Those of you who are not greek myth buffs, let me know if this would be a issue to the average human being.
I love Epic and the Odyssey both and would like to have a name that relates to both of them.
So for my list, consider these two options:
- Odysseus child of hatred
- Telemachus Faraway Fighter
I love how Odysseus sounds and love the nickname Ody, but am nervous about potentially the meaning coming back up. (Plus his grandpa fr named Odysseus bc he felt he had been angered by many
)
Telemachus i dont like as much and in terms of nicknames, I have no nicknames. But it has a much more pleasant meaning.
Antinous *Opposite in Mind. Again no nickname ideas. Kinda sounds dumb with my accent/impediment.
And then for girls i have
Penelope (meaning: Weaver…or maybe Duck ) Tons of nicknames! Absolutely precious! But shes odysseus’s wife and therefore cant be siblings with an Odysseus
Hekate (heh-kuh-tee): would always be mispronounced. But rlly cute I think?
Pandora: Could have the nn Dory!!! But also idk if I like the connotations

Odysseus’ meaning would be a no for me. I think [name_m]Odie[/name_m] is super cute but that meaning would bother me, as a parent and as a kid.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Telemachus[/name_m] doesn’t feel the most usable and yet I’m not put off by it. I think the nickname [name_m]Telly[/name_m] or Mac(/k) would work and feel less daunting than the whole name every time.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_m]Weaver[/name_m] is adorable. Feels boho without trying too hard which is refreshing and meant in the best way.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Hekate[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- I’m in the US and my phone kept correcting it and that would drive me crazy. This is a name I see people liking from time to time and I think if I meant one I could be swayed but I do hesitate to say it every time. Something about it though isn’t a complete no for me. I think if someone used it I would be excited for the boldness.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]- I think box. This name feels like the opposite of [name_f]Hekate[/name_f] to me, it feels more try hard cool rather than my parents have cool interests and gave me a meaningful name. [name_m]Like[/name_m] the others. It feels the most accessible other than [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and it’s the one I feel is least impressive. I respect the boldness of the others as a non-myth, [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking namer.

I personally find that name meanings don’t come up all that much in day-to-day life, so I wouldn’t let it stop you! Plus, if you have other ties to [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] beyond its literal meaning, I think thats way more significant. [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] is so cool, and [name_m]Ody[/name_m] is the sweetest nickname!!
[name_f][/name_f]
As for the girls, yes, I’d be a bit hesitant about [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] as siblings. [name_f]Hekate[/name_f] is super cool, but I do think pronunciation would be difficult.

I’ve never read the [name_f]Odyssey[/name_f], though I want to (I have read the absolutely beautiful watercolor graphic novel version so I know the story!) Greek mythology names are always fun but I’m always worried they could sound pretentious…
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] + [name_m]Telemachus[/name_m]: I actually really like these as middles! [name_m]You[/name_m] could get the sound of [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] without the meaning being first and foremost, or include the meaning of [name_m]Telemachus[/name_m] as a special meaningful middle.
[name_f][/name_f]
I don’t think I like Antinous… it sounds like antagonist or just generally negative words.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is absolutely lovely!! And she could[name_f][/name_f] be siblings if her brother has [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] as a middle instead of a first.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Hekate[/name_f] I think is more useable than [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] / [name_m]Telemachus[/name_m]. I’m more used to seeing it as [name_f]Hecate[/name_f], would you use that?
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] I like too with nn [name_m]Dory[/name_m] but the ‘Pandora’s box’ association is pretty strong… use as a middle maybe?

As Odysseus’ etymology is not known for certain, it personally would not bother me to use that name at all! But I also am not a person that puts too much stock into meanings!
[name_f][/name_f] I suppose it only matters if it bothers you! For what it is worth, I think it is a fabulous name, and [name_m]Ody[/name_m] is such a sweet nickname!!

I have a friend with sons named @urelius[name_f][/name_f] and [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m]. [name_m]Super[/name_m] cool names! I’m a name nerd and didn’t know the possible etymology of [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m]. I wouldn’t let it stop you from using it. It if it were me, I’d go with [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] and [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] from your list. I do also really like [name_f]Hekate[/name_f], but not sure I can picture it on an actual person. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is cute, but much too common compared to all the others.

[name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] → I know meanings can matter a lot, but there are plenty of popular names with less than ‘perfect’ meanings (Cameron, [name_m]Calvin[/name_m], [name_m]Tristan[/name_m], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], Claudia) and they still get used. I guess you could think about [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] as more of a reference to a long journey?
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Telemachus[/name_m] – a bold choice [name_f][/name_f]- but nicknames could be Mac/Mack, [name_m]Max[/name_m], [name_m]Taz[/name_m], Tez, [name_m]Lemmy[/name_m], [name_m]Lachie[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]
Antinous – it could work as a variation on names like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], but it feels quite wordy? And if it doesn’t sound right in your accent, it might not be the one. Nicknames could be… [name_m]Nash[/name_m], Ant, [name_m]Andy[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] – lovely name, and while I probably wouldn’t use it for a sister to [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] (the disparity in popularity, the mythological marriage status), but maybe if one of them was a middle it would be fine?
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Hekate[/name_f] – zippy and cool [name_f][/name_f]- I do think it might be mispronounced but it could be corrected [name_f][/name_f]- since people can learn the -ee sound as the end of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] or [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]?
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] – a charming name but even those who don’t know a lot about mythology are likely to know the connotations of this one?
Personally I like all of these names, especially [name_f]Odyssey[/name_f] and [name_f]Hekate[/name_f] (such[name_f][/name_f] a gp).
