Name advice for sibling

Hello!

[name_f][/name_f]

I currently have a daughter named [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and if her sibling is a boy the only name my husband likes is Charlie.. I find its way too similar and rhymes too much although I do love the name. Would it be stupid to have two siblings named [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and [name_m]Charlie[/name_m]?

It would get a lot of annoying comments and I wouldn’t do it (too matchy, even though they’re actually stylistically quite different). But it’s whether you and they as kids and adults (on the occasion you mention siblings’ names) would be OK with some teasing - eg “is there a dog, Harley?”.

What about Charles nn Charlie or better:

Arlo
Archie (or Arthur / Archer nn Archie)
Leo
Toby
Rory
Callum
Calvin
Harry
Henry
Harvey
Jack
Theo

Edit: one of my friends has siblings with the fem and masc version of the same name. It did always get comments when she said their names but they are happy adults with their own lives - they made it through OK! So def not a terrible thing by any stretch. They’re both good names. Just not my preference to use both.

Imo the names are too similar, but it could work if his full name was [name_m]Charles[/name_m], and you nicknamed him [name_m]Charlie[/name_m]? I know siblings called [name_f]Sandie[/name_f] and [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] “[name_f]Mandi[/name_f]” (Sandie + Mandi), and no one thinks too much of it because it’s not Mandi’s full name.

Much too similar for me, it sounds pretty cheesy… I imagine the jokes would get tiring, and it could get confusing around the house (calling out “Marley!” and [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] thinking you’re talking to him & vice versa).

[name_f][/name_f]

Maybe [name_f]Marley[/name_f] & [name_m]Finn[/name_m], [name_m]Theo[/name_m], [name_m]Ollie[/name_m], [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Benji[/name_m], [name_m]Beck[/name_m], [name_m]Duncan[/name_m], [name_m]Elliott[/name_m], [name_m]Ellis[/name_m], [name_m]Emmett[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_m]Jude[/name_m], [name_m]Kai[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Percy[/name_m], [name_m]Rory[/name_m], [name_m]Remy[/name_m], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], [name_m]Rhys[/name_m], [name_m]Sullivan[/name_m], [name_m]Nolan[/name_m]?

[name_f]Marley[/name_f] &

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Christian[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Brayden[/name_m]

There’ll be other names you both agree on. I would cross this off the list and look for new options together. Once it’s crossed off, he’ll have no choice but to consider other names.

[name_f][/name_f]

Would you like some suggestions?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Owen[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jamie[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Luca[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Chase[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Sonny[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Finley[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Max[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Lenny[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]River[/name_m]

I think if [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f] was named [name_m]Charles[/name_m] / [name_m]Charleston[/name_m] and went by other nicknames like
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Chuck[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Chucky[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Les[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Tony[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Carl[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f]Than it would be ok but I think [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] are far too close

[name_f][/name_f]

What about [name_f][/name_f]:
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Christian[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Arlo[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Chad[/name_m]

Yes.

[name_f][/name_f]

All the best with finding another name you love just as much :light_blue_heart:

I definitely wouldn’t do it. That’s the thing about names–most choices do rule out others. Whether it’s rhymes, character associations, or meanings, when we pick a name for our firstborn, we are simultaneously rejecting others for our secondborn.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Can[/name_m] you do it? Sure. But if you are hoping that no one will comment on it, or no one will think it’s ridiculous, that’s not reality. It will be commented on, whether it’s to your face or behind your back.

[name_f][/name_f]

That said, I do know siblings in real life with the following pairings, which I don’t understand and personally would have strongly voted against. But they’re here, existing, and I’m sure are not traumatized by their names.:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_f]Jill[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Larry[/name_m] & [name_m]Gary[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Victor[/name_m] & [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Everett[/name_m] & [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Ivy[/name_f] & [name_m]Ivan[/name_m]

Too similar. I would say what about [name_m]Harry[/name_m]? Has the same vibes as [name_m]Charlie[/name_m].

I wouldn’t do it. I’ve known sibs with rhyming names who find it very annoying :person_shrugging:

[name_f][/name_f]

You could[name_f][/name_f] do [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m] maybe. [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and [name_m]Charleston[/name_m]? He could be called [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] sometimes but it would mean they wouldn’t constantly be [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and [name_m]Charlie[/name_m]?

Personally I think the rhyming is too much and I wouldn’t go ahead with it. I have a friend with boys named Br0dy + C0dy of course this rhyme is more obvious but honestly she receives constant feedback about and she finds it frustrating. I think you’d have similar feedback. I immediately thought [name_m]Chester[/name_m] or [name_m]Callum[/name_m] could be good alternatives.

It’s a little rhymey imo [name_f][/name_f]- that being said I do love [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] and think it would be an adorable middle name!

Yes, [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] are too similar

[name_m]Way[/name_m] too similar for me. [name_f][/name_f] I think the rhyming is a deal breaker. [name_f][/name_f] I bet you can find another name you will love just as much.

Different cultures are known for having siblings with very similar names. The traditional way to name siblings in Korea is to give them a common “first” syllable and a unique “second” syllable. The first syllable is often the same regardless of gender. For example (M) Hyon Gi, (M) Hyon Gu and (F) Hyon Soo, a set of korean siblings i know. And they often go by both names. Now, what is very unusual is that Hyon Soo’s oldest became (F) Hyon Ji, which is very unusual for that name to follow generations. Ironically, i also know a set of Korean siblings (F) Ga Hae and (F) Soo Hae. Different first syllable, same second syllable.

[name_f][/name_f]

Leaving the korean naming traditions, lets go to African American naming traditions. I know an afro-asian family with 5 kids, all their names start with [name_m]Aj[/name_m] and it goes from there. Ajedai, Ajidesh, Ajabari, [name_f]Ajada[/name_f] etc. I knew a single mom whos kids had near identical names but one ended on the feminine and the other on the masculine. I dont remember their names and it was nothing like the example, but imagine [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_m]Michael[/name_m] and [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and [name_f]Samuella[/name_f] etc.

[name_f][/name_f]

So… i dont think [name_f]Marley[/name_f] and [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] are ridiculous or too similar sounding. But do keep in mind, all parents tend to go down the list of kid names when calling for a kid. [name_f]My[/name_f] parents often shouted the first 2 letters of each child in birth order until they got to the name they were trying to call. So you’ll so a lot of “Ma-Charlie!”

[name_f][/name_f]

I want to throw this out. [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] is a great unisex name. If Marley’s sibling is a girl, her name could also be [name_m]Charlie[/name_m], often short for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] but i like it as a full name on its own for either a girl or boy.
