more of a traditional [name_m]Christian[/name_m] name - sometimes used as a masculine form of [name_f]Maria[/name_f] - and I still think it’s a handsome ‘marine’/ocean name
- [name_m]Nereus[/name_m]: kind of rhymes w the above; ‘[d]erived from Greek neros meaning “water”. In Greek myth this was the name of a god of the sea, the father of the Nereids. It is mentioned briefly in the [name_m]New[/name_m] Testament, belonging to a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] in [name_m]Rome[/name_m]. This was also the name of a [name_m]Roman[/name_m] saint of the 1st century, a member of the army, who was martyred with his companion [name_m]Achilleus[/name_m] because they refused to execute Christians’ (source: Behind the Name)
- Crescens: another biblical name, reminds me of a crescent moon. The Italian form Crescenzo (kresh-SHEHN-tsoh) can be shortened to ‘[name_m]Enzo[/name_m]’
- [name_m]Havelock[/name_m]: English surname derived from the medieval name Havelok, which was derived from an Old Norse name which literally meant ‘sea sport’, composed of the Old Norse elements haf meaning ‘sea, ocean’ + leikr ‘play’; Havelok was also the name of the hero of a 13th-century Middle English romance, Havelok the [name_u]Dane[/name_u]
- Mariner: another surname name, since they’re popular rn
- [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
- Lear: ‘a mythical British king, immortalized by [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] in [name_m]King[/name_m] Lear, based on the account recorded by [name_m]Geoffrey[/name_m] of Monmouth in the 12th century. Lear is almost certainly a survival of the Celtic sea god, known in Welsh as [name_m]Llyr[/name_m] and Irish as Lir’ (source: [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m]’s Complete Book of Names). It comes from Common Celtic *liro- meaning ‘sea’ and ‘ocean’
Girls’ names…
- [name_f]Crescent[/name_f] or Crescenza: as with Crescens/Crescenzo I picture a crescent moon, and [name_f]Crescentia[/name_f] was the name of two saints; could be ‘[name_f]Senta[/name_f]’ or ‘Zenzi’ for short (nicknames used for Kreszenz and Kreszentia, which are [name_m]German[/name_m] forms of the Latin [name_f]Crescentia[/name_f])
- [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]: the name of the herb comes from Latin ros marinus meaning ‘dew of the sea’, possibly given because it grew near coasts. I love the nickname ‘[name_u]Romy[/name_u]’
- [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
- [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]: biblical name meaning ‘bright, pure’; this was originally the name of a [name_m]Titan[/name_m] associated with the moon in Greek myth, and it was also an epithet of her granddaughter, the moon goddess [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (source: Behind the Name)
- [name_f]Marisol[/name_f]: sounds like Spanish mar y sol ‘sea and sun’
- [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]: daughter of the sea god in Irish mythology
- [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]: daughter of [name_m]King[/name_m] Lear in [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]
- Arianrhod: a goddess of the moon in Welsh mythology. Her name is ‘popularly interpreted as meaning “silver wheel” and a reference to the moon. Caer Arianrhod is the Welsh name for the Milky [name_m]Way[/name_m].’ The first element is thought to be Welsh arian ‘silver’ - ‘[t]he Common Celtic word from which arian derived was *arganto-, and the “g” is preserved in the medieval name Argante — used by Layamon in the twelfth century epic poem Brut as the name of the [name_f]Queen[/name_f] of [name_f]Avalon[/name_f]. She is usually identified with [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] le [name_f]Fay[/name_f], and there are those who argue that the name derives from an older form of Arianrhod’ (source: Nook of Names blog). The related names [name_f]Arianwen[/name_f] and [name_f]Arianell[/name_f] belonged to Welsh saints
- [name_f]Tanith[/name_f]: Phoenician goddess of the moon, as well as love, fertility, and the stars; [name_f]Tanis[/name_f] is the Greek form of her name
- [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f]: ancient Greek name, comes from the name of the moon goddess [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
- Halimede: the name of a sea nymph in Greek mythology, which means ‘to think of the sea’
- [name_f]Meriel[/name_f] or [name_f]Muriel[/name_f]: you said your husband likes traditional lol. [name_f]Muriel[/name_f] is an ancient Celtic name, derived from the Common Celtic elements *mori- ‘sea’ + *gelwo– ‘yellow’ and ‘white’ (source: Nook of Names). [name_f]Meriall[/name_f] is another variation
- [name_f]Ondine[/name_f] or [name_f]Undine[/name_f]
I’ll stop there. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] there weren’t repeats and hope this gives you some ideas!
