My Boy's List... Opinions needed!

Hello everyone. I would love some help sorting through these boys names. [name]Feel[/name] free to let me know what you think. I’m down for constructive criticism but no rude comments please!!

[name]Fleet[/name]- love the ship imagery and how it sounds with [name]Pilot[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name]. Hate that it’s associated with an enema.
[name]Ludo[/name]- love everything about this name (especially the Labyrinth character), I can’t settle on it but I also have a hard time getting rid of it.
[name]Omri[/name]- like the sound of this name but it’s probably the last on my list
[name]Revel[/name]- Another name I can’t seem to get rid of. [name]Love[/name] the meaning and how it sounds with my boys.
Vox- This is my favorite of the bunch. For those of you wondering this means “voice” in Latin. Which has a huge meaning to my family and I. My only concern is [name]Dex[/name] and Vox. [name]Dexter[/name] goes by [name]Dexter[/name] the majority of the time. [name]Pilot[/name] is the only person that calls him [name]Dex[/name]. But I’m worried that when he’s older he’ll want to go by [name]Dex[/name]. WDYT of this? Big deal or no?

mns
Grimm- This is my hubby’s late grandmother’s maiden name. If you see it, it’s not because I just like Brothers Grimm but it’s to honor her.
Venture- My favorite middle.

combos I’m dreaming of…

[name]Fleet[/name] [name]Oswald[/name]
[name]Fleet[/name] Venture
[name]Ludo[/name] [name]Fleet[/name]
[name]Ludo[/name] Grimm
[name]Ludo[/name] Venture
[name]Ludo[/name] Vox
[name]Omri[/name] Grimm
[name]Omri[/name] Venture
[name]Revel[/name] Grimm
[name]Revel[/name] Vox
Vox Venture - my favorite.

So… WDYT?

First of all, I absolutely love your naming style! It’s given me some ideas and encouraged me to be a little more ballsy next time. So, I’ll try to help…

[name]Fleet[/name] - I like the sound of this, but I can’t get the image of a fleet of warships out of my head so it’s not my favorite from your list but it would sound great with [name]Pilot[/name].

[name]Ludo[/name] - I’ve always loved this name, we had a dog named [name]Ludo[/name] a few years ago. It would be awesome to meet a real little kid with this name, but I would be prepared for people knowing what the name comes from. Anybody that knows the movie well will make the connection instantly. Have you considered [name]Jareth[/name]?

[name]Omri[/name] - I like this one too, really cool and modern sound.

[name]Revel[/name] - I love this one, especially with brothers [name]Pilot[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name]. The nn Rev is awesome! It’s masculine and unusual, just like your son’s names.

Vox - [name]How[/name] cool is this? Fits right in with the new X craze, has a cool meaning… [name]Love[/name] it. I don’t think Vox and [name]Dex[/name] are too close, especially if he goes by [name]Dexter[/name] mostly.

Combos I love…

Vox Venture (Awesome!)
[name]Revel[/name] Vox
[name]Omri[/name] Venture
[name]Revel[/name] Venture (too cool for words)

[name]Do[/name] you have any others you were considering? [name]Just[/name] out of curiosity, I might have to steal some of them!

Some lovely names here!

I’ve got to say, the maritime / space geek in me adores [name]Fleet[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though it’s not traditionally used as a name, it sounds like a name. Other names in that vein worth considering: [name]Navy[/name], Hatch, [name]Anchor[/name], [name]Bailer[/name], Compass, Barque/Bark, Wherry.

[name]Ludo[/name] is also great! I’ve only heard it as a shortened form for the named [name]Ludovic[/name]. [name]How[/name] do you feel about that? It’s the name of a character in a film called Ma Vie en [name]Rose[/name]/My Life in [name]Pink[/name] done in Belgium. The main character, whose a transgender girl, her birth name was [name]Ludo[/name], so something to think about it. I doubt anyone would ever make the association, though? I was just obssessed with the movie for a period of my life. It’s a very strong, handsome, classic name, especially the full. Between [name]Ludo[/name] and [name]Fleet[/name], [name]Ludo[/name] is definitely safer

I like [name]Revel[/name]. Also Revelry. It does sound like a lot, though? Like, it’s meaning is much more straightforward and less open to interpretation than the name of one of your other sons, [name]Pilot[/name], and even more so than [name]Fleet[/name], too? It also matches too much with the idea of boyhood and childhood? Sounds like the name of a rock star, too. [name]Revel[/name] Vox! I would assume it was a stage name were I ever to see it, so that’s cool.

[name]Omri[/name] is sweet and lovely, but if it’s the lowest on your list, might as well say good bye to it? I love it. It’s a beautiful sounding name.

Vox is cool, though for some reason it strikes me as feminine! I have no valid reasons for that; I just imagine a funky, artsy girl named Vox. The other Latin/Greek short “x” names strike me the same way, but are worth thinking about: [name]Nyx[/name], Nox.

I don’t think [name]Dex[/name] and Vox is something you really have to worry about at all. No big deal.

Grimm is an awesome middle name. I think it would work as a first, too.

[name]Fleet[/name] [name]Oswald[/name], I like it, but it’s a tad hard to say because of the way the consonants and the emphases line up. My favourite combo is [name]Ludo[/name] [name]Fleet[/name].

I love the imaginative post-modern quality of these names…

[name]Fleet[/name]: I’d put aside any enema associations. The subset of people engaging in this practice is probably not going to run across your son. My first thought was actually fleet-footed, as in someone who’s able to run really fast. I didn’t even think of a fleet of ships until you mentioned it, but that’s really cool. I prefer it to [name]Flynn[/name], which is gaining traction but always reminds me of someone slurring [name]Finn[/name].

[name]Ludo[/name]. This one’s my least favorite and the only reason I can come up with is I once had a friend who called himself Lupo, which I think is Spanish for wolf. It’s also evocative of Luduvine. I have no idea if little girls in [name]France[/name] with this name are nn’d [name]Ludo[/name], though.

[name]Omri[/name]. It sounds a bit like a compact car. I’m sure I’m mixing it up, though. Is this pronounced Ome-ree or Ahm-ree? I think this one could totally grow on me.

[name]Revel[/name]. Probably my favorite with your sibset, but only because of the [name]Dex[/name]/Vox conundrum. Also, love the nn of Rev. I have a friend [name]Rebel[/name], who goes by [name]Reb[/name]. I’ve always liked that a lot as well. (He was born [name]Robert[/name], son of a minister, and changed his name at 18 to [name]Rebel[/name]).

Vox. Awesome, but makes me like [name]Dex[/name]/[name]Dexter[/name] a whole lot less, probably not an effect you’d like if my response was a general one.

Venture in the middle: !!! Totally awesome.

Grimm in the middle. I guess I only like it after the Grimm Brothers. I prefer that to the family connection.

[name]Oswald[/name]. [name]Lee[/name] [name]Harvey[/name]. But I still like it.

Thanks for stretching our minds!

[name]Revel[/name] Venture is handsome.
[name]Omri[/name] Grimm lovely but, too ominous…?

And I think you are right, [name]Fleet[/name] fits the best with the boys. [name]Don[/name]'t worry too much on the medical associations.

@thrallamanda89–First, let me say that though I’m still not a huge fan of your girl’s combo, [name]Finch[/name] is really growing on me. I’m coming at it from a literary perspective. I’m a huge fan (who isn’t?) of TKAM, but I’ve never been a fan of the rat-a-tat sound of [name]Atticus[/name] or the (to my ear) too brief [name]Scout[/name]. Now I’m thinking, “Why has no one ever thought to use [name]Finch[/name] as a nod to both the fictional father and daughter?”

I’ll also say, that though your naming style is very different than mine, I’m enjoying your threads. Your style leaves “scope for the imagination,” as [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables would say.

Now, my takes on your boy names:

[name]Fleet[/name]- I feel exactly as you do about it–I love the ship association, the added image of sleek speed, but the first thing that I thought of were the enemas, and I can’t shake it.

[name]Ludo[/name]- not a fan. I’m not sure why, but the Lud names, [name]Ludwig[/name], [name]Ludovic[/name], etc. always conjurs up an image of a lumbering, adenoidal simpleton. I know that sounds harsh, and I can’t figure out why I react this way. I imagine there’s some literary source buried in my subconscious.

[name]Omri[/name]- I sort of like this. I think the pronunciation is tricky, and I’d have to know your last name to see how it sounded, before I’d say for sure. A drawback might be having to spell it frequently–I can see it being misheard as [name]Emory[/name] or Armoury or other -ery names.

[name]Revel[/name]- I see the attraction. I like the clean, smooth sound, and it does sound well with [name]Pilot[/name] and [name]Dexter[/name]. I also like the image of enthusiasm that goes with it. My only hesitation (and this is VERY slight and VERY subtle) is that, to me, revel, as a noun, lies between celebration and orgy (in the Bacchanallian sense), ever so slightly on the dark side.

Vox- also kind of cool. I see two problems with [name]Dexter[/name] [name]Audio[/name] and Vox. First is the [name]Dex[/name]/Vox similarity in sound. Also with [name]Audio[/name] and Vox, you have two ‘aural’ words, so it sounds sort of like you’ve gone back to the same well—[name]Pilot[/name] has his own imagery/source/inspiration; [name]Dexter[/name] and Vox would have to share. Maybe that’s not a big deal. And if the association is important to your family, it might be warranted.

mns
Grimm- I like the idea of honoring your family members. I like the reference to the Brothers Grimm. I like the sound. The only drawback, obviously, is that it’s rather grim.
Venture- I like this.

My favorite first names off your list are [name]Fleet[/name] and [name]Revel[/name], but I have reservations. So, I’m going to offer an alternative to each.

Since you like [name]Fleet[/name], you might like [name]Argo[/name]. Same sailing reference via [name]Jason[/name] and his Argonauts.

Since you like [name]Revel[/name], you might like [name]Jubal[/name]. It recalls the same celebratory feel as [name]Revel[/name], and in [name]Genesis[/name] is credited as the inventor of the flute and lyre, which might appeal if your family has a musical bent.

I think I may have commented on your boys post a while back but I stick to my guns on this one and vote for [name]Fleet[/name] again. (Boy’s name are Much more my comfort level so I am not even going to touch what is going on in your girls forum haha =] Suffice to say I think your choice is very pretty). I must say I absoultely love the name [name]Fleet[/name], especially alongside your other two children. The nautical imagery just makes my heart skip a beat because it seems so perfect! Also, I had no idea about the association with an enema until someone mentioned it in your previous post so I don’t actually think that the reference will come up as often as you might worry. When he is young, the other kids his age are never going to put that together because they won’t even know what an enema is, and I would think that any adults who noticed it would be polite enough to keep their thoughts to themselves. My second choice would probably be [name]Ludo[/name] and the other ones are nms but I have to agree that Vox and [name]Dex[/name] are a little too matchy. [name]Fleet[/name] [name]Oswald[/name] is such a great name for a little guy imo.
Good luck! =]

@rowangreeneyes- Thank you! seriously. My mom was actually going to name me [name]Jared[/name] had I been a boy because The Labyrinth was her favorite movie, she thought his name was [name]Jared[/name]. Other boys names on past lists: [name]Shepherd[/name], [name]Anchor[/name], [name]Arbor[/name], [name]Harte[/name], Rook, [name]Tempo[/name], [name]Foster[/name], [name]Cedar[/name], Pride, Revere and [name]Bandit[/name].

@scheherazade- I like those name suggestions a lot. [name]Anchor[/name] was actually a name we were considering earlier in pregnancy but decided that [name]Anchor[/name] [name]Miller[/name] didn’t flow well enough. I don’t like [name]Ludovic[/name], personally. But that is such an interesting association you have with it. I agree that I doubt he’ll run into any problems with that. Also had Revelry on my girls list, [name]Revel[/name] sounds more masculine to me, and I have a tendency to like shorter names. Thank you so much for your comment!!

@thuja- Thank you! I pronounce it Ahm-ree. Idk if it’s supposed to be pronounced Ome-ree. If it is, I’m scrapping it. Anyone know the correct pronunciation? With Vox- you know, I’ve never thought of one name taking coolness away from the others, very interesting point and it makes sense to me. I like Grimm for both reasons. Thank you!!

[name]Fleet[/name] [name]Oswald[/name] - I kinda like [name]Fleet[/name], though I can imagine him introducing himself to another kid and them saying, “your name is Feet?”
[name]Fleet[/name] Venture - I like Venture as well, but [name]Fleet[/name] Venture sounds like the name of a shipping company.
[name]Ludo[/name] [name]Fleet[/name] - hmm, [name]Ludo[/name] isn’t really my style, but it’s nice enough, I like [name]Ludo[/name] [name]Fleet[/name] and [name]Ludo[/name] Venture the best of the options
[name]Ludo[/name] Grimm
[name]Ludo[/name] Venture
[name]Ludo[/name] Vox
[name]Omri[/name] Grimm
[name]Omri[/name] Venture - hmm, I don’t know, it’s okay, I’ve never heard of it, but it has a nice flow and sound to it.
[name]Revel[/name] Grimm
[name]Revel[/name] Vox - I really love [name]Revel[/name]!
Vox Venture - it’s nice, though I prefer [name]Revel[/name]

Some of my more ‘wishlisty’ ones are [name]Suede[/name], [name]Ajax[/name], [name]Rigel[/name], Faroe, [name]Vesper[/name], [name]Afton[/name], and Zeal

Like [name]Revel[/name], [name]Fleet[/name] and Vox. [name]Fleet[/name] would be my favorite, except for the enema thing, which I didn’t even think about until you brought it up but now you can’t un-think it, ykwim? Vox is very cool and it’s nice that it has meaning for your family. I don’t think [name]Dex[/name] and Vox sound too similar. What about [name]Fox[/name]? I know you like one-syllable F names and animal names. Also, what about Swift? It’s similar to [name]Fleet[/name] I think.

My favorite from your list is [name]Omri[/name]. I pronounce it the way you do. [name]Ludo[/name] would be my second pick. I like Grimm, especially for the family connection. [name]Ludo[/name] Grimm and [name]Omri[/name] Grimm are awesome.

Thanks every one. It’s really interesting to get everyone’s thoughts on the names. I never thought of the enema either until I mentioned the name on here and as much as I’ve tried to ignore it, it’s pretty hard to now…
As for the name [name]Fox[/name], a friend of a friend has a boy named [name]Fox[/name] and she brought it up to me because she thought it was the coolest thing ever. It’s not bad, but I find foxes so trendy right now. It’s just not gonna work for me. But trust when I say, I have considered it.

I love the middle names you have picked out, they are awesome.

Out of the first names I like [name]Revel[/name], Vox, and [name]Ludo[/name] the best.

[name]Revel[/name] is my favorite for you. I like [name]Revel[/name] Venture. Good luck!

[name]Arbor[/name] was on my list for awhile, for a girl. I’ve been saying [name]Omri[/name] in my head all day and I am beginning to really like it! I remembered it’s from the [name]Indian[/name] in the Cupboard, that’s why it sounded so familiar. Very cool. I sent you a suggestion in a private message because I thought you would like it.

Yeah it’s ‘om-ree’ (om like the end of [name]Tom[/name] or [name]Dom[/name]) like the main character in the book ‘The [name]Indian[/name] in the Cupboard’. [name]Ludo[/name] is my favourite from your list.

My first thought for [name]Fleet[/name] was fast, like “fleet of foot.” But with [name]Pilot[/name] I might be concerned that it would come off as war-like.

[name]Omri[/name] and [name]Ludo[/name] are just ok for me.

I love, love, love [name]Revel[/name] and Vox. [name]Revel[/name] Venture and Vox Grimm are awesome.

I think [name]Revel[/name], Vox and Venture are the most evocative names by far. My favorites are the latter two since [name]Revel[/name] I think will very often be misheard as ‘revel.’

I don’t think [name]Dexter[/name] and Vox are too close. If anything, look at the [name]Jolie[/name]-Pitts for confirmation ([name]Maddox[/name], [name]Pax[/name] and [name]Knox[/name] all end with X).

I also think the suggestion of Swift was pretty genius-- a swift is a small bird, and the everyday word means ‘fleet,’ and it’s got a snappy 1-syllable sound.

Surgeons in general are inordinately concerned with people’s bowel function (more so than the average person, I grant you). I prescribe fleet’s enemas at least twice a week, to people young and old. To me it’s the dominant association of the word, and it might be not just for the elderly or for other docs but also for anyone who’s ever had surgery (since post-op constipation is present in >80% of patients).

I love the sounds of Vox and Venture together, but wonder if you might salvage [name]Oswald[/name] here and stick it in the middle? Vox [name]Oswald[/name] Venture sounds great-- you get fusty old [name]Oswald[/name] bookended by two sharp modern meaning words starting with V; and your son would get a “standard” name just like his brothers. [name]Oswald[/name] himself was a cool historical figure-- a 7th century king who Christianized northeastern [name]England[/name] before being slain in battle.

[name]One[/name] final thought-- I can’t believe Venture isn’t used more often. It’s a very uplifting word, a noun and a verb, inspiring one to undertake new adventures and set off into the unknown.

I just love saying it… Vox [name]Oswald[/name] Venture [name]Miller[/name]…

I really like [name]Revel[/name] and Venture and Vox. Vox Venture is such a spunky and cool name combo! I’d go for that one!

From the list, I like [name]Fleet[/name] and [name]Ludo[/name]. I think Vox is too similar to [name]Dex[/name], and [name]Revel[/name] just makes me think of the candy! [name]Omri[/name] I just don’t care for personally.
