We’re having a boy and would really love to start calling him by his name, but we keep going around in circles. There are some good names out there, but none that seem like the right name. I kind of want to start from scratch and see where that takes us.
We’re looking for mountainy names. Not “mountain man” names, as in someone who would live on or climb a mountain but names that bring mountainy images to mind. Crisp, fresh air, cool wind, snowy mountain peaks against a blue sky, pine trees with snow covered branches. Throw any name at me that comes to mind with that.
I think [name_u]Everett[/name_u] is a great example of this, but we’re not huge fans of it.
[name_u]Cedar[/name_u]
[name_m]Crispin[/name_m]
[name_m]Forrest[/name_m]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_m]Brooks[/name_m]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m] or [name_u]Ash[/name_u]
[name_m]Lyndon[/name_m]
[name_m]Aaron[/name_m] - means high mountain
[name_u]Elm[/name_u]
(I thought of this as a tribute to a GPA elmer)
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_m]Moss[/name_m]
Alder
[name_f]Cache[/name_f]
[name_u]Timber[/name_u]
[name_u]Canyon[/name_u]
[name_m]Ridge[/name_m]
[name_u]Reed[/name_u]
[name_m]Flint[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Cliff[/name_m]
The first name that came to mind when I saw your post was Summit! A relative of mine recently named her first baby boy Summit, and it fits him perfectly. It’s also quite rare.
Here are some more “earthy” boy names. These names are kind of all over the map in terms of style, but they have that wilderness vibe to me:
*[name_m]Abram[/name_m], [name_m]Abe[/name_m]
*[name_m]Cooper[/name_m]
*[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]
*[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
*[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
*[name_m]Huck[/name_m]
*[name_m]Jonas[/name_m]
*[name_m]Lewis[/name_m] (It makes me think of [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m], exploring the dense wilderness.)
*[name_u]Nile[/name_u]
*[name_m]Samson[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_u]Sam[/name_u]
*[name_m]Saul[/name_m]
*Summit
*[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
*[name_m]Wolf[/name_m]
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any of these?
Please be sure to post in Nameberry’s birth announcements after your little boy arrives. Good luck!
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! I know a sibset of [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], and [name_u]Everest[/name_u], and they are adorable.
Thanks, everyone! There are a lot of names here we’ve considered so this is definitely the right track.
From these suggestions, I like
[name_u]Roan[/name_u]
[name_u]Oakley[/name_u]/[name_u]Oak[/name_u] (one of our top choices)
[name_m]Birch[/name_m]
[name_m]Drake[/name_m] (another top choice)
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] (sometimes I love this but our last name ends in er and it doesn’t sound great. And sometimes I don’t like it that much anyway)
[name_m]Archer[/name_m] (the er in our last name doesn’t seem to be as much a problem with this)
My husband likes [name_m]Valor[/name_m] a lot but its a little over the top for me, even though I really like the sound.
[name_m]Brooks[/name_m] and [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] are quite good but wouldn’t work with our last name.
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u] is great, but I couldn’t pick a name with that “as” sound.
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u] was my first thought, but looks like you’re vetoing it…
I love [name_m]Birch[/name_m] for you.
I like [name_m]Valor[/name_m], but wouldn’t that be a problem with the -er last name? (Although my grandfather has first name -er and last name -er and I think his name sounds fine! Though, he does go by his first-syllable actually…)
[name_u]Roan[/name_u] is also another great choice, or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], which I love. And I like [name_u]Oakley[/name_u]/[name_u]Oak[/name_u].

I love [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]! My husband doesn’t. I haven’t run [name_u]Roan[/name_u] by him that I remember.
He’s also not a huge fan of [name_m]Birch[/name_m].
I think [name_u]Gray[/name_u] would maybe work but we have a baby [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] in the family. We only see each other a few times a year, and I don’t think they’re the type of people to think their name is “stolen” or anything, but I feel weird about it.
It seems like some er, er names work and some sound over repetitive or rhymey. We consider er names but we have to say them out loud a few times to see if it stands out.
[name_m]Mathias[/name_m] and [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] (just saw your Message against this, though) were the first two Names which sprung to mind as I read your initial message! Six others which also feel “Mountainy” to me are:
I like [name_m]Zane[/name_m] a lot but not enough to give it to my son.
Thanks! I actually have several extremely specific images in mind, but I thought that would be too hard for other people to work with. For example, I don’t like names that make me think of the Rockies and in my mind, the mountains look most like the ones filmed in [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings films haha.
