Hi everyone!
Just wondering, what would be the most common shortenings of Vanessa?
Would she be shortened immediately?
Is Ness avoidable?
Thank you so much!
Hi everyone!

Is Ness avoidable?

if i was to shorten [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], i’d go with [name_u]Vanny[/name_u], but i definitely wouldn’t nickname a [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] right away - it doesn’t feel like a name that lends itself to nicknames, to me. i think Ness is totally avoidable!
That’s great to know, thank you!
Not a fan of Ness so hope that’s avoidable.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Nesta[/name_u] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] though.
In Australia (where I am) Ness would be the default. But it’s more of a mum name, so I’d expect a Ness to be around my age (40). A young [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] would be more likely to be called the full [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] - which is lovely - unless she already goes by a different nn.
I’m planning on naming one of my daughters [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], I think Ness is an adorable nickname
I know a [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] and no one ever shortened her name. I think Ness is avoidable.
I would do [name_m]Vane[/name_m]
The two [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] I met were both [name_m]Vane[/name_m] (vah-NEH)
I would not instinctively shorten [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]- but if I has to, maybe [name_f]Essie[/name_f]?
I wouldn’t instinctively nickname a [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], but I might go with ‘Nessa’, as the easiest, flowing sound at first.
If I was to know her better, [name_f]Essie[/name_f] would be my favourite, or [name_f]Vanna[/name_f] - or even [name_f]Vivie[/name_f]? (but I think I’d only do that if she was my kid/my guinea pig - not another person?)
It’s not an instinctually nicknamed name, but the most common nickname I’ve encountered is just V / Vee. I do know a [name_u]Vanny[/name_u] but she uses that as her full name rather than an occasional nickname, if that makes sense. [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] or Ness also seems intuitive but I’ve never met one.
I know a [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] and sometimes her friends call her [name_m]Vane[/name_m], but everyone else just calls her [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]
I personally wouldn’t shorten it but [name_f]Nessa[/name_f] seems the most intuitive to me
Nessie/ Nessa/ Nesta/ Ness seem the most intuitive to me.
But I think [name_m]Vane[/name_m], V, [name_f]Essie[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f] etc could work too
[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] and friends tried to call me [name_u]Vanni[/name_u] and [name_f]Nessi[/name_f] -and I don’t like this at all. So, I just go by [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]. (I live in [name_u]Germany[/name_u] by the way.)
I’ve never heard of Ness for [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] and if I had a daughter named that I would probably call her [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] because I love that nickname.
[name_f]Nessa[/name_f] is the only nickname I’ve heard used for [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] in real life, but [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] does not always have or need a nickname. Ness is definitely avoidable.
It’s funny, I’ve only ever heard of Ness for [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], I LOVE Ness so much that I can’t see anything else working for [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] immediate thought was [name_f]Essie[/name_f], but Ness is probably most likely. I probably wouldn’t shorten [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Nessa[/name_f] definitely comes to mind first! [name_u]Van[/name_u] is second.
