Musical Character Names

I had a dream a few nights ago that gave me this amazing story idea. And of course I can’t figure out what the (bleep) to name all these characters, LOL!

This is a story of betrayal, loose morals, lessons learned, confession, redemption, and, ultimately, unity. (I’m kind of obsessed with unity/harmony.)

There is the Evil [name_f]Queen[/name_f], an unmarried woman who rules her kingdom in her own right. (In this story, the oldest child of the ruler inherits the throne, whether male or female.) She is primarily the “loose morals” bit of the above description. She has a passionate affair (if a single person can have an affair? Is that the right word?) with a lord from a neighboring kingdom, and conceives a child. The this queen is frivolous, and slightly dangerous. I haven’t entirely settled on her name, but am leaning heavily towards [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabella[/name_f], ruler of the Snapdragon Kingdom.

The lord from the neighboring kingdom is, at present, unnamed.

Their child, and the two children that the [name_f]Queen[/name_f] of the Snapdragon Kingdom has with a lord of her own kingdom, is who I’m terribly stuck with naming right now.

For some reason, I am really liking the thought of all three children having musical names.

The oldest is a girl. The middle child is a boy. And the youngest child is another girl.

The female musical names I’m toying with are [name_f]Capella[/name_f], [name_f]Minuet[/name_f], and possibly [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] for its operatic connection.

The male musical names… wow… not coming up with much that is grabbing me. [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and Ronen are the only male musical names I’m entertaining at the moment.

I’ve done searches and combed through lists and hit a thesaurus and can’t decide.

I want some strength to these names, of course, since they’re for a royal family.

Perhaps [name_u]Harmony[/name_u]. I could see that.

I don’t think [name_f]Melody[/name_f] will work. It just doesn’t feel right for this story or this family of characters.

[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]? It’s also an allergy medicine, though. (And, ironically, a medicine I’m allergic to, LOL, go figure!)

Oh, and [name_f]Cantata[/name_f] is also on my radar, but I’m also unsure of it.

What do y’all think?

Aoede or Aoide is a Greek name meaning “song” and in Greek mythology she was one of the three original muses, the muse of voice and song, and the daughter of [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] and Mnemosyne.

[name_f]Shadi[/name_f] is a male Arabic name meaning “singer” as well as a female Persian name meaning “happiness”.

Melpomene is also another mus ein Greek mythology, the muse of tragedy. Her name means “to sing, to elebrate with song”.

If you don’t like [name_f]Melody[/name_f] how about [name_f]Melodia[/name_f], from which [name_f]Melody[/name_f] is descended from?

Liron is a unisex Hebrew name meaning “my song”.

[name_f]Lark/name_f refers to the song bird.

[name_f]Cadence[/name_f]

[name_u]Piper[/name_u]

[name_f]Allegro[/name_f]

[name_u]Shir[/name_u] (u)

[name_m]Linus[/name_m] was a musician in Greek mythology, one of the sons of [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f].

[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] means “beautiful voice” and was the muse of eloquence and epic poetry, considered the chief of all muses by [name_m]Ovid[/name_m].

[name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] was a legendary musician in Greek mythology, able to charm any living thing (even stones) with his music. He tried to rescue his wife [name_f]Eurydice[/name_f] from Tartarus but failed.

Aika- a Japanese female name meaning “love song”

[name_f]Calandra[/name_f]

Eumelia is another Greek name that means “melody”

[name_f]Ligeia[/name_f]/Ligea is the name of a Siren; her name means “clear toned” or “shrill-whistling voice”

[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] or [name_u]Lyre[/name_u]

[name_f]Philomel[/name_f]/ [name_f]Philomela[/name_f]- means “sweet singer, nightingale”

Here’s the link to the names below. There’s quite a bit so you can pick and choose whichever catches your liking

You could do [name_u]Lyric[/name_u] and [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] if those names work for you, and I think [name_f]Melody[/name_f] would work nn [name_u]Mel[/name_u]. I also think [name_u]Harper[/name_u] would work, and so would [name_u]Piper[/name_u].

Oooh boy! Ok, wow! Lots of good names to contemplate!

I really can’t see using [name_f]Melody[/name_f] at all. Maybe because the name [name_f]Melody[/name_f] feels extremely 1980’s to me.

About the name [name_u]Piper[/name_u]… I’m also considering making these characters a fairy race. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Piper[/name_u] would work for a fairy [name_f]Princess[/name_f], or do you wind up thinking of the Charmed TV show?

If you don’t like [name_f]Melody[/name_f] you could probably do [name_u]Lyric[/name_u] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u], but if [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is too tied to the Charmed TV show you could probably just do [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] and [name_u]Lyric[/name_u] instead as well as [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] if that works.

Honestly, I don’t think [name_u]Piper[/name_u] would work well for a fairy princess only because I think a royal family would have more elegant, refined names and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] (which I think is an awesome name) doesn’t fit the bill. And though I watched Charmed when I was younger, I don’t immediately think of the character from the show.

I found another link to names with musical connotations:

Thanks, y’all! I seem to have a love/hate relationship with sibsets! Toying with a few, just to see how they look/sound together, oldest to youngest:
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], and [name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f], Ronen, and [name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Cappella[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], and [name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Cappella[/name_f], Ronen, and [name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Cappella[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], and [name_f]Minuet[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], if [name_f]Minuet[/name_f] is used for the youngest child)
[name_f]Cappella[/name_f], Ronen, and [name_f]Minuet[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f])

At this point, I think I’m leaning heavily towards the girls being [name_f]Minuet[/name_f] (the oldest) and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] (the youngest), and the boy being [name_u]Harper[/name_u]. Buuuut… [name_f]Cappella[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], and [name_f]Minuet[/name_f] does sound awfully good together.

I keep thinking about [name_u]Harmony[/name_u], and I think it might wind up being a little too obvious. Because bringing harmony to her own kingdom and healing some wrong-doings is what the oldest girl winds up doing. So maybe it would be like… naming a super hero Super [name_u]Hero[/name_u]. (If that makes sense!)

Also thinking about [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] as an allusion to the choir of angels. Is that too big of a stretch for the musical grouping of names?

Hrrm. Is [name_u]Reed[/name_u] too… un-princely?

[name_u]Reed[/name_u] could be the middle name of [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and I think [name_f]Minuet[/name_f] sounds good and so does [name_f]Capella[/name_f].

I think I’m going with [name_f]Cappella[/name_f], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], and [name_f]Minuet[/name_f].

And now, off to name a bunch of characters in supporting roles! (Or change my mind 10 more times, one or the other.)

I know you kinda decided but I just wanted to put forward some musical names.

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] - sounds regal to me and is a large violin.
Ocarina - a type of flute, very exotic sounding
Robero - a type of clarinet, would make an amazing boys name
Clarinet - or [name_f]Claire[/name_f]-[name_f]Annette[/name_f]
[name_f]Celesta[/name_f] - is a keyboard instrument
[name_u]Kora[/name_u] - a type of harp
[name_f]Mandolin[/name_f] - I think this one is cute
Sabar - a type of drum
Cornet - a type of trumpet

My picks for 3 royal/musical children would be [name_f]Viola[/name_f], Robero, and [name_f]Claire[/name_f]-[name_f]Annette[/name_f]. A little more unusual would be Ocarina, Sabar, and [name_f]Celesta[/name_f]

Ooooh, Ocarina! Such lovely choices!

Well… I am pretty set on what I picked… buuuut… maybe I’ll throw some more musically-named characters in to use a couple of those names! Thank you!

(And also, this story idea may or may not eat me alive. I’m bursting at the seams with ideas, and don’t know what to do first!)

Possibly back to the drawing board.

Considering including a fourth sibling.

I wasn’t feeling quite right about [name_u]Kora[/name_u] that kala_way suggested. Beautiful but not quite it. Poked around and found [name_f]Corisande[/name_f], a Greek name meaning “chorus singer.” It has the sound I like from [name_u]Kora[/name_u], and is still a musical name.

And I’m definitely toying with Robero, too.
