So, last time I was here, my boyfriend and I came up through the responses here with the names [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Sloane[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] for our daughter.
Well, our daughter is now 1 week old (she was born 3 weeks early) and neither of those names seem to fit her.
We thought for sure she would be a [name]Josie[/name]. But, once we held her and started calling her [name]Josie[/name] - it didn’t fit. It felt a little too cutesy for her. She looks exactly like I did when I was a baby, so my mom suggested using my first name [name]Ann[/name], and calling her [name]Annie[/name]. But, I think that’s just weird.
My boyfriend, [name]Ryan[/name], keeps saying she looks like an [name]Annie[/name] (well, duh) but I just don’t feel comfortable using it. He agreed to me coming on here and asking for some help.
It seems like a nicknamey type name would fit her. Any name that’s similar to [name]Annie[/name], but not [name]Annie[/name] and has a more formal name with it would be really helpful. Thank you in advance.
Speaking as a fellow [name]Ann[/name], I’d have loved a longer “formal” name…hmm, what comes to mind…
Maragret nn [name]Maggie[/name]/[name]Maisie[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] nn [name]Ellie[/name]/[name]Nora[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name] nn [name]Hattie[/name]
[name]Dorothea[/name] nn [name]Thea[/name]/[name]Dory[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name]/[name]Carly[/name]
[name]Frances[/name] nn [name]Fritzie[/name], [name]Frannie[/name] or [name]Francie[/name]
[name]Francesca[/name]… ditto on the nn’s
[name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Lottie[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Lizzie[/name] (I know you may have nixed this already)
[name]Jane[/name] (no nickname but I think it is nice just like [name]Annie[/name])
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Louise[/name] nn [name]Lulu[/name]
[name]Angel[/name]
[name]Angelica[/name]
[name]Angelina[/name] - another nn for this is [name]Lina[/name]
[name]Annabel[/name] - another nn for this is [name]Belle[/name]
[name]Anneliese[/name]
[name]Annika[/name]
All of the above could have the nn [name]Anna[/name]. Or you could name her [name]Anna[/name]. My favorite is either [name]Annabel[/name] or [name]Annika[/name]
other ideas
[name]Antonia[/name] nn [name]Nina[/name]
[name]Audra[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name] nn [name]Rory[/name]
I’m really in love with the name [name]Olivia[/name] right now. It is very popular but it’s great because it has so many nn’s: [name]Livia[/name], [name]Livvy[/name], [name]Liv[/name], [name]Ollie[/name], and [name]Olive[/name]. Wow! So versatile. Your daughter would have so many choices as she gets older.
It sounds like you like the idea of [name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Josie[/name] but [name]Josie[/name] is too cutesy of a nn? So we need other semi formal names with nn that aren’t too cutesy. [name]How[/name] about:
[name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Joey[/name] (if it’s the [name]Josie[/name] nn that you don’t like)
[name]Miranda[/name] nn [name]Mira[/name]/[name]Miri[/name]
[name]Allegra[/name] nn [name]Ally[/name] (I know it’s an allergy medication now but I still really like it)
[name]Danica[/name] nn [name]Dani[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name]
[name]Therese[/name] nn [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessa[/name]
[name]Julianna[/name] nn [name]Jules[/name]/[name]Julie[/name]
[name]Eve[/name] or [name]Eva[/name] nn [name]Evie[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name] nn [name]Tibby[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name] nn [name]Cora[/name]/[name]Delia[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] nn [name]Vivi[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] nn [name]Nora[/name]
[name]Jessamine[/name] nn [name]Jess[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Maisy[/name]
I really like [name]Josephine[/name]…is it maybe that [name]Josie[/name] just isn’t working for her right now? [name]How[/name] about [name]Jo[/name]?
I like USING a nn, but also having a full name to fall back on…
Here’s some other ideas:
I really like [name]Lettie[/name]. Hmm… I’m going to have to bring that up to my BF. And [name]Sasha[/name].
[name]EDIT[/name]: Brought up [name]Lettie[/name] to my BF. He loves it too. She really looks like a [name]Lettie[/name]. God, thank you so, so, so much! Now we just have to decide on the long form.
[name]Elettra[/name] or [name]Scarlett[/name] or [name]Violetta[/name] ?

What middle name are you going with and what’s the last name sound like? Those both could influence which to pick.
I think [name]Scarlett[/name] is my favorite one.
I’m not sure [name]Eletta[/name] has enough Oompf and [name]Violetta[/name] could have pronounciation problems. ([name]VI[/name]-oletta or VE-oletta)
