My husband and I really like the name [name]Nadia[/name]. In fact, my husband adores it. We both love that it means “hope”. But we’re not sure that we could pull off such a Slavic name with an Irish surname Mc_______. Weren’t really sure what kind of nickname could be used either. Then I found [name]Natalia[/name], which we thought might be a better flow, especially with nn [name]Talia[/name]. (I’m not keen on [name]Nat[/name] or [name]Tallie[/name] as a nn).
What would be your preference between the two? Any other suggestions beyond [name]Nadia[/name] and [name]Natalia[/name]?
I prefer [name]Natalia[/name] over [name]Nadia[/name]. What about the traditional [name]Natalie[/name], or a variation on the spelling, like [name]Nathalie[/name]?
I actually find [name]Nadia[/name] to be just as international as [name]Natalia[/name]. It’s common in Spanish as well - my husband is of Mexican descent, and has an aunt [name]Nadia[/name]. I don’t know any nicknames for it, though, so if you insist on having a nickname (personally, I prefer full names) then maybe [name]Natalia[/name]'s your best bet.
[name]Both[/name] are my friends name and I like it.
My friend, [name]Nadya[/name] (She use the russian spelling) always go by [name]Nadya[/name], no shortened version as a nn.
Agree with esever88, use [name]Natalia[/name] if you really want to use nn. [name]Natalia[/name] nn [name]Thalia[/name] is so pretty.
I’ve known two girls named [name]Nadia[/name].
[name]One[/name] was South African with a French surname, the other is Chinese with a Chinese surname, and they both fit their names well imo.
In this day and age, origins hardly matter much anymore.
As for which I prefer, I like both the same actually.
[name]Nadia[/name]! I absolutely adore it, and wish it got more recognition. I, too, love that it means hope. I really think [name]Nadia[/name] is international–I think of [name]Nadia[/name] Boulanger, a French woman who worked with the composer [name]Hector[/name] Berlioz, and the one little [name]Nadia[/name] I’ve met in my life–who had Latin roots. I wouldn’t bat an eye if I met a [name]Nadia[/name] McNamara, [name]Nadia[/name] [name]McKenzie[/name], [name]Nadia[/name] McPhireson, whatever. I would just be impressed at her parents’ name choice!
[name]Natalia[/name] is lovely, and I have a soft spot for it since my adorable, loveable, huggable, sweet, stubborn, matter-of-fact, know-it-all baby sister is [name]Natalie[/name]. I have called her [name]Natalia[/name] for fun sometimes, but I like [name]Nadia[/name] and [name]Natalie[/name] a lot more, personally. Besides, [name]Nadia[/name]'s the least common of the two (or three)–that seems like a bonus to me, although I don’t know if popularity is a concern for you.
[name]Both[/name] [name]Nadia[/name] Mc______ and [name]Natalia[/name] ______ sound very international to me. I think either would work very well.
Other considerations to play with: [name]Nadine[/name] (though it’s French, I’ve read that it’s found some popularity in Northern [name]Ireland[/name]), just [name]Talia[/name] could be pretty, [name]Natasha[/name], or [name]Natalie[/name]/[name]Nathalie[/name] as others have suggested
I think either would work fine, can I ask how many syllables your last name is, or if you have a middle name in mind? That might help decide which one ‘fits’ better I actually think I prefer [name]Nadia[/name] just because it’s a bit more unique, but if you want to use [name]Talia[/name], [name]Natalia[/name] does work better.
I find [name]Natalia[/name] far more “Slavic” than [name]Nadia[/name]. [name]Nadia[/name] has been used in several different cultures that I don’t really associate it with one culture.
I agree that [name]Nadia[/name] does not sound more exotic that [name]Natalia[/name]. So if you like [name]Nadia[/name] and your husband loves it then I would keep that name at the top of your list.
[name]Natalia[/name] would be lovely it is soft, sweet and feminine [name]Nadia[/name] is harder a bit like [name]Natalie[/name] versus [name]Stella[/name].
Or
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Naomi[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] nn [name]Anna[/name]
[name]Marianna[/name]/[name]Marian[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name] is quite universal and its simplicity is quite attractive with today’s trends without being trendy. I do think [name]Natalia[/name] is a pretty name and so is [name]Talia[/name]. The good news is there is not a bad choice here! Other things to consider that might help you decide- the total sound of your last name, not just the Mc. For ex. is it 3 or 4 syllables, in which [name]Nadia[/name] is better. [name]How[/name] important is a nn? [name]Both[/name] [name]Nadia[/name] and [name]Natalia[/name] are so pretty I hate to see them nn. I think [name]DeeDee[/name] is a sweet pet name for [name]Nadia[/name]. And also, what mn are you considering? [name]One[/name] may sound better with it and/or with the whole fn/mn/ln combo.
There is one more thing- [name]Nadia[/name] is MUCH less popular That would weigh into my decision, but then again, [name]Talia[/name] ranks close to [name]Nadia[/name], so if you go with calling her [name]Talia[/name], popularity isn’t much of an issue…
I love reading your insight! Each of you have considered so many of the things that are important to me! First of all, I was worried about the ‘fit’; I had never heard how many other cultures use the name [name]Nadia[/name] before you told me!! I mean, these days, the unwritten rule seems to be, “if you like it, use it!”, but with my husband’s and my classic names, [name]Michael[/name] and [name]Kimberly[/name] ([name]Kimmie[/name]), I don’t want to pick anything that doesn’t have the same feel. Since looking and discussing names for our children, I feel very strongly that they should “reflect” us and our family. We feel that [name]Nadia[/name]'s meaning “[name]Hope[/name]” does that; I just had reservations about it’s strong ‘exotic flare’.
Personally, I [name]LOVE[/name] that I am known by my pet name (especially because I work with children a lot ~ Miss [name]Kimmie[/name] is easy to pull out) but I also [name]LOVE[/name] when there is an occasion to take out my formal given name. I think I love it more as the years go on. So to me, viable pet names for girls has always been an added benefit. On the other hand, my husband has learned that he is proud to use his full name. Nicknames aren’t exactly mandatory, but in a world full of difficult and heavy choices, your name is a fun option to explore if given the chance! (Although I do like the simplicity of [name]Natalie[/name], I really don’t care for the nn’s [name]Nat[/name] and [name]Tallie[/name] that would be used, nor do I like that that name has become so popular. The nn [name]Talia[/name] is charming and I suppose [name]Natalia[/name] captivates me because of the differently stressed syllables.)
Syllables and flow are one of THEE most important things to me! Our last name is 4 syllables, prn [name]Mack[/name] 'n [name]Ernie[/name]… not nearly as pretty as McPhireson or McNamara! As many of you stated, [name]Nadia[/name] and [name]Natalia[/name] are equally beautiful yet intriguing in their own way. At first glance, I think ‘Slavic’ when I see [name]Nadia[/name] and ‘Italian’ when I see [name]Natalia[/name]. But all your comments made me think about my own history. My grandpa’s parents had actually immigrated here from Eastern Europe where the name [name]Nadia[/name] came from; the country of Hungary to be exact. And although I don’t really feel close to that part of my history, it is still a part of me, and [name]Nadia[/name] might bring that Old World Charm back to our family.
[name]Adelaide[/name] is my ultimate favorite girl’s name and [name]Nadia[/name] is my husband’s. [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Addie[/name] and [name]Nadia[/name] flow better as a sib set than [name]Addie[/name]/[name]Talia[/name]? My DH and I never did come up with a middle name choice for [name]Nadia[/name], but if I am really considering it as a top choice now, does anyone have suggestions??? (If we were to use [name]Natalia[/name], [name]Clarice[/name] would be the mn choice.)
[name]Adelaide[/name] is lovely, too! I was thinking that [name]Addie[/name] could be a nn for [name]Nadia[/name], too, so I think [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Natalia[/name]/[name]Addie[/name] and [name]Talia[/name] would work better than [name]Addie[/name] and [name]Nadia[/name] would, but both would be lovely.
I’ve always been torn about MNs for [name]Nadia[/name], but I have liked [name]Nadia[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name], [name]Nadia[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name], and [name]Nadia[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] in the past.
If you choose [name]Nadia[/name] then this may suit you (a small change from [name]Adelaide[/name] to [name]Adelina[/name])
Combo of [name]Nadia[/name] [name]Adelina[/name] I like the way that [name]Adelina[/name] makes [name]Nadia[/name] feel softer and more feminine
I would also think [name]Adelina[/name] as a first name would bring back the Eastern European feel to the family.
I know of a [name]Lisa[/name] [name]Natalia[/name] but that is dated now but [name]Elisabeth[/name] [name]Natalia[/name] and [name]Nadia[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name] sound good together too.
Adelina…hmm. That’s one that has never been on my radar before, Rollo. I can completely see the Eastern European touch that that would bring. (As you can see, we are still working on our names even after my last thread )
[name]Adelina[/name] is on my radar because I know someone who has two beautiful daughters named Adelina and Liliana. I think that is a very pretty sibset.
