Name combinations with consonance and assonance

We’re fans of repeating consonants and vowels, of the way it looks when written and how it rolls off the tongue. Our last name Tagg makes that a little tricky though. We’re considering Carrigan [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for a girl. Any suggestions or feedback?

Hmm… you’re right, it does make it tricky. While Carrigan [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a pretty, well-flowing name, Carrigan Tagg just sounds too repetitive for me… maybe it’s just the G. Would you consider instead something like [name_u]Halle[/name_u] or something which repeats but doesn’t have a G? I personally like the sound of [name_u]Halle[/name_u] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
By the way, congrats on a baby!

I really like Carrigan [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]!

Some other names with repeating letters:
[name_u]Addison[/name_u]
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Brenna[/name_f]
Kerrington
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]
[name_f]Maddie[/name_f] (or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]… derivative of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f])
[name_u]Neely[/name_u] ([name_u]Keely[/name_u])

Thanks! But actually, the letters don’t necessary have to repeat in succession, we just like reusing the same letters throughout the name.

You’re absolutely right re: the phonetic pattern of the name; it becomes extremely pleasing to the ear. You’ll need either a strong T or G sound. Also, with a monosyllabic surname, a three-syllable first is ideal. And you don’t want to repeat entire syllables (i.e. for the T, you don’t want a ta- element identical to the first part of Tagg).

Repeating the T
Felicty Tagg
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Amity[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Charity[/name_f] Tagg (just to knock out the virtues)

[name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] Tagg

T&G both

[name_f]Gratia[/name_f] (prn [name_u]GRAY[/name_u]-sha, meaning ‘grace, thankfulness’)
[name_f]Georgette[/name_f] (will blend with Tagg a bit)
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f]
[name_f]Galatea[/name_f]
[name_u]Teagan[/name_u] (way too similar; [name_u]Teagan[/name_u] Tagg sounds like a children’s book character)
[name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] (no assonance with the -th, visual only)
[name_f]Grete[/name_f] / [name_f]Greta[/name_f]
… and of course, [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]

[name_f]Agatha[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] Tagg

Thanks, guys! I really love [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] and [name_f]Gratia[/name_f], might make a good combination.

You might also have luck, just aurally, using the related phonemes. /g/ and /k/ are related (voiced v unvoiced) and /t/ and /d/ (unvoiced v voiced).

You can see how something like [name_f]Katarina[/name_f] Tagg has more assonance than a completely unrelated sound, like R (i.e. [name_f]Renata[/name_f] Tagg). [name_m]Even[/name_m] though K and G are not the same sound, they are both in the same small family of consonants (velar) that they can produce the same effect. This is why Carrigan sounds so good-- you get a double helping, even though the hard C isn’t one of the visually repeated elements.

I.e. [name_f]Katja[/name_f] Tagg, [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] Tagg

There’s also the soft Gs, like [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Gisele[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and so on.

[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] Carrigan Tagg
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_u]Regan[/name_u] Tagg
[name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Gardenia[/name_f] [name_f]Regina[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Megan[/name_f] [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Gardenia[/name_f] [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] Tagg
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] Tagg

I really like the suggestion of [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

This is really interesting, thanks for the reply! I might consider [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u], the /d/ and /k/ do seem to complement the /t/ and /g/ sounds.
