[name_f]My[/name_f] friend just found out she’s pregnant (!!!) and asked our circle of friends for names and I took it upon myself to find my future nephew the best name, lol, but I’d like your help! We’re muslim, so she’d like a Muslim name however, one that’s easy to pronounce in English since we are also Aussies. Since she doesn’t know the gender of the child yet, I’ve written both girl and boy names. If you could add some names I’d really appreciate it, also, which do you like?
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_m]Harris[/name_m]
[name_u]Jordan[/name_u]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u]
[name_m]Zane[/name_m]
[name_m]Chad[/name_m]
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] (pronounced [name_m]Kam[/name_m]-ah-run)
[name_m]Zachariah[/name_m]
[name_m]Omar[/name_m]
[name_m]Mikhail[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] (pronounced Ee-sa-ak)
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Adalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadiah[/name_f]
[name_f]Maryam[/name_f]
[name_f]Kira[/name_f]
Am I allowed to bump this?
I have a friend who named her daughter [name_f]Karina[/name_f]. It’s so pretty!
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Amira[/name_f] or [name_f]Layla[/name_f] for other girls’ suggestions? These are my 2 faves.
Sorry, but i dont have anything to add for boys’ names.
From your boys list though, i like: [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Zane[/name_m], [name_m]Adam[/name_m], and [name_m]Zachariah[/name_m].
Mohammed is pretty international, I met Muslims from different countries named Mohammed or its variations. If I remember right, it is a very important name for Muslims.
I suppose Elijah(Ilyas?) is a prophet in Islam. Ismail is nice but it is written like “it is mail”. Suleiman and Zakaria are another two I can think of.
For a girl Layla, Hava and Fatima were the first to pop in my head. Almira and Asiya are pretty.
Sorry if it wasn’t helpful, I am Christian and don’t know much about Muslim names
I used the name [name_f]Safiyya[/name_f] for my daughter. It’s pronounciation is similar to [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].
For other girl names, [name_f]Layla[/name_f] is beautiful and sounds familiar enough.
Boys name suggestions : [name_m]Omar[/name_m], [name_m]Adam[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u] and [name_m]Zane[/name_m].
I’m in Australia too. I know friends with names that vary from the easy to the difficult! An unfamiliar name can still be fine if it has an easy nickname (eg I know a boy [name_m]Samir[/name_m] who the kids at school call [name_u]Sam[/name_u]). [name_m]Mohammed[/name_m] is always appropriate but I know can cause some spelling difficulties for Australians so a second name for daily use is good. One of the prophets is always a good bet - particularly one shared with the [name_m]Christian[/name_m] faith so that it is familiar (eg [name_m]Adam[/name_m], [name_m]Enoch[/name_m]) trouble is with those that Christians spell differently ([name_m]Ismael[/name_m]/[name_m]Ishmael[/name_m] is a good example as the pronunciation is also different). I think you would have trouble with [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] as Australians pronounce it with a definite EYE sound. From those that are familiar to me I can suggest -
[name_m]Omar[/name_m]
[name_m]Samir[/name_m],
[name_u]Ali[/name_u]
[name_f]Do[/name_f] any of the following work culturally (I know they are prophets but I don’t know if the spelling is the same as English)
[name_u]Noah[/name_u]
[name_m]Moses[/name_m]
[name_m]Abraham[/name_m]/[name_m]Ibrahim[/name_m]?
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m]/[name_m]Daoud[/name_m]?
What about the name of an [name_u]Angel[/name_u]?
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
As for girls they seem easier - most Moslem girls names I have heard have been quite musical to my ear. I’m afraid though that though it may be a nice name with a good namesake the name [name_f]Fatima[/name_f] doesn’t really work with the Australian accent (which tends to emphasise the FAT-ima) also it is seen as a Catholic name here because of Our Lady of [name_f]Fatima[/name_f] (a name for the Virgin [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
[name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f] is very popular at the moment
[name_f]Maryam[/name_f] is beautiful
[name_f]Khadijah[/name_f] is great and easy to pronounce
Maha I heard this name on a young girl an thought it very pretty - her mother told me it meant [name_f]Gazelle[/name_f]
I’m sorry if any of these suggestions are inappropriate - I don’t know a lot about Islamic naming traditions. [name_f]My[/name_f] suggestion would be to go to the great blog (waltzing more than matilda) which recently posted the Australian top 100 names and go down and see if any of the names might share a nickname with a Moslem name, then you could have the best of both worlds - a culturally appropriate name and also a name that can fit in seamlessly when wanted (eg on the footy field!)
Good luck.
A Muslim family friend named her kids [name_u]Cameron[/name_u], [name_m]Qasim[/name_m], [name_m]Esa[/name_m], [name_f]Alia[/name_f] & [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]. All beautiful names and all easy to pronounce.
I think all the names on your lists are quite easy to pronounce, but I’m British so I don’t know if the same would be true in an Australian accent. I love [name_m]Adam[/name_m] & [name_f]Ariana[/name_f].
