Lately I’ve been loving the name [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] for a baby girl. I think it’s so cute, it fits my naming style nicely, and I have a few family members named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] problem is that my current dog is named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]. I love my dog so much! She is the sweetest little dog ever! She’s an older dog so by the time I decide to have kids she will be gone, but I’m worried if I named my daughter [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] everyone in my family would think of our dog. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any advice for me?
Hmm. That’s a tough one. I honestly don’t think I would feel comfortable naming a child the same name that a family pet had. I guess it depends on how much people will association [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] with the dog.
More antidote than advice. [name_f]My[/name_f] FIL had a dog named [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] SIL has twins while the dog was still alive and my niece is named [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] named after family on the other side. No one thought it was overly odd at the time or since.
Also, my first car was named [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]. I really love that name still and I feel like enough time has passed. I’m seriously considering naming any future daughter, [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]!
So I guess I’m saying if you love a name that much then feel free to go for it!
I totally agree with @lindens and don’t think it’s an issue at all. As you say, your dog likely won’t be around by the time you have kids and anyway, you love your dog so it’s not like it’s a negative association. I know a lot of people think it’s a no no but I’ve never really understood why. I’m a huge animal lover so maybe that’s why; I’ve even thought about using certain names to reference animals I’ve had that I’ve loved!
My dads friends had a cat called [name_u]Holly[/name_u] and when the first child came along, she was called [name_u]Holly[/name_u] as well. Some people did make jokes about the cat and daughter having the same name- his friends weren’t impressed! But at the end of the day, both the cat and the daughter had a lovely name and the cat didn’t live for ever so only close friends and family knew that they both had the same name anyway!
I think it’s something you’d have to wait until you’re ready to have kids. See how long has passed between then and now and how fresh the dog [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is in everyone’s mind. I think it would probably be fine though
