Please tell me what you think of this list. Mix them, match them, sibset them, scream in horror, recommend others, whatever.
FN/MN pairs or sibsets would be really appreciated. I’m curious as to what “goes together” for other people, or what names don’t clash too much.
Some of these are more my husband’s than mine. Others of mine aren’t on here because he vetoed them. There’s a lot of names ending in -an and -on and -en because my husband apparently is fixated on that sound, lol. That’s helpful on establishing a style… but it sorta jacks up a sibset.
First or middle
[name]Aidan[/name]
[name]Orion[/name]
[name]Ronan[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Hanan[/name] - A family name for me. Not too antiquated sounding, I don’t think. DH thinks its a bit odd.
[name]Euan[/name] / [name]Ewan[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Hugh[/name]
[name]Zacharias[/name] - I love this one, husband is a bit chilly on it. Hasn’t vetoed it yet though!
[name]Finn[/name] / [name]Fionn[/name]
[name]Lazarus[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] - A family name for me, and DH doesn’t hate it. What would this sibset okay with?
[name]Saul[/name]
[name]Hale[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name] / [name]Gavriel[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Malachi[/name] - Okay, I really love this one as a name but a 3 syllable M name that ends in “eye” is just awful with a last name that’s a 3 syllable M name that ends in “eee” isn’t it?
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Jonathan[/name] - This is a frontrunner at the moment as one we both like okay, but it doesn’t really “go” with many sibsets you can make of our other names, does it, as all the other “normal” ones are also -an sort of endings?! ARGH! [name]Jon[/name]/[name]Jonny[/name] is a cute nickname. This would only be used as a first name. The middle name would probably be slightly more offbeat.
[name]Cyrus[/name]
Only as Middles
[name]Phoenix[/name]
[name]Eoin[/name] - Pronounced “[name]Owen[/name].” DH is quite partial to the Gaelic spelling. I say [name]Owen[/name] can be first or middle but [name]Eoin[/name] should probably be a middle?
[name]Piers[/name] / [name]Pierce[/name]
[name]Joel[/name] - I just like this as a middle name that goes with everything, rather like the [name]Rose[/name] of boys names. [name]Rhys[/name] / [name]Rhett[/name]
[name]Peregrine[/name]
Peacemaker
[name]Oisin[/name] - Pronounced oh-sheen.
[name]Phinnaeus[/name] - I like this more than [name]Finn[/name], DH likes it less.
[name]Harvey[/name] - Family name.
[name]Hart[/name]
[name]Zvi[/name] - or spelt Tsvi or Tzvi.
I work in a pediatric clinic. Please spare your child from the name [name]Aiden[/name]/[name]Ayden[/name]/[name]Aidyn[/name]. I actually love the sound of this name but honestly, there are like two or three [name]EVERY[/name] [name]DAY[/name] that come into the clinic. It’s like back when I was in school. I was always ‘[name]Kelly[/name] M.’ because there were 4 [name]Kelly[/name]'s.
I love:
[name]Ronan[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name] (I am hearing this for girls a lot nowadays, but it’s still awesome for boys)
[name]Euan[/name] / [name]Ewan[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Heath[/name] (if it weren’t the name of my old elementary school I might be very tempted by it myself)
[name]Fox[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name] / [name]Gavriel[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Silas[/name] (this is actually my son’s name!)
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Jonathan[/name] (you can totally do sibsets with this; see below)
[name]Piers[/name] / [name]Pierce[/name] (I love this as a first, too)
[name]Joel[/name] (ditto)
I’m okay with:
[name]Orion[/name]
[name]Hanan[/name] (not totally clear on the pronunciation for this, so actually I would probably keep it in the middle slot)
[name]Hugh[/name]
[name]Zacharias[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Saul[/name]
[name]Hale[/name]
I would use as middles:
[name]Phoenix[/name]
[name]Eoin[/name]
[name]Peregrine[/name]
[name]Rhys[/name]/[name]Rhett[/name]
[name]Oisin[/name]
[name]Harvey[/name]
[name]Hart[/name]
[name]Zvi[/name]
I would not use:
[name]Aidan[/name] (just too popular!)
[name]Finn[/name] / [name]Fionn[/name] (ditto, at least in my circles)
[name]Lazarus[/name] (I want to like this more than I do. It just makes me think of rising from the dead and it kind of creeps me out.)
[name]Malachi[/name] (from what you say, it doesn’t really work with your last name)
Peacemaker (okay, I like the meaning, but it makes me think of the missile)
[name]Phinnaeus[/name] (I may be wrong but I think this spelling originates with [name]Julia[/name] [name]Roberts[/name]. [name]Phineas[/name] is the traditional form.)
My favorite sibsets:
[name]Fox[/name]/[name]Rowan[/name], [name]Fox[/name]/[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]/[name]Piers[/name], [name]Ewan[/name]/[name]Piers[/name], [name]Owen[/name]/[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Jonathan[/name]/[name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Jonathan[/name]/[name]Silas[/name], [name]Jonathan[/name]/[name]Zacharias[/name] (assuming they will mostly go by [name]Jon[/name] and [name]Zach[/name])
I love [name]Owen[/name] / [name]Eoin[/name]… I think the Gaelic spelling is fine as a first name. I think it’s easier to pronounce on sight than [name]Siobhan[/name], and plenty of people use that.
