Name Choices & Usernames

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion on these forums. What I find interesting is that those with the most to me off-putting usernames often give the most questionable advice. If the name you choose for yourself doesn’t strike a chord with me, you’re name lists likely won’t either. I know my own username is meant to be taken ironically but some don’t get the joke which is fine by me. I wonder what other people think usernames and the suggestions and roster of names parallels any significance.

My username is my name… Lol. I don’t know how well that fits in with your theory.

Mine is a video game that I played while I was in the hospital as a child. I also don’t know how that fits in with your theory either.

I honestly don’t pay too much attention to usernames. More often than not, it’s their name or like yours “mom” something.

Btw I do get the joke of your username, but a lot do have mommy in it.

I’m intrigued what you find ‘off-putting’ in a username - I know a lot of people have references to their own names or their children’s names in their username, while others that are pretty random, like calling yourself bananasocks or whatever, are probably used by people who want to disguise their identity a bit more online.

So’s mine…well, a phonetic spelling of a nickname :stuck_out_tongue:

Mine is my childhood nickname, so I also don’t see how that fits into your theory.

Well mine is pretty random. No reference to my life whatsoever, only that it sounds quite positive.

But yes I wonder what kind of usernames you find off putting.

I agree that a lot of the usernames are based on real-life names/nicknames/professions/hobbies/locations; some are just random to protect privacy, some are favorite names. Personally, I signed up on a whim and never even thought I would come back after the first round of questions I posted. I wonder how many others did that same thing and just entered something dumb, and then got hooked. And sometimes trolls come around and pick something offensive on purpose, and proceed to post rude comments, just for their own twisted entertainment.

If you don’t like a user’s advice and you find their username is offensive, then disregard their opinion. Or block them. Go to that user’s profile page and click on, “[name]Add[/name] to Ignore List.” I’ve never used that feature, but I assume it works.

I’m not too sure how I came up with mine. “Ciottolo” means ‘pebble’ in Italian, and I suppose I just liked the sound.

My user name is a reference to a Futurama episode that I’ve used since I was wedding planning years ago. It has absolutely nothing to do with naming.

Mine’s a nickname from when I was in Japan, otherwise nothing to do with my life/naming preferences etc, seems like an odd policy, but I hope it works for you.

Mine’s a username I’ve had for years… Cant remember where it came from or when… o_O

Mine is just the first three letters of my first and last name, and 101 is the number of digs I had in my freshman volleyball season, so it’s kind of lucky.

It’s interesting to hear the explanations of some other usernames!

@dindlee that’s really cute!

Mine is just my name and a couple of numbers. I’m curious what you think of it.

My username is the nn my Fiance has for me <3

I keep coming back to see if OP has posted some examples of the off-putting usernames on here. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a username that I’ve thought twice about to be honest!

The big secret about my username is, well, it’s my name :P. And a band reference for the numbers.

mine is also a nickname that resulted from an inside joke with a friend. definitely not chosen to impress anyone!

most members are not experts, and advice/opinions are subjective. some help some, some help others. it’s all about variety of perspectives, imo.

I love that…DH and is use that as a pet name and von von roo (or however it’s spelled) lol.

I really don’t think you can judge people by a username unless it is downright offensive. Mine is a Dr. Suess play on one of my nicknames (I am [name]Sam[/name] I am)

I’ve been a fan of [name]Linda[/name] and [name]Pam[/name]'s books ever since I got the 1994 edition of Beyond [name]Jennifer[/name] & [name]Jason[/name] and have most, if not all, of their books. Yes, I have both versions of Cool Names and such. [name]Ever[/name] since high school, I found their books useful for writing. Anyway, my name choices have evolved since then and sometimes I don’t agree with even them like on the name [name]Barnaby[/name].

I totally hear you when taking advice on these forums. When it comes to naming, I’d often listen more to parents who’ve actually dubbed their kids those names or even people that deal with children like nurses or teachers. I’m not sure that former teen self would’ve been so happy with names now of [name]Jack[/name], [name]Isabel[/name], [name]Rose[/name], and [name]Henry[/name]. So sometimes I find it interesting too the names sometimes suggested often parallel a username that’s just not my style.

What I find most helpful is when people give me the reasons behind why they make the suggestions that they do. It’s so easy to say something like I prefer [name]Charlotte[/name] over [name]Edna[/name] and dismiss the Jaydens of this world. [name]Just[/name] because a lot of posters say so, it may not work for you personally. I know it’s limiting in this space to discuss how you came to your naming conclusions but the methodology of your style should seem sound.

My username is pretty much what it says…
[name]Vegas[/name]- Though I don’t live in [name]Vegas[/name] and I have never been, it holds a special place in my heart. And not because of the “entertainment”.
Country Girl- I like country music and I wish that I lived in the country. The city is just too noisy and busy…
