We’re fans of repeating consonants and vowels, of the way it looks when written and how it rolls off the tongue. Our last name Tagg makes that a little tricky though. We’re considering Carrigan [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for a girl. Any suggestions or feedback?
Hmm… you’re right, it does make it tricky. While Carrigan [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a pretty, well-flowing name, Carrigan Tagg just sounds too repetitive for me… maybe it’s just the G. Would you consider instead something like [name_u]Halle[/name_u] or something which repeats but doesn’t have a G? I personally like the sound of [name_u]Halle[/name_u] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
By the way, congrats on a baby!

Thanks! But actually, the letters don’t necessary have to repeat in succession, we just like reusing the same letters throughout the name.
You’re absolutely right re: the phonetic pattern of the name; it becomes extremely pleasing to the ear. You’ll need either a strong T or G sound. Also, with a monosyllabic surname, a three-syllable first is ideal. And you don’t want to repeat entire syllables (i.e. for the T, you don’t want a ta- element identical to the first part of Tagg).

You might also have luck, just aurally, using the related phonemes. /g/ and /k/ are related (voiced v unvoiced) and /t/ and /d/ (unvoiced v voiced).
You can see how something like [name_f]Katarina[/name_f] Tagg has more assonance than a completely unrelated sound, like R (i.e. [name_f]Renata[/name_f] Tagg). [name_m]Even[/name_m] though K and G are not the same sound, they are both in the same small family of consonants (velar) that they can produce the same effect. This is why Carrigan sounds so good-- you get a double helping, even though the hard C isn’t one of the visually repeated elements.
I.e. [name_f]Katja[/name_f] Tagg, [name_f]Kirsten[/name_f] Tagg
There’s also the soft Gs, like [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Gisele[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and so on.

This is really interesting, thanks for the reply! I might consider [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u], the /d/ and /k/ do seem to complement the /t/ and /g/ sounds.
