What do you guys think of the name [name_u]Murray[/name_u] for a little boy? To me it sounds cute and mischievous and also reminds me of the sea because of the meaning. [name_m]Just[/name_m] curious what other associations people may have with the name. The only association I can think of is [name_m]Bill[/name_m] [name_u]Murray[/name_u], which isn’t terrible but maybe not the first thing I’d want someone to think when they hear my child’s name. lol Positive and negative opinions welcome!
[name_f]TIA[/name_f]!
I really like it. Hidden gem!
I don’t really have any associations. [name_m]Bill[/name_m] [name_u]Murray[/name_u] would definitely not come to mind immediately for me, but he’s a cool guy
I absolutely love [name_u]Murray[/name_u] as a first name!
I like it. It actually brings to mind my cello teacher, since that is their last name. Definitely not a bad connotation, and I didn’t even think of [name_m]Bill[/name_m] [name_u]Murray[/name_u] until you said it. It’s a cute name, and one that he can grow into well. It’s also familiar enough that you won’t have pronunciation issues, but not something you hear everyday. I agree that it’s a hidden gem!
Thanks so much for the replies! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to hear the name has positive vibes.
Yes, I like it. It gets steady but not astronomical use as a first name in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f], as do a few other heritage surname names. I agree with a pp that if surnamey names are your style, this is a hidden gem that hits the trend without having any of the most prevalent elements of this type of name (e.g. -son, -den, -er endings).
[name_u]Murray[/name_u] sounds very cool and friendly to me, but not too trendy. [name_m]Bill[/name_m] [name_u]Murray[/name_u] did not come to mind immediately; [name_u]Murray[/name_u] just seems like a good fit with a lot of the Irish & Scottish names that people are naming their sons these days, but less used.
I really like [name_u]Murray[/name_u]. Where I live, its not uncommon as a first name, and very common as a surname (including for my step-dad!). I sounds really down to [name_f]Earth[/name_f] to me.
I think [name_u]Murray[/name_u] is cute. =] I’m a fan of the Outlander books, so the first thing I think of is the character [name_m]Ian[/name_m] [name_u]Murray[/name_u]. [name_m]Bill[/name_m] [name_u]Murray[/name_u] was the second association I made. Both are not bad, but the first is definitely better [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. haha Regardless, I think [name_u]Murray[/name_u] is a good choice.
I like [name_u]Murray[/name_u]! It feels very Scottish to me.
Thank you all for your wonderful replies! I agree that it does sound down-to-earth and it also sounds very Scottish, which I like. I’m in the U.S. and I do hear it as a surname but not much as a first name, even on older men.
Now to convince my SO of its coolness. lol I don’t think he hates it but I think he may not feel like it’s masculine enough. I guess because of [name_u]Murray[/name_u] sounding a bit like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]/[name_f]Marie[/name_f]. At least with an American accent. He didn’t say that but he tends to like hyper-masculine names like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and he didn’t really say anything when I mentioned [name_u]Murray[/name_u].
