Mora? Queston for a native or bilingual Spanish speaker!

We are thinking of using the name [name]Mora[/name] as a middle name for our daughter who is due very soon, first name [name]Jillian[/name]. [name]Mora[/name] means “raspberry/sweet berry/blackberry/berry” (depends on where I look it up) in Spanish. DH and I both speak Spanish, but we learned it all in school in the US so we don’t have a lot of practical experience with the language, outside of a few trips.

Is [name]Mora[/name] a name that is actually used in Spanish? Similar to how [name]Clementine[/name] or [name]Plum[/name] are in English? Or would it be really wierd? What does [name]Mora[/name] mean to you?

We want to use the name because we went on a trip to [name]Colombia[/name] and ate at a resturant called “[name]Mora[/name] [name]Mora[/name]” while we were in Bogota. I was very excited when I found [name]Mora[/name] listed in one of my name books. I think it is a nice name and has a nice memory for us of our very special trip.

Hello,
[name]Mora[/name] is all those berries. Depending on what spanish speaking country you go to. In Mexico they say Salsa [name]Mora[/name] for any jelly/preserves that is made of a dark berry like boysenberry and blackberry. Also purple in spanish is Morado, however in other countries purple is more often called Purpura or violetta. I have never heard a girl named [name]Mora[/name], but I don’t think it’s a bad name at all.

molly, looking forward to hearing the news of the arrival of your little one…esp. since i have a little jillian and can totally relate to all of the time you’ve put into thinking about her name! did you hang up your wooden jillian letters?

jillian mora sounds pretty, not a spanish speaker though.

Thanks! No, I haven’t put up the name in the nursery yet. I have lots of stuff to get done and it’s not the hightest priority right now. But if she doesn’t come in the next few days I should get it done soon.

I don’t know if I would use this name. In addition to meaning “blackberry”, it means [name]Moor[/name], which is a word with all kinds of connotations.

I usually hear [name]Moor[/name] as “Moro” (masculine). I think most Spanish people would automatically think of [name]Mora[/name] as blackberry, which is a nice connotation.

Yes, it means “berry” and it’s the female form of [name]Moor[/name]. It’s also a common last name in Venezuela and [name]Colombia[/name]. I know Moras from both countries. [name]Hope[/name] this helps!
