Fathers’ surnames are passed down to children all of the time, but what about continuing the Mother’s family namesakes? [name]Do[/name] you have a useable maiden name, or your mother’s maiden name that you would pass down onto you child? If so, what is it and which sex would you use it for?
I named my daughter, [name]Harper[/name], my maiden name.
My mother’s maiden name was [name]Reed[/name]. I would totally use it for a boy.
My maiden name is [name]Adams[/name], so probably a little confusing at first when he would be introduced because [name]Adam[/name] is a very popular first name so people would just assume. My one grandmothers maiden name is [name]Parker[/name] which would blend into mainstream culture no problem. Most other names are very [name]German[/name] ([name]Wetzel[/name], Bierhaus that sort of thing) and I wouldnt saddle a child which those…middle names perhaps.
There is a tradition in my family that your first son is given a first name of your choice then your father’s name and then your maiden name, If my sister or I had been a boy we would have been [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] Atwell. I want to do this for one of my sons, but not my first.
Hmm wouldnt be able to use any of mine really my legal surname before i changed it was [name]Stone[/name], i was known at aschool as my step fathers surname [name]Shire[/name] and Savery is my mums maiden lol
I was named after my paternal grandmother’s maiden name, which I hate because it was a French word name. Not Irish, not English, a very rare surname with horrible pronounciation troubles. But, if it is easy enough to pronounce, I’d give it as a middle if I didn’t like, as a first if I was fond of it.
My surname isn’t useable by itself as a first name [name]IMO[/name] but I think I can modify it into a given name. Like [name]Williams[/name] (not my actual last name) into [name]Liam[/name] and [name]Willow[/name].
My mother’s maiden name was Berrum, and I couldn’t do that to a kid.
My surname wouldn’t really work, but my mother’s maiden name is [name]Dow[/name] and it’s my brother’s middle name: [name]Benjamin[/name] [name]Dow[/name]. [name]One[/name] of my uncles on my mother’s side is named [name]Eric[/name] [name]Boone[/name], and [name]Boone[/name] was his grandmother’s maiden name. And my father’s father has two middle names: [name]Arnold[/name] and [name]Nelson[/name], after the surnames of two important family friends.
I’m not married but when i do and take my husband’s name, I know i couldn’t use my maiden name as a fn It’s an 8 letter, very Italian surname…it’s patronymic so techically i could still use a part of it…which i may very well do.
My mother’s maiden name is Glim, but I don’t think I’d even use it as a mn…especially because my mom has a strained relationship with that side, so it wouldn’t really be honoring anything but negative connotations. Her mom’s maiden name is [name]Larkin[/name], which I would maybe consider for a mn for a boy. I don’t know how usuable those two are though…
I’ve thought about it but my maiden is Francois, easy for some to say terrible for others. =/ My married name is [name]Joseph[/name] so I’m sure if I did that he would be called [name]Joseph[/name] Francois not the other way around. That and we live in rural [name]KY[/name], so I know people wouldn’t say it right at all.
My maiden name was an Irish surname that doesn’t work as a first. None of my other family names work either (Vaillancourt, Levesque, Lafond, O’Bumsawin).
My maiden name isn’t usable as a fn but I gave it to my DD as a mn and will be giving it to my DS as a mn when he’s born as well. Trivia tidbit: did you know that in the show Magnum PI, the character of [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Sullivan[/name] Magnum got his middle name from his mother’s maiden name?
My maiden name is Connors - could use [name]Connor[/name] for a boy.
My mother’s maiden name is [name]Grace[/name] and is on our girl,s short list
My grandmother,s maiden name is [name]Power[/name]. I don’t think that would work lol
I could use my maiden name, IF I wanted my daughter to have an uber trendy sounding Irish McK---- name, which I don’t. It wouldn’t work for a boy at all.
My mothers maiden name wouldn’t have made a nice first name either, though it could be easily honoured with a name like [name]Piers[/name]/[name]Pierce[/name] or something, but not my style.
My Grandmothers maiden name, could be a cool occupational name for a boy, [name]Falkner[/name]/[name]Falconer[/name]/[name]Faulkner[/name], but again, not really my style.
I’ve actually seen my (soon to be) maiden name mentioned on here once or twice as a first name. It’s VERY odd to me because I’ve never heard of it as a first name. I think it would be weird as a first name, though you could use the nn [name]Parry[/name] (spelled that way because of my last name). My mom’s maiden name is a noun, and definitely not one I’d use as a name (think something in your house. Her sister’s married name is also a noun, something that’s part of a landscape). Other maiden names in my family aren’t really usable either (another spelling of a ketchup brand and a long, weird name I’m glad I don’t have, haha). The only last name I can think of anywhere in my family that would be usable is [name]Parker[/name], but it’s still NMS.
I love maiden names as first/middle names. I plan to use mine as a middle name for a boy or girl; my surname doesn’t quite work as a first name. I’ve got several family surnames on my list.
I just want to caution everyone posting your maiden names or your mother’s maiden name because those are popular security questions and you might not want the answers on the web.
My mom’s maiden name is the supposed Americanization of a [name]German[/name] surname that I can find no record of. Her mother’s maiden name is the name of a popular diet and her mother’s is [name]Phillips[/name]; [name]Phillip[/name] would make a use able fn but isn’t my style. My grandmother’s and great grandmother’s maiden names are completely use able but is on the same line as [name]Phillip[/name] not my style. As to my current surname, just no. It sounds similar to a given name and a brand of motorcycles but it would not work as a first name.
My maiden name was [name]George[/name], but I’m not a fan of it for a boy’s name so I may use [name]Georgia[/name] if I have a girl next And I’m due with a boy in [name]March[/name] and we chose [name]Sullivan[/name] because my husband’s family comes from [name]Cork[/name] county in [name]Ireland[/name] where it’s a popular surname (plus he’s due the day after St.[name]Patrick[/name]'s day!)
