I could really do with thoughts from those from the UK, especially living in the UK.
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I really love the name [name_m]Rory[/name_m] for our baby girl, but I’m worrying it’s too masculine for the UK, where we live.
Our other children are named [name_m]Joss[/name_m] and [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and I’ve posted about name ideas for this baby before - which were super helpful, but we can’t get the name [name_m]Rory[/name_m] out of our heads.
We love it in combination with [name_f]Fae[/name_f] as a middle name, so it’d be [name_m]Rory[/name_m] [name_f]Fae[/name_f], but then our surname is super masculine (very close to literally the word ‘boys’) and so I’m just having concerns about/for the baby girl in the future.
Really need help and thoughts on whether it’s an acceptable name or if we just need to let the name go - but also that strikes fear into me too because we have zero other names we like!
Thank you so much!!

I’m in the UK (England specifically) and I recently met a little baby girl named [name_m]Ronnie[/name_m], which I loved. I think [name_m]Rory[/name_m] could totally work here and I really like [name_m]Rory[/name_m] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] I do see your concern with the last name, but it would not be a deal-breaker for me. I hope you come to feel settled on [name_m]Rory[/name_m] soon. If not, we’re here to help you explore other options!

Obligatory not UK but I think internationally [name_m]Rory[/name_m] is very unisex. I actually would think of it as a girl’s name first before a boy’s. (I’m in the US.)
That’s interesting! Thank you so much!
Don’t worry about it - [name_m]Rory[/name_m] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] is adorable and wonderfully gender-neutral. Honestly [name_m]Rory[/name_m] is fully feminine to be because I know a young girl (probably about 4 or 5) called [name_m]Rory[/name_m]! She’s sparky and energetic, a lovely association.
I also wanna add that I love your kid’s names!
[name_m]Rory[/name_m] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] is adorable! At first slight, I would assume [name_m]Rory[/name_m] is a boy, but I would not be surprised to meet a girl named [name_m]Rory[/name_m].
You can also consider [name_f]Aura[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] or [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] as a full name for [name_m]Rory[/name_m].
So I do read [name_m]Rory[/name_m] as masculine, I’m in [name_f]England[/name_f] and live in an area with a large Irish/Scottish community so [name_m]Rory[/name_m] is really popular choice for boys. I would always assume [name_m]Rory[/name_m] was a boy. Also personally I strongly prefer [name_m]Rory[/name_m] for boys and would prefer [name_m]Rory[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f].
However despite this assumption I wouldn’t be shocked to come across a female [name_m]Rory[/name_m]. Honestly names are becoming so gender fluid nowadays that it wouldn’t be surprising to come across a female [name_m]Rory[/name_m]. I think [name_m]Rory[/name_m] sounds great with [name_f]Fae[/name_f] very bohemian and fairylike. I also think [name_m]Rory[/name_m] makes a great sister name for J0ss + F3rn. Furthermore just to add just because a name may read initially as masculine or feminine people will adjust to knowing your R0ry is a little girl. I wouldn’t overthink peoples thoughts on your child’s name.

I am [name_f]England[/name_f] and when I saw “Rory” in the title I assumed that you were reffering to a boy. I can only picture it on older males.
Despite this, [name_m]Rory[/name_m] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] is adorable.
This is my impression too, as someone from [name_m]North[/name_m] [name_f]America[/name_f]. I would probably not assume gender one way or the other based off of [name_m]Rory[/name_m] alone.
[name_m]Rory[/name_m] [name_f]Fae[/name_f] is so precious! I absolutely love the combination. It’s both fun and sleek. And I think [name_m]Joss[/name_m], [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_m]Rory[/name_m] make such a great sibset. I definitely vote go for it.
[name_m]Rory[/name_m] for a girl is charming, rugged and fresh. I like it.
Some things I’m considering:
- [name_m]Rory[/name_m] ranks #39 for boys, so I think if people were to make a guess, it would be boy…
- …however, [name_m]Charlie[/name_m] is #14 for a boy (and has ranked higher) and I’ve met a good number of girls called just [name_m]Charlie[/name_m]. I’ve met several girl Rowans, though it ranks higher for boys; same, statistically, with [name_m]Beau[/name_m], Noa/h, [name_m]Blake[/name_m], [name_f]Riley[/name_f], [name_f]Harley[/name_f], [name_f]Taylor[/name_f] so it could work.
- [name_f]Fern[/name_f] is distinctively feminine, so [name_f]Fern[/name_f] and [name_m]Rory[/name_m] would probably be seen as sister and brother…
- … but [name_m]Joss[/name_m] is fairly unisex and doesn’t rank. [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] ‘Joss’ has though, so maybe it’s not such a big deal
- I’ve known plenty of girls with ‘boyish’ nicknames - [name_m]Alex[/name_m], [name_m]Charlie[/name_m], [name_f]Georgie[/name_f], [name_f]Ollie[/name_f], [name_m]Matty[/name_m], [name_f]Billie[/name_f], [name_f]Frankie[/name_f], [name_m]Ronnie[/name_m] etc. With the popularity of [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], I think [name_m]Rory[/name_m] fits in
- You love it and nothing else is clicking, so…
I say [name_m]Rory[/name_m] could work

Thank you so much everyone, I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply!
I hear what all of you are saying, pros and cons.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it helps/doesn’t help, that our [name_m]Joss[/name_m] is a boy? We’ve never had any issues with people thinking he’s a girl, even as a tiny baby - unless people didn’t say but [name_m]Rory[/name_m] does feel less ‘unisex’ to me, but I wonder if it’l become more unisex as she gets older anyway because that’s a general trend I think?
You’ve all made me feel a lot better - I feel like overall it seems like it’s workable. I also think she could be shortened to ‘Ro’ which would sit nicely with the other names, Joss/Fern, being monosyllabic?
Thank you so much again everyone, you’re all so lovely and such constructive comments!
