My last name ends with -ley, so all -ly/ley names should be out right?

[name_u]Wylie[/name_u], [name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_u]Finley[/name_u], etc

Am I wrong for thinking those should be tossed out because of my last name?

Not necessarily.

Look at how beautiful [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m] DiCaprio sounds as a name.

I think it depends; they could clash or they could work together very well.

Not at all – it’s so hard to say without actually knowing… but for instance, [name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_m]Manley[/name_m] doesn’t clash so much. And that isn’t even a last name hahaha, I just couldn’t think of one. So no, it doesn’t have to be an absolute no.

Well… I think its ok to take it on a case by case basis but the majority of them will very much rhyme because more so that with other endings the [name_m]Ly[/name_m] sound … Well it lends itself to rhymyness, say your sn is [name_f]Holly[/name_f], [name_u]Marley[/name_u] [name_f]Holly[/name_f]? I don’t know up to you, if its [name_u]Harley[/name_u], [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_u]Harley[/name_u] … Again not awful … [name_f]Hailey[/name_f] [name_u]Marley[/name_u]? I think it really depends on the names, [name_u]Harley[/name_u] [name_u]Marley[/name_u] is awful lol but like I said you could pull certain ones off depending…

Am I allowed to post my last name on this site or no?

I’m assuming you can, I see people do it all the time.

If you use a 3 syllable first or have a 3 syllable last I think you can pull it off.

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_m]Calloway[/name_m] doesn’t sound odd, as an example.

I agree that it really depends. I believe you can post your last name if you feel comfortable doing so, but if it is an uncommon surname you may want to come up with a stand in that sounds similar to protect your privacy but would still give people an idea of how [name_u]Riley[/name_u] or [name_u]Finley[/name_u] would sound with you real surname.

I think it depends on syllables and sounds. [name_u]Wylie[/name_u] [name_u]McKinley[/name_u] doesn’t sound so bad, because [name_u]Wylie[/name_u] has two syllables and [name_u]McKinley[/name_u] has three, and the WHY sound in [name_u]Wylie[/name_u] is different from MUH-KIN in [name_u]McKinley[/name_u]. However, despite [name_u]Finley[/name_u] also having two syllables, [name_u]Finley[/name_u] rhymes with [name_u]McKinley[/name_u], so that doesn’t sound so great; [name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_u]Riley[/name_u] doesn’t sound very good either, because both names have two syllables.

I think you’re allowed to post your last name. If you don’t want it to be searchable, you could use !,@, #, etc. to stand in for some letters ($m!th, for example), or say something like “rhymes with [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] but starts with D” or something.

I think it would be helpful to know the surname for the purposes of the conversation, but in general I’d say that the further the first name is from the last name, the better. For example, [name_f]Milly[/name_f] [name_m]Manley[/name_m] sounds more rhymey than [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] [name_u]McKinley[/name_u] because they share more sounds, they have the same number of syllables, and the same syllable is stressed in both of them.

Overall, though, I tend to agree with you that if your surname ends with “ley”, you should try to avoid using first names that also end in that sound. However, if your absolute #1 name ends in “ley” and you would be devastated not to use it, I’ve definitely seen worse naming sins committed.

eh. Personally i think it would sound too similar. There are lots of nice names that wont rhyme with your last name. I would personally steer clear or at the very least make sure they aren’t the same amount of syllables.

I agree with the previous posters - it all depends. Unfortunately, I’ve had to rule out any names that end in a “O” sound because they would sound really strange with my last name. It’s a bit clunkier than the distinguished DiCaprio, haha.

Yup, totally case by case. If the first name has different number of syllables than the last, it can be just fine.
[name_u]Riley[/name_u] Connolley is fine.
[name_u]Wylie[/name_u] [name_u]Presley[/name_u] maybe a bit awkward.
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_m]Hurley[/name_m] maybe a bit awkward.

Last name rhymes with manly. Take away the “m” and replace it with a “sh”

  • ly/-ley names are being overused right now anyway. I’d definitely choose something less trendy and more suitable w/your surname.

What first names were you considering?

Given your surname, I’d say [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is definitely too rhymey - that they both have two syllables and end in “-nley” makes them too close to me.

I’d avoid [name_u]Wylie[/name_u] and [name_u]Riley[/name_u] too, since they also share two syllables and the “ley” ending. If one of them is your absolute favourite, you can totally get away with it and people do worse all the time, but neither sounds great to me. Sorry!

Its all good, I was just curious. Thanks

I think it could actually be a pretty cute combo! Depending on the name, of course. It might make the combo seem a little sing-song-y though.
