Been thinking about these two names lately [name_f][/name_f]- I love the idea of both but am struggling to “see” what they are like. [name_f][/name_f] What would you imagine an [name_m]Orion[/name_m] or a [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] to be like? [name_f][/name_f] And what nn would you use for each? [name_f][/name_f] Is [name_m]Rory[/name_m] too much of a stretch for either?
[name_m]Orion[/name_m] → outdoorsy and active, but gentle and warm-hearted, with a bit of creative/theatrical flair (tbh I am describing the one [name_m]Orion[/name_m] I’ve ever met :grin)
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] → quiet, clever, and serious [name_f][/name_f]- likely enjoys learning
[name_f][/name_f]
I think [name_m]Rory[/name_m] could work with [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- especially with the right middle/s? [name_f][/name_f] I do find it a bit stretchy, especially for [name_m]Orion[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- but maybe that’s just the way I say it with my accent?
I can’t say I envisage much for Orion either since I’ve never met or heard of one it’s still very abstract to me. I guess I’d imagine a boisterous kid who laughs loudly, loves to create games and make friends.
Mordecai feels a little reserved and quirky. I could imagine a kid who’s witty and enjoys finding unusual facts, music and other hidden gems.
I’m generally not a fan of Rory as a nickname for any name with an ‘or’ sound. It tends to feel unnatural and forced. Rory might work for Mordecai although you’d have to push against the more intuitive but similar Morrie and Mordy.
I’d find it more of a stretch for Orion sound-wise, but the modern vibes both names have makes Rory seem a better fit.
For Orion I might get away with Ira as a nickname with Ro or Norrie as alternatives.
For Mordecai, I’d probably go with Morrie or possibly Mack.
Mordecai is pronounced with a rough ch- sound (think Ross Geller saying Hanukkah), if that helps. Cai wouldn’t make sense unless you’d pronounce it like Chai, which means life and is unrelated to Mordecai but if that doesn’t bother you then it’s fine
Although to add, the vast majority of people are pronouncing it incorrectly so chances are they won’t even notice
Aww that seems lovely! [name_f][/name_f] tbh the only two Orions I’ve come across… [name_f][/name_f] one is a girl and one was quite a troublemaker when I knew him, so I’m surprised I like the idea of him, but it has special significance in my faith. [name_f][/name_f] I’ve been wondering if I could wrap my brain around what an [name_m]Orion[/name_m] could be like, and if I could find a nn I like, if he would feel more usable. [name_f][/name_f] It certainly helped for [name_f]Vera[/name_f] several years ago!
[name_f][/name_f]
I can see [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] as quiet, clever, serious, and a lover of learning. [name_f][/name_f] It seems like it should be right up my alley and I like the idea of it lately, but I’m having trouble seeing anyone but the biblical [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] I did consider [name_m]Ry[/name_m] for [name_m]Orion[/name_m], I think I liked [name_m]Ori[/name_m] or [name_m]Rory[/name_m] more, but I realize [name_m]Rory[/name_m] is probably a stretch for [name_m]Orion[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] Also probably what makes him feel most in reach, though, for me? [name_f][/name_f] Same with [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] but I do sort of like the idea of Dec or [name_m]Rex[/name_m] as a more stretchy nickname for him, too. [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Ori[/name_m] would work for him, too, I suppose.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]
I can understand that… [name_f][/name_f] I think part of my problem is that I envision him as the constellation and every time I try to envision myself with an [name_m]Orion[/name_m], I just get a blank. [name_f][/name_f] Hoping to eventually change that, though, because I have loved [name_m]Orion[/name_m] [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] for a long time and lately have been wishing he was on my list.
[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]
Not really, I was never into Friends. [name_f][/name_f] lol. [name_f][/name_f] So I’m not sure if you mean “ch” like teach or chair or [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] or more like the ch in [name_f]Chava[/name_f] or [name_f]Chana[/name_f] or even the “kh” Tanakh. [name_f][/name_f] I am a little familiar with Hebrew sounds, my best friend years ago was a [name_f]French[/name_f] Jew, and I’ve had a few good Jewish friends since. [name_f][/name_f] I’m not especially fond of the [name_m]Kai[/name_m] sound anyway, so don’t really feel drawn by Cai/Kai as a nickname for it. [name_f][/name_f] I do find [name_m]Rex[/name_m], [name_m]Mac[/name_m], [name_m]Ori[/name_m], [name_m]Rory[/name_m], etc. as appealing potential options, though.
I was trying to describe the Hebrew sound, yes. I guess you pronounce it correctly, then! Haha I was just imagining the way they say it on ‘Regular Show’ which my brother used to LOVE
Hahaha, I was thinking “she can’t possibly be trying to say it’s said like chai like chai tea is she?!” Admittedly I do say the ending like [name_m]Kai[/name_m], I’ve always said other Hebrew words or names like [name_f]Nechama[/name_f] (which I adore), [name_f]Chava[/name_f], [name_f]Chana[/name_f], Tanakh, even [name_m]Mordechai[/name_m], with the Hebrew “ch” sound, since [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] in [name_f]English[/name_f] doesn’t have the H, it never occurred to me to use the “ch” sound until your response. [name_f][/name_f] I wouldn’t use Kai/Cai as a nn either way… it’s just not me. [name_f][/name_f] I do appreciate the perspective and information though! [name_f][/name_f] In your experience, does anyone but other Jews say the “ch” sound?
