Mythological names?

I’m looking for unusual girls names that are rooted in mythology. I’ve always been a history/ancient civilizations buff, and I thought it would be a cool idea to use a mythological name for a baby. It doesn’t really matter about the specific religion or country (Greek, [name]Roman[/name], Sanskrit, etc.) anything other than the “normal” mythology names…[name]Athena[/name], [name]Aphrodite[/name], and the like. So far, I’ve found a few I like…let me know what you think of them.

Asherah - Israeli goddess, means “she who treads on the sea”

[name]Ceres[/name] - [name]Roman[/name] goddess of agriculture, not exactly sure how this one is pronounced…I’m assuming like [name]Carys[/name]?

[name]Indira[/name] - another name for the goddess [name]Lakshmi[/name], I also like the [name]Indira[/name] Gandhi association.

Bellona - [name]Roman[/name] goddess of war

[name]Hi[/name]! I love mythology too, although I 'm afraid I really only know about the Greek gods and goddesses. I’ll see what I can do, though.

First off, [name]Ceres[/name] is pronounced like the word “series”.

[name]Iris[/name]- You probably know this one. She was the messanger goddess. She travelled by rainbow.

[name]Hestia[/name]/[name]Vesta[/name]- She is my favorite goddess. She proceeded over the hearth and home. She gave up her throne to [name]Dionysus[/name], so that order would remain. She was one of the virgin goddesses and one of the gentlest.

[name]Flora[/name]- [name]Goddess[/name] of springtime.

[name]Atlas[/name]- Greek god who held up the sky.

[name]Selene[/name]- [name]Goddess[/name] of the moon.

[name]Eir[/name]- A norse goddess of healing who helped all those that suffered.

Skade- Norse goddess of skiing. Could make a cool boy’s name.

[name]Odin[/name]- One of the most important gods in Norse mythology. I believe his name means spirit? I could be very wrong, though.

[name]Hope[/name] you like them!

Quirk

[name]Just[/name] noticed you said only girl’s names. Sorry!

I love ancient history and mythology! [name]Indira[/name] is my favorite on your list. I think [name]Ceres[/name] is probably pronounced like [name]Carys[/name], since the C would be a hard C in Latin. It could also be sare-iss…

[name]Fionnuala[/name]
[name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Emer[/name]
[name]Grainne[/name]

They aren’t all goddesses; some are nymphs, characters in myths, or heros.

[name]Ceres[/name] (I pronounce it SEER-ees), [name]Indira[/name] and Asherah are all very nice. Bellona just reminds me of Bologna unfortunately (the lunchmeat, not the place in [name]Italy[/name], lol). Here are some others you might like:

[name]Ariadne[/name] - Cretan goddess of fertility
[name]Acantha[/name] - a nymph loved by [name]Apollo[/name]
[name]Anthea[/name] - the epithet of [name]Hera[/name].

[name]Nyx[/name] - Greek goddess of night
[name]Pax[/name] - Greek goddess of peace
[name]Pomona[/name] - [name]Roman[/name] goddess of fruit trees
[name]Priya[/name] - from Hindu legend, means beloved
[name]Reva[/name] - a Hindu goddess
[name]Rhiannon[/name] - Welsh goddess of fertility
[name]Tanith[/name] - Phoenician goddess of love
Usha - Hindu goddess of dawn

My favorite mythology names are the Greek [name]Muse[/name] names, they are more unfamiliar than the normal [name]Goddess[/name]/God names, here are the most usable of the nine:

[name]Calliope[/name] - muse of epic poetry
[name]Clio[/name] - muse of history
[name]Thalia[/name] - muse of comedy

[name]Hope[/name] that helps!

here ya go.

My name, [name]Freya[/name], I know is from Norse mythology. =) Other names I like are [name]Luna[/name], [name]Thea[/name], [name]Iris[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Jana[/name], [name]Juno[/name], [name]Rhea[/name], [name]Minerva[/name], [name]Delia[/name], and [name]Diana[/name]. [name]Ceres[/name] is pronounced like series, seer-eez.

Latin names are pronounced with a hard C so it’d be a little like [name]Carys[/name], when spoken correctly. However, we all know how [name]Caesar[/name] is pronounced nowadays, so everyone says it ‘Series or Seres.’

[name]Hera[/name] - goddess of marriage (greek), simple and beautiful.
[name]Flora[/name] - goddess of all that flourishes (roman), same as above
[name]Dalia[/name] - goddess of weaving, fate and childbird (lithuanian)
[name]Minerva[/name] - goddess of war and wisdom (greek), hard to bear but [name]Minnie[/name] is cute.
[name]Morrigan[/name] - war goddess (celtic), a little too close to [name]Morgan[/name]
[name]Rhiannon[/name] - goddess of the moon (celtic), nice.
[name]Thalia[/name] - comedy muse (greek), beautiful
